This course provides an overview of state-of-the-art intelligent vehicles, presents a systematic framework for intelligent technologies and vehicle-level architecture, and introduces testing methodologies to evaluate individual and integrated intelligent functions. Considering the increasing demand for vehicle intelligence, it is critical to gain an understanding of the growing variety of intelligent vehicle technologies and how they must function together effectively as a system.

Infrared Camera for ADAS and Autonomous Sensing

Advanced Driver Assist System (ADAS) and autonomous vehicle technologies have disrupted the traditional automotive industry with potential to increase safety and optimize the cost of car ownership. Among the challenges are those of sensing the environment in and around the vehicle. Infrared camera sensing is seeing a rapid growth and adoption in the industry. The applications and illumination architecture options continue to evolve. This course will provide the foundation on which to build near infrared camera technologies for automotive applications.

Wireless Power Charging Fundamentals and Challenges

Wireless power transfer (WPT) of plug-in and battery electric vehicles (PEV�s) rely on loosely coupled transformer operating in magnetic resonance to tune out reactive effects. Depending on the degree of coupling, such systems experience a single peak response that trends to bifurcate as the coefficient of coupling increases. This places additional burden on the WPT grid side power controller to not only manage the power transfer process but to manage the transmit coil to receiver coil reactive power in response to vehicle ground clearance and misalignment tolerance. In addition, the WPT rectified output voltage must dynamically match the vehicle on-board regenerative energy storage system (RESS). This paper examines the essentials of WPT operation and challenges facing the commercialization of wireless charging. A Systematic Mapping Study on Security Countermeasures of In-Vehicle Communication Systems

Abstract The innovations of vehicle connectivity have been increasing dramatically to enhance the safety and user experience of driving, while the rising numbers of interfaces to the external world also bring security threats to vehicles. Many security countermeasures have been proposed and discussed to protect the systems and services against attacks. To provide an overview of the current states in this research field, we conducted a systematic mapping study (SMS) on the topic area “security countermeasures of in-vehicle communication systems.” A total of 279 papers are identified based on the defined study identification strategy and criteria. We discussed four research questions (RQs) related to the security countermeasures, validation methods, publication patterns, and research trends and gaps based on the extracted and classified data. Finally, we evaluated the validity threats and the whole mapping process.

Localization and Perception for Control and Decision-Making of a Low-Speed Autonomous Shuttle in a Campus Pilot Deployment

Abstract Future SAE Level 4 and Level 5 autonomous vehicles (AV) will require novel applications of localization, perception, control, and artificial intelligence technology in order to offer innovative and disruptive solutions to current mobility problems. This article concentrates on low-speed autonomous shuttles that are transitioning from being tested in limited traffic, dedicated routes to being deployed as SAE Level 4 automated driving vehicles in urban environments like college campuses and outdoor shopping centers within smart cities. The Ohio State University has designated a small segment in an underserved area of the campus as an initial AV pilot test route for the deployment of low-speed autonomous shuttles. This article presents initial results of ongoing work on developing solutions to the localization and perception challenges of this planned pilot deployment.

The intended application is for commercial vehicles with larger battery packs requiring higher charging rates for moderate dwell time. A simplified analog safety signaling approach is used for connection-detection to guarantee de-energized state for unmated couplers with superimposed high speed data for EVSE-EV charging control and other value added services.

Using IntelliDriveSM Connectivity to Improve Mobility and Environmental Preservation at Signalized Intersections

The recent interest in IntelliDrive(SM) and vehicle connectivity has gone past previous notions of automatic collision notification, internet browsing and off board navigation. Now, in addition to applying the 5.9 GHz ITS band for cooperative collision avoidance, other applications using connectivity between the vehicle and signalized intersections have emerged. Contemporary applications enhancing fuel economy and reducing green house gases (GHG) are the subject of current research and development. Cooperation between vehicle electronics and intelligent traffic management systems could change the landscape for addressing future ECO (economical and ecological) requirements. This manuscript will outline development within one automotive supplier targeted at using connectivity as an enabling technology for sustaining the vision of smart and green transportation systems.

Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) networks within the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) lead to safety and mobility improvements in vehicle road traffic. This paper presents case studies that support the realization of the ITS architecture as an evolutionary process, beginning with driver information systems for enhancing feedback to the users, semi-autonomous control systems for improved vehicle system management, and fully autonomous control for improving vehicle cooperation and management. The paper will also demonstrate how the automotive, telecom, and data and service providers are working together to develop new ITS technologies.

Design Optimization of a Series Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle for Real-World Driving Conditions

This paper proposes a framework to perform design optimization of a series PHEV and investigates the impact of using real-world driving inputs on final design. Real-World driving is characterized from a database of naturalistic driving generated in Field Operational Tests. The procedure utilizes Markov chains to generate synthetic drive cycles representative of real-world driving. Subsequently, PHEV optimization is performed in two steps. First the optimal battery and motor sizes to most efficiently achieve a desired All Electric Range (AER) are determined. A synthetic cycle representative of driving over a given range is used for function evaluations. Then, the optimal engine size is obtained by considering fuel economy in the charge sustaining (CS) mode. The higher power/energy demands of real-world cycles lead to PHEV designs with substantially larger batteries and engines than those developed using repetitions of the federal urban cycle (UDDS).

Design Optimization of Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors for HEV & EV

This paper proposes a new motor design procedure for reducing motor loss in hybrid vehicles (HEV) and electric vehicles (EV). To find an optimum design in a short time, a non-linear magnetic circuit model was developed for interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSM). Speed-torque curves and motor losses were calculated based on this model. Combined with Energy Management Simulation, this model makes it possible to find an optimum motor design with minimum loss.
