A Primer on Regulations and Liability Considerations for HAV’s

Potential regulations surrounding the development, testing and commercial launch of Highly Automated Vehicles and possible liability exposure for the manufacturing and operation of Highly Automated Vehicles are fluid and changing areas, that will continue to evolve over the next several years. The first half of this course reviews where regulations are at the state and federal levels, what actions are currently under consideration, how current regulations will need to change to accommodate HAV’s, and how and when new regulations might be implemented. The second half covers both common law and strict liability and how it may apply to HAV’s.

Overview of LIDAR and Infrared Cameras for ADAS and Autonomous Sensing

This ½ day technical session is an abbreviated version of the 2 day SAE course on the same topic. The session will begin with a review of Infrared basics - electromagnetic spectrum, spectral irradiance, night vision and eye safety. We will then dive into LIDAR – flash, scanning, wavelengths, lasers, detectors, scanners, range and resolution calculations, optics, thermal design, challenges to automotive qualification and sensor fusion. The second half will cover Infrared camera topics with focus on driver monitoring for interior and machine vision for exterior.

Introduction to Contemporary Muffler Design Techniques

Most muffler design in the automotive industry is accomplished by using "cut-and-try" methods that rely on what has worked in the past and/or extensive full-scale testing on engines for validation. New computer software aimed at muffler design can shorten the design cycle and yield more effective results. This four hour seminar provides an introduction to the behavior of mufflers and silencers including a description of the two-port approach to muffler design. This seminar covers the acoustic simulation of muffler and silencer systems and the use of experimental methods to measure muffler performance.

Damage Tolerance for Gas Turbine Engines

The simultaneous demands for reliability and minimum weight for aircraft and propulsion systems offer some of the most challenging technical problems that structural and safety engineers can encounter. Although much information is available on fracture mechanics and aircraft damage tolerance, this course specifically relates to damage tolerance for gas turbine engines. The need to consider damage tolerance more broadly in new engine designs has just recently been written into FAR 33.70 and new EASA guidelines.

Robust Design

Engineers are taught to create designs that meet customer specifications. When creating these designs, the focus is usually on the nominal values rather than variation. Robustness refers to creating designs that are insensitive to variability in the inputs. Much of the literature on robustness is dedicated to experimental techniques, particularly Taguchi techniques, which advocate using experiments with replications to estimate variation. This course presents mathematical formulas based on derivatives to determine system variation based on input variation and knowledge of the engineering function.
