This SAE Standard covers material, dimensional, and performance requirements of steel O-ring face seal fittings for tubing and the O-ring face seal interface and nut portion of hose stem assemblies for nominal tube or hose diameters 6.35 mm (0.250 in) through 38.1 mm (1.500 in). These fittings are intended for general application and hydraulic systems on industrial equipment and commercial products, where elastomeric seals are acceptable to overcome leakage and variations in assembly procedures. These fittings are capable of providing leak-proof full flow connections in hydraulic systems operating from 95 kPa (28 in Hg) vacuum to working pressures shown in Table 1. Since many factors influence the pressure at which a hydraulic system will or will not perform satisfactorily, these values should not be construed as guaranteed minimums.

This SAE Standard covers normalized electric-resistance welded flash-controlled single-wall low-carbon steel pressure tubing intended for use as pressure lines and in other applications requiring tubing of a quality suitable for bending, flaring, beading, and brazing. Material produced to this specification is not intended to be used for single flare applications due to the potential leak path that would be caused by the ID weld bead. This specification also covers SAE J356 Type -A tubing. The mechanical properties and performance requirements of standard SAE J356 and SAE J356 Type-A are the same. Therefore, the designated differences of Type-A tubing are not meant to imply that Type-A tubing is in anyway inferior to standard SAE J356. The Type-A designation is only meant to address the unique manufacturing differences of the small diameter, light wall sizes (typically 15.88 mm OD X 1.24 mm wall and smaller.)

The coupler is designed for use with a mineral based hydraulic fluid. It is used on machines specified in SAE J1116. It does not apply to the mating hydraulic quick action couplings not on the machine. Diagnostic couplings in accordance with SAE J1502 may be used at a working pressure of 42 MPa. The permissible working pressure depends upon the materials, design, working conditions, application, etc. Conformance to the dimensional information in this part of SAE J1502 does not guarantee rated performance. Each manufacturer should perform testing according to the specification contained in this document to ensure that components comply with the performance rating.
