Accelerated Test Methods for Ground and Aerospace Vehicle Development

Engineers and managers involved with product development are constantly challenged to reduce time to market, minimize warranty costs, and increase product quality. With less and less time for testing, the need for effective accelerated test procedures has never been greater. This course covers the benefits, limitations, processes, and applications of several proven accelerated test methods including accelerated reliability, step stress, FSLT (Full System Life Test), FMVT® (Failure Mode Verification Testing), HALT (Highly Accelerated Life Testing), and HASS (Highly Accelerated Stress Screening).

Rubber – a loosely cross-linked network of polymer chains that when strained to high levels will forcibly return to at or near it original dimensions. Data Driven Testing for HIL Systems

The amount of software, computation and logic embedded into the vehicle systems is increasing. Testing of complex real time embedded systems using Hardware in Loop (HIL) simulations across different vehicle platforms has been a challenge. Data driven testing enables a qualitative approach to test these complex vehicle systems. It consists of a test framework wherein the test logic and data are independent of the HIL test environment. The data comprises variables used for both input values and output verification values. This data is maintained in a database or in the form of tables. Each row defines an independent test scenario. The entire test data is divided into three categories, High, Medium and Low. This feature gives the advantage of leveraging the same set of test data from Unit Level Testing phases to the Integration Test phase in the V-Cycle of software development. A data driven test approach helps the reuse of tests across vehicle platforms.

Railroads are facing a crisis in operating costs, the urge toward reduction of unnecessary weight has become widespread and the crusade for noise abatement is no longer to be denied, according to the author. The pneumatic-tired railroad-coach not only answers these requirements, he says, but anticipates a demand for a new traveling comfort. The desire to rubberize railroad equipment is old but much fruitless research has resulted from directing it chiefly toward solid-rubber or cushion tires. Road and rail surfaces present entirely different problems so far as the tire is concerned. No uniformity of conditions obtains on highways but rails are even and smooth. A badly aligned joint such as would wreck a metal wheel makes no impression on a pneumatic tire. As simple as the tire problem may seem, its solution represents years of courageous and skillful research on the part of the Michelin company in France.

In this indirect way and in several direct ways the same situation presents problems to truck builders. Variations in state requirements necessitate undue diversity of designs, present difficult engineering problems, discourage enterprise, threaten the American system of production and penalize good engineering and sound manufacture.

Gear Testing Methods For Development of Heavy-Duty Gearing

SEVERAL methods of testing the gears used on heavy-duty transmissions are discussed here. An important feature of these tests, according to the authors, is the degree to which they correlate with actual field experience. In this connection they emphasize that laboratory tests will never completely replace field tests, however, because 100% correlation between the two types of tests can never be achieved. The authors explain that the laboratory tests should, nevertheless, allow new gear designs to be developed that are closer to being right the first time and that require less time to correct any failures that show up in the field.

An Evaluation of Factors Used to Compute TRUCK PERFORMANCE

THE results of a study to determine practical values for the performance factors of trucks are presented here. Relationships for determining rolling resistance, air resistance, grade resistance, chassis frictional resistance, power loss due to altitude, and the mass equivalent constant are given that closely approximate actual performance figures. It is pointed out, however, that there exists considerable controversy in the industry over some of these factors, especially those for air resistance and chassis frictional resistance, indicating that an experimental research program is definitely required to develop sound engineering values for these two resistances.
