From engine and transmission systems, to virtually all chassis subsystems (brakes, suspensions, and steering), some level of computer control is present. This introduction to radar focuses on understanding how radars work and the trade offs that must be made to achieve its specified performance, focusing on applications to automotive safety and autonomy. The class includes demonstrations of radar signal outputs and describes the chain of hardware and software processing found in most radar systems. Participants will be exposed to all aspects of radar design at a level detailed enough to understand system engineering estimates for the major functions by examining the basic functions of radars, from the waveform generation in the transmitter, all the way to target detection in the receiver.

Photography for Accident Reconstruction, Product Liability, and Testing

Many technical projects, most vehicle and component testing, and all accident reconstructions, product failure analyses, and other forensic investigations, require photographic documentation. Roadway evidence disappears, tested or wrecked vehicles are repaired, disassembled, or scrapped, and components can be tested to failure. Photographs are frequently the only evidence that remains of a wreck, or the only records of subjects before or during tests. Making consistently good images during any inspection is a critical part of the evaluation process.

Security continues to be an ever-growing concern in more and more design spaces. There are daily articles about security breaches and there is a need for much higher security through the entire system stack. Thorough testing of systems can lead to stronger security in systems, but testing can only expose so many vulnerabilities. Formal methods is another solution that ensures specific behaviors will not occur. seL4 is the first formally proven microkernel and it is open-source. This makes it a great solution for systems that need strong security.

Validating Requirements and Improving Specifications with Telematics Data

Field failures cause high warranty expenses, perhaps the highest quality cost. Failures occur when new designs are introduced, existing products are sold in new markets, and product specifications don’t reflect actual product usage. Any mistake in product specifications affects the entire product development process and cascades through the supply chain. New product requirements are developed using prior requirements, rely on customer surveys, use “expert” opinion, or are the result of compromises to meet timing or management direction. The resulting requirements may be excessive or insufficient.

This ½ day technical session is an abbreviated version of the 2 day SAE course on the same topic. The session will begin with a review of Infrared basics - electromagnetic spectrum, spectral irradiance, night vision and eye safety. We will then dive into LIDAR – flash, scanning, wavelengths, lasers, detectors, scanners, range and resolution calculations, optics, thermal design, challenges to automotive qualification and sensor fusion. The second half will cover Infrared camera topics with focus on driver monitoring for interior and machine vision for exterior.

Understanding and Using the SAE J2534-1 API to Access Vehicle Networks

With the increase in vehicle electronics, the need to gather data from the vehicle has never been greater. From vehicle development, through vehicle test to vehicle validation, engineers are required to collect data from the vehicle's network. The SAE J2534-1 API (Recommended Practice for Pass-Thru Vehicle Programming) gives engineers the tool to collect vehicle data from multiple network types including CAN, ISO15765, J1850, ISO9141 and Chrysler SCI, using standard J2534 interface devices. In addition, the aftermarket can access the vehicle's OBDII information from the diagnostic connector.

Photographs and video recordings of vehicle crashes and accident sites are more prevalent than ever, with dash mounted cameras, surveillance footage, and personal cell phones now ubiquitous. The information contained in these pictures and video provide critical information to understanding how crashes occurred, and in analyzing physical evidence. This course teaches the theory and techniques for getting the most out of digital media, including correctly processing raw video and photographs, correcting for lens distortion, and using photogrammetric techniques to convert the information in digital media to usable scaled three-dimensional data.
