Vehicle Crash Reconstruction Principles and Technology

Crash reconstruction is a scientific process that utilizes principles of physics and empirical data to analyze the physical, electronic, video, audio, and testimonial evidence from a crash to determine how and why the crash occurred. This course will introduce this reconstruction process as it gets applied to various crash types - in-line and intersection collisions, pedestrian collisions, motorcycle crashes, rollover crashes, and heavy truck crashes. Methods of evidence documentation will be covered. Analysis methods will also be presented for electronic data from event data recorders and for video.

A Statistical Method to Substructure Crash Simulation Model

This work presents a statistical method to use a portion of a full finite element vehicle model on a crash analysis event. The substructure model is linked to the full model by recording the interface boundary history. The lateral moving deformable barrier (MDB) test by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is used to demonstrate this substructure method: Substructure portion is identified by energy absorption distribution, and noise elements are filtered out by density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN), a nonsupervised machine learning method. Crashworthiness simulation is performed in LS-DYNA software, and results between substructure vehicle model, full vehicle model, and physical vehicle test results are compared. It shows the result from the substructure model is more effective without accuracy compromise.

This specification establishes the requirements for the following types of self-locking nuts:

a. Wrenching nuts: that is, hex, double hex, spline drive

b. Anchor nuts: that is, plate nuts, gang channel nuts, shank nuts

The wrenching nuts and shank nuts are made of low alloy steels, and the nut elements of plate and gang channel nuts are made of carbon steels or low alloy steels and having MJ threads to ISO 5855/2. Nuts have 1100 MPa tensile strength class at room temperature. Maximum test temperature of parts at 235 °C.
