This SAE Aerospace Standard (AS) establishes the requirements for polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) hose assemblies for use in aerospace hydraulic systems at temperatures between -55 °C and 204 °C and at a nominal pressure up to 28,000 kPa (280 bar). The hose assemblies are also suitable for use within the same temperature and pressure limitations in aerospace pneumatic systems where some gaseous diffusion through the wall of the PTFE liner can be tolerated. The use of these hose assemblies in high pressure pneumatic storage systems is not recommended. In addition, installations in which the limits specified herein are exceeded, or in which the application is not covered specifically by this document, for example, oxygen, shall be subject to the approval of the purchaser.

This Metric Aerospace Standard (MA) covers the requirements for polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) hose assemblies for use in aerospace hydraulic, fuel, and lubricating oil systems at temperatures between -55°C and 232°C for Class I assemblies, -55°C and 135°C for Class II assemblies, and at nominal pressures up to 10 500 kPa (105 bar). The hose assemblies are also suitable for use within the same temperature and pressure limitations in aerospace pneumatic systems where some gaseous diffusion through the wall of the PTFE liner can be tolerated. The use of these hose assemblies in pneumatic storage systems is not recommended. In addition, installations in which the limits specified herein are exceeded, or in which the application is not covered specifically by this standard, for example oxygen, shall be subject to the approval of the purchaser.

The scope of this document is limited to the compatibility of typical fluids that may come in contact with PTFE hose assemblies. PTFE hose assemblies may be braided with CRES wire, polyester or para-aramid fibers. Hose assemblies may be equipped with aluminum, CRES, titanium or nickel alloy fittings; and with fire resistant cover materials. All of these constituent materials of PTFE hose assemblies must be compatible with all of the fluids found in any particular application.

This SAE Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) is intended as a guide for choosing a minimum wall thickness of tubing, based only on pressure, for use with welded tube fitting ends that have a “tube wall code” covering a range of tube wall thicknesses. These wall thicknesses are based on burst pressure with an arbitrary additional safety factor. If the weld fitting user has already established the required minimum wall thickness for given performance conditions, this guide does not apply.
