Characterizing the Onset of Manual Transmission Gear Rattle Part I: Experimental Results

The objective of this investigation is to characterize the ability of loose gears to resist rattle in a manual transmission driven by an internal combustion engine. A hemi-anechoic transmission dynamometer test cell with the capability to produce torsional oscillations is utilized to initiate gear rattle in a front wheel drive (FWD) manual transmission, for a matrix of operating loads and selected gear states. A signal processing technique is derived herein to identify onset of gear rattle resulting from a standardized set of measurements. Gear rattle was identified by a distinct change in noise and vibration measures, and correlated to gear oscillations by a computed quantity referred to as percent deviation in normalized gear speed. An angular acceleration rattle threshold is defined based upon loose gear inertia and drag torque. The effects of mean speed, mean and dynamic torque, and gear state on the occurrence of loose gear rattle are reported.

Feasibility Study of a Heavy-duty Tractor - Motorized Semi-trailer Hybrid Electric Combination

The objective of this study was to evaluate the concept of a heavy-duty tractor - motorized semi-trailer hybrid electric combination, which would have electric drive axles on the semi-trailer. The scope of the project included an analysis of the general concept of a power-driven semi-trailer, the positioning of the concept of the heavy-duty tractor - motorized semi-trailer hybrid electric combination in the general context of the technology, and the evaluation of the applicability of the concept for different duty cycles. Several transport activities were analyzed to determine specific duty cycles for heavy-duty vehicles: highway line haul and regional haul, construction haul, and off-highway hauling of raw materials, such as forestry transport with Class 8 and off-highway tractor-trailer combinations.

Performance Characterization of a Triple Input Clutch, Layshaft Automatic Transmission Using Energy Analysis

This paper details the design and operating attributes of a triple input clutch, layshaft automatic transmission (TCT) with a torque converter in a rear wheel drive passenger vehicle. The objectives of the TCT design are to reduce fuel consumption while increasing acceleration performance through the design of the gearing arrangement, shift actuation system and selection of gear ratios and progression. A systematic comparison of an 8-speed TCT design is made against a hypothetical 8-speed planetary automatic transmission (AT) with torque converter using an energy analysis model based upon empirical data and first principles of vehicle-powertrain systems. It was found that the 8-speed TCT design has the potential to provide an approximate 3% reduction in fuel consumption, a 3% decrease in 0-100 kph time and 30% reduction in energy loss relative to a comparable 8-speed planetary AT with an idealized logarithmic ratio progression.

A Novel Hierarchical Global Chassis Control System for Distributed Electric Vehicles

The current global chassis control (GCC) frequently makes use of decoupled control methods which depend on driving condition partition and simple rule-based vertical force distribution, and are insufficient to obtain optimal vehicle dynamics performance. Therefore, a novel hierarchical global chassis control system for a distributed electric vehicle (DEV), which is equipped with four wheel driving/steering and active suspension systems, is developed in this paper. The control system consists of three layers: in the upper layer, the desired forces/moments based on vehicular driving demands are determined; in the middle layer, a coordinated control method of longitudinal/lateral/vertical tire forces are proposed; in the lower layer, the driving/steering/suspension control is conducted to realize each distributed tire force.

General Motors Rear Wheel Drive Eight Speed Automatic Transmission

General Motors shall introduce a new rear wheel drive eight speed automatic transmission, known as the 8L90, in the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette. The rated turbine torque capacity is 1000 Nm. This transmission replaces the venerable 6L80 six speed automatic. The objectives behind creation of this transmission are improved fuel economy, performance, and NVH. Packaging in the existing vehicle architecture and high mileage dependability are the givens. The architecture is required to offer low cost for a rear drive eight speed transmission while meeting the givens and objectives. An eight speed powerflow, invented by General Motors, was selected. This powerflow yields a 7.0 overall ratio spread, enabling improved launch capability because of a deeper first gear ratio and better fuel economy due to lower top gear N/V capability, relative to the 6L80. The eight speed ratios are generated using four simple planetary gearsets, two brake clutches, and three rotating clutches.

Development of Third-Generation Electronically Controlled AWD Coupling with New High-Performance Electromagnetic Clutch

This paper describes the development of the new third-generation electronically controlled all-wheel drive (AWD) coupling that achieves drastically improved drag torque performance and torque accuracy at low temperatures, and contributes to higher fuel efficiency through weight reduction in the driveline. One issue for electronically controlled AWD couplings is an increase in torque due to higher lubricant viscosity at low temperatures, especially below 0°C, because of clutch slide with the lubricant sealed inside the couplings. The developed third-generation electronically controlled AWD coupling addresses this issue by focusing on the surface texture of the electromagnetic clutch. The third-generation coupling also restricts the torque increase by actively utilizing the dynamic pressure between the clutch plates and increasing the clearance of the clutch plates at low temperatures where viscosity increases. This enables further weight reduction in the driveline.

Safe and Eco Friendly Train Traction System with No Rails

In this research paper, a novel train traction system is described. In this system, the vehicle is lifted like a hovercraft by air cushion and the traction is achieved by using horizontally mounted all-wheel drive. Chance of derailment is completely eliminated and wherein even in the event of failure of few traction wheel stations during run, the train remains mobile with absolute safety even at high speeds. All-wheel drive traction is powered by overhead electrification to maintain high power to weight ratio and faster acceleration. In the present invention, no rail is used. This eliminates the enormous cost of laying the complex and expensive railway tracks. Other advantages include the lack of exhaust fumes and carbon emissions at point of use especially in countries where electricity comes primarily from non-fossil sources, less noise, lower maintenance requirements of the traction units.

Impact of Electric Drive Vehicle Technologies on Fuel Efficiency to Support 2017-2025 CAFE Regulations

Manufacturers have been considering various technology options to improve vehicle fuel economy. Some of the most promising technologies are related to vehicle electrification. To evaluate the benefits of vehicle electrification to support the 2017-2025 CAFE regulations, a study was conducted to simulate many of the most common electric drive powertrains currently available on the market: 12V Micro Hybrid Vehicle (start/stop systems), Belt-integrated starter generator (BISG), Crank-integrated starter generator (CISG), Full Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV), PHEV with 20-mile all-electric range (AER) (PHEV20), PHEV with 40-mile AER (PHEV40), Fuel-cell HEV and Battery Electric vehicle with 100-mile AER (EV100). Different vehicle classes were also analyzed in the study process: Compact, Midsize, Small SUV, Midsize SUV and Pickup. This paper will show the fuel displacement benefit of each powertrain across vehicle classes.

Direct Fuel Injector Power Drive System Optimization

The objective of this study is to optimize the injector power drive system for improved fuel injection quantity and timing control. The power drive system was optimized for improved injection repeatability under different operating conditions such as fuel supply pressures. A coupled simulation of injector electromagnetic, pintle (needle) rigid body motion and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was employed to generate the optimal values of the 1st stage current, the 1st stage on-time and the 2nd stage current. The simulation results were validated against the experimental data measured with a photo detector measurement system.

Effect of Terrain Roughness on the Roll and Yaw Directional Stability of an Articulated Frame Steer Vehicle

Compared to the vehicles with conventional steering, the articulated frame steer vehicles (ASV) are known to exhibit lower directional and roll stability limits. Furthermore, the tire interactions with relatively rough terrains could adversely affect the directional and roll stability limits of an ASV due to terrain-induced variations in the vertical and lateral tire forces. It may thus be desirable to assess the dynamic safety of ASVs in terms of their directional control and stability limits while operating on different terrains. The effects of terrain roughness on the directional stability limits of an ASV are investigated through simulations of a comprehensive three-dimensional model of the vehicle with and without a rear axle suspension. The model incorporates a torsio-elastic rear axle suspension, a kineto-dynamic model of the frame steering struts and equivalent random profiles of different undeformable terrains together with coherence between the two tracks profiles.

Combined Longitudinal and Lateral Control for Automated Lane Guidance of Full Drive-by-Wire Vehicles

This paper presents a simultaneous longitudinal and lateral motion control strategy for a full drive-by-wire autonomous vehicle. A nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) problem is formulated in which the nonlinear prediction model utilizes a spatial transformation to derive the dynamics of the vehicle about the reference trajectory, which facilitates the acquisition of the tracking errors at varying speeds. A reference speed profile generator is adopted by taking account of the road geometry information, such that the lateral stability is guaranteed and the lane guidance performance is improved. Finally, the nonlinear multi-variable optimization problem is simplified by considering only three motion control efforts, which are strictly confined within a convex set and are readily distributed to the four tires of a full drive-by-wire vehicle.

Real-Time Powertrain Models of Hybrid Electric Vehicles

Hybrid electric powertrains are developed for reducing the fuel consumption and consequently the emission of carbon dioxide. The fuel consumption of those systems depends significantly on the topology of the powertrain and the applied control strategy. For testing and improving the control strategy in terms of the overall system efficiency, Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) simulation can be applied. In order to operate the corresponding electronic control units in a virtual environment, it emulates the behavior of the actuator and sensor signals by a real-time simulation of the powertrain. Developing those powertrain models is a time-consuming task, due to high dynamics and high switching frequencies of the electrical subsystem and due to the large diversity of powertrain configurations.

Agriculture Tractors are widely used as prime mover either to pull or drive the “Implements” in the farms, apart from custom made equipments like Transplanter, Manure Spreader, Combine Harvester, Cotton Picker, mobile irrigation etc. which are used for particular operations in large production capacities. For larger landholdings, timely completion of the operation within the window period is the major decisive factor that drives agriculture tractor design. For small farms like in India, the productivity requirement was offset by the versatility of the equipment. Also, the farming practice varies in India due to geographical conditions such as soil types and demographic conditions such as crops types. Hence, the mechanisation level of matured market was not yet achieved in India, though the technologies are available for implementation.

Vibrations and Torque Losses of Synchronizers in Transmissions

Synchronizers are shifting elements in transmissions with power interruption, such as manual transmissions (MT) and automated manual transmissions (AMT). Synchronizers are also used in dual clutch transmissions (DCT) for shifting the preselected idler gear in the load-free branch of the transmission. Electric drive units (EDU) mainly consist of a two-stage transmission combined with a high-speed electric motor. Synchronizers realize the power flow from an idler gear to a gear shaft of the transmission. Automotive transmissions are usually operated with lubricating oils in order to minimize friction and wear of the mechanical components. Lubricating oil has a major influence on torque losses and on vibration behavior of transmission components. Torsional vibrations of mechanical components in transmissions lead to natural vibrations with high impact forces and thus to high radiated airborne sound levels.

Compared with traditional internal combustion engine vehicles, the biggest difference between electric vehicles (EV) is their electric drive system. High-frequency noise is generated when the electric motor is used as a power device. When there is no engine noise, the problem of electric drive noise is more obvious. Generally, an sound package is used to block the transmission path of noise. Therefore, an sound package is selected to cover the electric motor to reduce the impact of noise on the interior of the vehicle.

Pass by Noise Analysis Method Extended for Mitigation Solution Development on Earth Moving Machinery

Pass-by/exterior noise of earth moving machines (EMM) and forestry machines is becoming a focus at early product development stages. ISO 6395 (2) or EC/2000/14 (1) standards defines exterior noise test procedure for EMM. However, these standards do not provide insights for diagnosing any noise issues which may arise. The analysis challenges are posed by the moving machine and acoustic sources with respect to the stationary hemisphere target microphone on the ground and changing operating condition of sources as function of time. There is need to develop a seamless methodology to identify acoustic sources, quantify respective source strengths and rank partial contributions from each source to the total target microphone response in order to overcome the aforementioned challenges.

Prediction and Validation of Cab Noise in Agricultural Equipment

To improve overall customer experience, it is imperative to minimize the noise levels inside agricultural equipment cab. Up-front prediction of acoustic performance in product development is critical to implement the noise control strategies optimally. This paper discusses the methodology used for virtual modeling of a cab on agricultural equipment for prediction of interior noise. The Statistical Energy Analysis (SEA) approach is suitable to predict high frequency interior noise and sound quality parameters such as articulation index and loudness. The cab SEA model is developed using a commercial software. The structural and acoustic excitations are measured through physical testing in various operating conditions. The interior noise levels predicted by the virtual model are compared with the operator ear noise levels measured in the test unit. The resultant SPL spectrum from SEA correlates well with the test.

NVH Methodologies for Electrified Drive Unit Development

The automotive industry continues to develop new powertrain and vehicle technologies aimed at reducing overall vehicle-level fuel consumption. Specifically, the use of electrified propulsion systems, including electrified and electric drive units (EDU), is expected to play a significant role in helping OEMs meet fleet CO2 reduction targets for 2025 and beyond. The change to vehicles propelled by electrified powertrains leads to a reduction in vehicle noise levels. Despite the overall noise levels being low, the NVH behavior of such vehicles can be objectionable due to the presence of tonal noise coming from electric machines and geartrain components. In order to ensure customer acceptance of electrically propelled vehicles, it is imperative that these NVH challenges are understood and solved. Specifically, this paper discusses the EDU NVH development process. This includes considerations for CAE/test-based development and validation processes to ensure optimal NVH development.
