By building on mature internal combustion engine (ICE) hardware combined with dedicated hydrogen (H2) technology, the H2-ICE has excellent potential to accelerate CO2 reduction. H2-ICE concepts can therefore contribute to realizing the climate targets in an acceptable timeframe. In the landscape of H2-ICE combustion concepts, High Pressure Direct Injection (HPDI™) is an attractive option considering its high thermal efficiency, wide load range and its applicability to on-road as well as off-road heavy-duty equipment. Still, H2-HPDI is characterized by diffusion combustion, giving rise to significant NOx emissions. In this paper, the potential of H2-HPDI toward compliance with future emissions legislation is explored on a 1.8L single-cylinder research engine. With tests on multiple load-speed points, Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) was shown to be an effective measure for reducing engine-out NOx, although at the cost of a few efficiency points.
In the effort to achieve the goal of a climate-neutral transportation system, the use of hydrogen and other synthetic fuels plays a key role. As Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) become more widespread, e-fuels could be used to defossilize the hard-to-electrify transportation sectors and to store energy produced from renewable and non-continuous energy sources. Among e-fuels, hydrogen and ammonia are attractive because they are carbon-neutral and their oxidation does not lead to any CO2 emissions. Furthermore, hydrogen/ammonia blends overcome the issues that arise as each of the two fuels is used separately. As a matter of fact, hydrogen/ammonia mixtures can be liquified at a lower pressure than hydrogen and are more reactive than ammonia. In the automotive sector, the use of hydrogen and ammonia or their blends requires a characterization of such mixtures under engine-like conditions, that is, at high pressures and temperatures.
The issue of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the transportation sector is widely acknowledged. Recent years have witnessed a push towards the electrification of cars, with many considering it the optimal solution to address this problem. However, the substantial battery packs utilized in electric vehicles contribute to a considerable embedded ecological footprint. Research has highlighted that, depending on the vehicle's size, tens or even hundreds of thousands of kilometers are required to offset this environmental burden. Human-powered vehicles (HPVs), thanks to their smaller size, are inherently much cleaner means of transportation, yet their limited speed impedes widespread adoption for mid-range and long-range trips, favoring cars, especially in rural areas. This paper addresses the challenge of HPV speed, limited by their low input power and non-optimal distribution of the resistive forces.
The descent phase of GAGANYAAN (Indian Manned Space Mission) culminates with a crew module impacting at a predetermined site in Indian waters. During water impact, huge amount of loads are experienced by the astronauts. This demands an impact attenuation system which can attenuate the impact loads and reduce the acceleration experienced by astronauts to safe levels. Current state of the art impact attenuation systems use honeycomb core, which is passive, expendable, can only be used once (at touchdown impact) during the entire mission and does not account off-nominal impact loads. Active and reusable attenuation systems for crew module is still an unexplored territory. Three configurations of impact attenuators were selected for this study for the current GAGANYAAN crew module configuration, namely, hydraulic damper, hydro-pneumatic damper and airbag systems.
The study of aerodynamic forces in hypersonic environments is important to ensure the safety and proper functioning of aerospace vehicles. These forces vary with the angle of attack (AOA) and there exists an optimum angle of attack where the ratio of the lift to drag force is maximum. In this paper, computational analysis has been performed on a blunt cone model to study the aerodynamic characteristics when hypersonic flow is allowed to pass through the model. The flow has a Mach number of 8.44 and the angle of attack is varied from 0º to 20º. The commercial CFD solver ANSYS FLUENT is used for the computational analysis and the mesh is generated using the ICEM CFD module of ANSYS. Air is selected as the working fluid. The simulation is carried out for a time duration of 1.2 ms where it reaches a steady state and the lift and drag forces and coefficients are estimated. The pressure, temperature, and velocity contours at different angles of attack are also observed.
Dimensional optimization has always been a time consuming process, especially for aerodynamic bodies, requiring much tuning of dimensions and testing for each sample. Aerodynamic auxiliaries, especially wings, are design dependent on the primary model attached, as they influence the amount of lift or reduction in drag which is beneficial to the model. In this study CFD analysis is performed to obtain pressure counter of wings. For a wing, the angle of attack is essential in creating proper splits to incoming winds, even under high velocities with larger distances from the separation point. In the case of a group of wings, each wing is then mentioned as a wing element, and each wing is strategically positioned behind the previous wing in terms of its vertical height and its self-angle of attack to create maximum lift. At the same time, its drag remains variable to its shape ultimately maximizing the C L /C D ratio.
To ensure adequate visibility without creating excessive glare, vehicle headlights are designed to use a specific source of illumination. The optical designs of headlights gather the luminous flux produced by the light source to produce a useful beam pattern that meets the relevant requirements and standards for vehicle forward lighting. With the advent of solid state, light emitting diode sources for general illumination, an increasing number of LED replacement headlight bulb products has emerged over the past decade. In most cases, these LED replacement bulbs are not permitted for legal use on public roadways, but some countries have begun to permit specific LED replacement bulbs to be used legally on the road for specific makes, models and production years of certain vehicles. If they can be demonstrated to produce a beam pattern that meets the photometric requirements for a legal headlight, they are permitted to be used legally for on-road use.
Recently, with the advancement of autonomous driving technology, the function of external lamps has been changed. Previously, the focus was on the visibility of drivers, but with the advancement of autonomous driving technology, the concept of autonomous driving systems has been developed. Accordingly, the trend of automotive lamp lighting systems has been developed in terms of design, e-HMI (exterior-human machine interface), It is developing in accordance with three major fields such as sensor connection. Therefore, this paper will cover the prior development of road content projection headlamps that enable e-HMI implementation to reflect these new trends. Since the technology is mass-produced and sold by several manufacturers, our company also needs to quickly develop and apply the technology in advance. Only four types of symbols are allowed in European law.
Simulators are essential part of the development process of vehicles and their advanced functionalities. The combination of virtual simulator and Hardware-in-the-loop technology accelerates the integration and functional validation of ECUs and mechanical components. In this study, a real-time capable tire model has been developed and coupled with an innovative simulation apparatus. On-track tests were executed to collect data necessary for tire modelling using an experimental vehicle equipped with wheel force transducer, to measure force and moments acting on tire contact patch. The steering wheel was instrumented with a torque sensor, while tie-rod axial forces were quantified using loadcells. The simulation apparatus is composed of a static and a dynamic simulator. The static simulator integrates the entire steering system from the steering column up to tie rods. Tie-rods dynamic forces are applied by two torque motors.
Tire forces and moments play an important role in vehicle dynamics and safety. X-by-wire chassis components including active suspension, electronic powered steering, by-wire braking, etc can take the tire forces as inputs to improve vehicle’s dynamic performance. In order to measure the accurate dynamic wheel load, most of the researches focused on the kinematic parameters such as body longitudinal and lateral acceleration, load transfer and etc. In this paper, the authors focus on the suspension system, avoiding the dependence on accurate mass and aerodynamics model of the whole vehicle. The geometry of the suspension is equated by the spatial parallel mechanism model (RSSR model), which improves the calculation speed while ensuring the accuracy. A suspension force observer is created, which contains parameters including spring damper compression length, push rod force, knuckle accelerations, etc., combing the kinematic and dynamic characteristic of the vehicle.
A time domain analysis method of ride comfort and energy dissipation characteristics is proposed for automotive vibration PID control. A two degree of freedom single wheel model for automotive vibration control is established, and the conventional vibration response variables for ride comfort evaluation and the energy consumption vibration response variables for energy dissipation characteristics evaluation are determined. The PID control parameters were tuned using the differential evolution algorithm, and to improve the algorithm's adaptive ability, an adaptive operator was introduced in this article, so that the mutation factor of the differential evolution algorithm can change with the number of iterations. Based on PID control and its parameter tuning, a time-domain solution method for two types of vibration response varaibles, their root mean square values and the average power of energy consumption vibration of automotive vibration PID control is proposed.
The global energy crisis and drastic climate change are continuously promoting the implementation of sustainable energy sources. To meet the emission standards and carbon-neutrality targets in vehicle industry, ammonia is considered to be one of the promising carbon-neutral fuels. However, running the engines on high amounts of ammonia may lead to significantly high ammonia slip. This originates huge safety concerns. Therefore, hydrogen is added in certain ratio with ammonia to promote combustion and reduce ammonia slip. Furthermore, adding diesel as a pilot fuel further facilitates the combustion reactions. This experimental study investigated the effect of different ammonia-hydrogen blend ratios on in-cylinder pressure, heat release rate, combustion efficiency, and CA50. This effect of blend ratios was tested for varied diesel pilot amounts and timings.
The gasoline particulate filter (GPF) represents a practical solution for particulate emissions control in light-duty gasoline-fueled vehicles. It is also seen as an essential technology in North America to meet the upcoming US EPA tailpipe emission regulation, as proposed in the “Multi-pollutant Rule for Model Year 2027”. The goal of this study was to introduce advanced, uncoated GPF products and measure their particulate mass (PM) reduction performance within the existing US EPA FTP vehicle testing procedures, as detailed in Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) part 1066. Various state-of-the-art GPF products were characterized for their microstructure properties and lab-bench performance for pressure drop and filtration efficiency, were then subjected to an EPA-recommended 2000mile on-road break-in, and finally were tested on an AWD vehicle chassis-dyno emissions test cell at both 25C and -7C ambient conditions.
