Investigation of Spray Evaporation and Numerical Model Applied for Fuel-injection Small Engines

The purpose of this research is to develop a prediction technique that can be used in the development of port fuel-injection (hereinafter called PFI) gasoline engines, especially for general purpose small utility engines. Utility engines have two contradictory desirable aspects: compactness and high-power at wide open throttle. Therefore, applying the port fuel injector to utility engines presents a unique intractableness that is different from application to automobiles or motorcycles. At the condition of wide open throttle, a large amount of fuel is required to output high power, and injected fuel is deposited as a wall film on the intake port wall. Despite the fuel rich condition, emissions are required to be kept under a certain level. Thus, it is significant to understand the wall film phenomenon and control film thickness in the intake ports.

Direct Calibration of LIF Measurements of the Oil Film Thickness Using the Capacitance Technique

A direct calibration has been performed on laser-induced fluorescence measurements of the oil film in a single cylinder air-cooled research engine by simultaneously measuring the minimum oil film thickness by the capacitance technique. At the minimum oil film thickness the capacitance technique provides an accurate measure of the ring-wall distance, and this value is used as a reference for the photomultiplier voltage, giving a calibration coefficient. This calibration coefficient directly accounts for the effect of temperature on the fluorescent properties of the constituents of the oil which are photoactive. The inability to accurately know the temperature of the oil has limited the utility of off-engine calibration techniques. Data are presented for the engine under motoring conditions at speeds from 800 - 2400 rpm and under varying throttle positions.

Reverse Engineering of Geometrically Complex Automotive Structures Using X-Ray Computed Tomography and Digital Image Based Finite Element Methods

Stress analyses of complex automotive components can be nearly impossible to achieve due to extreme difficulties in generating a realistic finite element model. A digital image based finite element approach was used to generate a 3-D finite element model from computed tomography (CT) scans of two automotive transmission cases. For the first case, original CT slices of 1024x1024x208 provided by ARACOR Inc. (Sunnyvale, CA) were used to generate a 3-D finite element model containing nearly 400,000 8-node brick elements. For the second case, 770x870x759 CT slices were used to generate a 3-D finite element model containing approximately 650,000 3-D elements. The mesh data generation from CT data for both cases took 6 minutes each on an engineering workstation. The resulting finite element meshes were analyzed using a specially designed finite element equation solver.

Development of a New Light Stratified-Charge DISI Combustion System for a Family of Engines With Upfront CFD Coupling With Thermal and Optical Engine Experiments

A new Light Stratified-Charge Direct Injection (LSC DI) spark ignition combustion system concept was developed at Ford. One of the new features of the LSC DI concept is to use a ‘light’ stratified-charge operation window ranging from the idle operation to low speed and low load. A dual independent variable cam timing (DiVCT) mechanism is used to increase the internal dilution for emissions control and to improve engine thermal efficiency. The LSC DI concept allows a large relaxation in the requirement for the lean after-treatment system, but still enables significant fuel economy gains over the PFI base design, delivering high technology value to the customer. In addition, the reduced stratified-charge window permits a simple, shallow piston bowl design that not only benefits engine wide-open throttle performance, but also reduces design compromises due to compression ratio, DiVCT range and piston bowl shape constraints.

Eliminating Maps from Engine Fueling Control Algorithms

Presented in this paper is an adaptive steady state fueling control system for spark ignition-internal combustion engines. Since the fueling control system is model based, the engine maps currently used in engine fueling control are eliminated. This proposed fueling control system is modular and can therefore accommodate changes in the engine sensor set such as replacing the mass-air flow sensor with a manifold air pressure sensor. The fueling algorithm can operate with either a switching type O2 sensor or a linear O2 sensor. The steady state fueling compensation utilizes a feedforward controller which determines the necessary fuel pulsewidth after a throttle transient to achieve stoichiometry. This feedforward controller is comprised of two nonlinear models capturing the steady state characteristics of the fueling process. These models are identified from an input-output testing procedure where the inputs are fuel pulsewidth and mass-air flow signal and the output is a lambda signal.

Robust Methodology for Fast Crank Angle Based Temperature Measurement

The paper presents a measurement methodology which combines a fine-wire thermocouple with input reconstruction in order to measure crank angle resolved temperature in an engine air-intake system. Thermocouples that are of practical use in engine experiments tend to have a large time constant which affects measurement accuracy during rapid temperature transients. Input reconstruction methods have previously been applied to thermocouples but have not been specifically used in combination with an ultra-thin uninsulated wire thermocouple to investigate cyclic intake temperature behavior. Accurate measurement results are of interest to improve the validity of many crank-angle resolved engine models. An unshielded thermocouple sensor has been developed which is rigid enough to withstand the aerodynamic forces of the intake air.

A Comparison of Four Methods for Determining the Octane Index and K on a Modern Engine with Upstream, Port or Direct Injection

Combustion in modern spark-ignition (SI) engines is increasingly knock-limited with the wide adoption of downsizing and turbocharging technologies. Fuel autoignition conditions are different in these engines compared to the standard Research Octane Number (RON) and Motor Octane Numbers (MON) tests. The Octane Index, OI = RON - K(RON-MON), has been proposed as a means to characterize the actual fuel anti-knock performance in modern engines. The K-factor, by definition equal to 0 and 1 for the RON and MON tests respectively, is intended to characterize the deviation of modern engine operation from these standard octane tests. Accurate knowledge of K is of central importance to the OI model; however, a single method for determining K has not been well accepted in the literature.

CAE Simulation and Experimental Testing of a CVT Vehicle Shuffle

A low-frequency vehicle shuffle can be excited when a reversal of torque occurs in a vehicle's drivetrain. It usually occurs during a throttle tip-in or tip-out event, or a static engagement shift event. This drivetrain shuffle vibration can introduce a vehicle fore-aft vibration that may affect the customer satisfaction of ride comfort and/or powertrain performance. Vehicle test data of the seat track acceleration from a 30 MPH wide-open-throttle tip-out event suggested a strong coupling between the CVT drivetrain shuffle and vehicle fore-aft vibration. An ADAMS based CVT model was developed and integrated into a full vehicle model for dynamic simulation of this vehicle shuffle issue. CAE DOE studies were performed to identify key vehicle and powertrain design parameters that could directly impact the vehicle shuffle vibration. Experimental tests were performed to verify the CAE design improvements of the CVT vehicle shuffle vibration.

Coordinated Control of EGR Valve and Intake Throttle for Better Fuel Economy in Diesel Engines

Modern diesel engines are frequently equipped with an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve and intake throttle (ITH). The intake throttle serves to depress intake manifold pressure, create a greater pressure differential across the EGR valve, and enhance the ability to flow EGR at low speed and load conditions. A conventional approach to controlling the intake throttle is to schedule its desired position as a function of engine speed and load. In this paper we present a coordinated approach to the control of EGR valve and intake throttle.

Effects of Mixture Preparation Characteristics on Four-Stroke Utility Engine Emissions and Performance

A laboratory-based fuel mixture system capable of delivering a range of fuel/air mixtures has been used to observe the effects of differing mixture characteristics on engine combustion through measurement and analysis of incylinder pressure and exhaust emissions. Fuel air mixtures studied can be classified into four different types: 1) Completely homogeneous fuel/air mixtures, where the fuel has been vaporized and mixed with the air prior to entrance into the normal engine induction system, 2) liquid fuel that is atomized and introduced with the air to the normal engine induction system, 3) liquid fuel that is atomized, and partially prevaporized but the air/fuel charge remains stratified up to introduction to the induction system, and 4) the standard fuel metering system. All tests reported here were conducted under wide open throttle conditions. A four-stroke, spark-ignited, single-cylinder, overhead valve-type engine was used for all tests.

Analytical Assessment of Simplified Transient Fuel Tests for Vehicle Transient Fuel Compensation

Good air/fuel ratio (A/F) control is essential to high quality combustion performance, drivability and emissions in internal combustion engine powered vehicles. Cold start and transient fuel wall wetting effects cause significant A/F control challenges in port fuel injected (PFI) engines. Transient fuel compensation (TFC) strategies are used to help control the A/F during cold starts and transient load and RPM conditions for good vehicle performance, but developing optimum TFC strategies and calibrations in a vehicle with many competing effects is very difficult. Thus, simplified transient tests such as fuel or throttle perturbation tests are often used to develop and validate new strategies or calibrations for use in vehicle. This paper will illustrate the use of a validated physical model to analytically assess the value of fuel and throttle perturbation tests for developing a TFC calibration for vehicle use.

Engine Friction Reduction for Improved Fuel Economy

Recent fuel cost increases have changed engine cost/benefit design guidelines and, therefore, renewed interest in engine friction reduction. At a typical part throttle engine operating condition, the mechanical friction (including oil pump & water pump) of a conventional four-cylinder engine consumes approximately 22% of the indicated power. A1 psi (6.9 kPa) MEP reduction in mechanical friction can result in an EPA, M-H fuel economy improvement of l%-2%, depending on the engine/vehicle configuration. This paper reviews various friction measurement methods and presents motoring friction data for several small engines (four and six cylinder). The friction of various components, including the valve train, pistons, rings and rods, seals and engine auxiliaries (alternator, water pump and oil pump) are also shown. Component design modifications for reducing friction are discussed, and projections and measurements of fuel economy gains for improved components are presented.

The Effects of Load Control with Port Throttling at Idle- Measurements and Analyses

An experimental and analytical study was conducted to investigate the effects of load control with port throttling on stability and fuel consumption at idle. With port throttling, the pressure in the intake port increases during the valve-closed period due to flow past the throttle. If the pressure in the port recovers to ambient before the valve overlap period, back flow into the intake system from the cylinder is eliminated. This allows increased valve overlap to be used without increasing the residual mass fraction in the cylinder. Results showed that, with high valve overlap and port throttling, idle stability and fuel consumption can be maintained at values associated with low overlap in a conventionally throttled engine. However, implementation of this concept in production is regarded to require precision-fit and balanced port throttles, an external vacuum pump for vacuum systems support, and revision of the PCV system.

Fast Air-Path Modeling for Stiff Components

Development of propulsion control systems frequently involves large-scale transient simulations, e.g. Monte Carlo simulations or drive-cycle optimizations, which require fast dynamic plant models. Models of the air-path—for internal combustion engines or fuel cells—can exhibit stiff behavior, though, causing slow numerical simulations due to either using an implicit solver or sampling much faster than the bandwidth of interest to maintain stability. This paper proposes a method to reduce air-path model stiffness by adding an impedance in series with potentially stiff components, e.g. throttles, valves, compressors, and turbines, thereby allowing the use of a fast-explicit solver. An impedance, by electrical analogy, is a frequency-dependent resistance to flow, which is shaped to suppress the high-frequency dynamics causing air-path stiffness, while maintaining model accuracy in the bandwidth of interest.

In-Cylinder Mixing Rate Measurements and CFD Analyses

Gas-phase in-cylinder mixing was examined by two different methods. The first method for observing mixing involved planar Mie scattering measurements of the instantaneous number density of silicon oil droplets which were introduced to the in-cylinder flow. The local value of the number density was assumed to be representative of the local gas concentration. Because the objective was to observe the rate in which gas concentration gradients change, to provide gradients in number density, droplets were admitted into the engine through only one of the two intake ports. Air only flowed through the other port. Three different techniques were used in analyzing the droplet images to determine the spatially dependent particle number density. Direct counting, a filtering technique, and autocorrelation were used and compared. Further, numerical experiments were performed with the autocorrelation method to check its effectiveness for determination of particle number density.

Sound Quality Metric for Diesel Engines

Sound data were recorded from a series of trucks that were operated in various powertrain conditions. The acquired sounds from both the steady state engine speed and second gear wide open throttle operation were then presented to a group of subjects as paired comparisons. Correlation between these subjective ratings to the objective measures of the engine sound were then done and a linear relationship developed.

Study of Whistles with a Generic Sidebranch

The coupling of shear layer instabilities with the acoustic resonances at the interface of two ducts, a main duct and a connecting sidebranch, leads to whistle noise. The present study investigates experimentally the mechanism of such pure tone noise. A generic sidebranch adapter is fabricated to allow for: (1) the ability to mount downstream of the throttle body in the induction system of a production engine; (2) the adjustment of sidebranch length; and (3) the changes in the diameter of the branch duct. Experiments are conducted both in a flow facility and an engine dynamometer facility for the same set of flow rates. The correlation of the whistle noise between these two facilities is examined in terms of frequency and the dimensionless numbers, including Strouhal and Mach.

Throttle Flow Characterization

A time-efficient throttle flow data collection method is described. It uses a sonic nozzle flow bench to measure air flow as a function of throttle angle and pressure in a manner analogous to on-engine dynamometer throttle flow characterization. Opening each sonic nozzle combination, then recording throttle downstream pressure and computed nozzle flow allows data to be taken in a fraction of the time normally needed. Throttle flow modeling considerations are then discussed.

The True Definition and Measurement of Oversteer and Understeer

The concept of vehicle understeer and oversteer has been well studied and equations, test methods, and test results have been published for many decades. This concept has a specific definition in the steady-state driving range as opposed to quantification in highly transient limit handling events. There have been specific test procedures developed and employed by automotive engineers for decades on how to quantify understeer. These include the constant radius method, the constant steering wheel angle/variable speed method, the constant speed/ variable radius method, and the constant speed/variable steer method. These methods are very good for calculating the understeer gradient but care must be taken in interpreting the result at the limits of tire traction since lateral tire forces can be reduced on a drive axle when significant throttle is applied.

A Steady State Vehicle Model to Predict Engine and Transmission Performance

A steady state vehicle model is developed that will predict engine and automatic transmission operating conditions based on various vehicle configurations and operating conditions. The model provides a better understanding of the effects, including direction and magnitude, of changes in vehicle configuration and/or operating conditions on powertrain requirements. The model results can then be used as input into powertrain matching decisions. In general, the model will begin by determining vehicle road load requirements (wheel speed and torque) as a function of vehicle speed based on ambient, road, and vehicle inputs. Such road load requirement will then be cascaded into input and output requirements of the rear axle, transmission gearing, torque converter (locked and unlocked), and finally the engine. Wide open throttle engine torque data will also be translated into tractive effort at the wheels and resulting acceleration capability versus the vehicle road load requirements.
