Aircraft Virtual Flight Testing and Certification in Off-nominal Multifactorial Situations

The behavior of a 'pilot-automaton-aircraft-operating environment' system (the System) in off-nominal situations with multiple risks can be unpredictably dangerous. Most multifactorial flight scenarios (corner cases) are considered as theoretically improbable. Such anomalies do nonetheless occur in operations and can lead to inconceivable accidents - 'black swan' events.

Control Systems Simplified

The advent of digital computers and the availability of ever cheaper and faster micro processors have brought a tremendous amount of control system applications to the automotive industry in the last two decades. From engine and transmission systems, to virtually all chassis subsystems (brakes, suspensions, and steering), some level of computer control is present. Control systems theory is also being applied to comfort systems such as climate control and safety systems such as cruise control or collision mitigation systems.

Intelligent Vehicles From Functional Framework to Vehicle Architecture

Considering the increasing demand for vehicle intelligence, more and more students, engineers and researchers are involved in this field. It can be challenging, however, to gain an understanding of the growing variety of intelligent vehicle technologies and how they must function together effectively as a system.  This course provides an overview of state-of-the-art intelligent vehicles, presents a systematic framework for intelligent technologies and vehicle-level architecture, and introduces testing methodologies to evaluate individual and integrated intelligent functions.

Photography for Accident Reconstruction, Product Liability, and Testing

Many technical projects, most vehicle and component testing, and all accident reconstructions, product failure analyses, and other forensic investigations, require photographic documentation. Roadway evidence disappears, tested or wrecked vehicles are repaired, disassembled, or scrapped, and components can be tested to failure. Photographs are frequently the only evidence that remains of a wreck, or the only records of subjects before or during tests. Making consistently good images during any inspection is a critical part of the evaluation process.

Model-based Development of Embedded Software in Compliance with ISO 26262 – Challenges and Effective Solutions

This training class describes how to develop and safeguard safety critical embedded software in serial projects with Simulink in compliance with ISO 26262 (part 6). Beginning with a general overview of the ISO standard, we proceed by focusing on the ISO 26262 requirements that are specifically relevant to model based development. We address the impact the standard has had on model-based development with Simulink, as well as the requirements for model and software architecture in safety critical software. We also look at modeling guidelines and testing before wrapping up the class by assessing ISO 26262 readiness of controller functions.

Introduction to Radar for Automotive Applications

This introduction to radar focuses on understanding how radars work and the trade offs that must be made to achieve its specified performance, focusing on applications to automotive safety and autonomy. The class includes demonstrations of radar signal outputs and describes the chain of hardware and software processing found in most radar systems. Participants will be exposed to all aspects of radar design at a level detailed enough to understand system engineering estimates for the major functions by examining the basic functions of radars, from the waveform generation in the transmitter, all the way to target detection in the receiver.

Practical NVH Signal Processing Methods

Signal processing has become a critical tool in optimizing vehicle noise. This seminar will help you to understand the foundation common to all NVH data acquisition equipment including digitizing, windows, aliasing, averaging techniques, and common analysis functions such as the power spectrum, transfer function and coherence. Fundamental concepts such as filtering, modulation, convolution, and correlation, as well as specialized techniques used in rotating machinery such as adaptive re-sampling and order tracking, will be covered.

Designing On-Board Diagnostics for Light and Medium Duty Emissions Control Systems

On-board diagnosis of engine and transmission systems has been mandated by government regulation for light and medium vehicles since the 1996 model year. The regulations specify many of the detailed features that on-board diagnostics must exhibit. In addition, the penalties for not meeting the requirements or providing in-field remedies can be very expensive. This course is designed to provide a fundamental understanding of how and why OBD systems function and the technical features that a diagnostic should have in order to ensure compliant and successful implementation.

Fundamentals and Applications of Electric Motors for Automotive Industries

As the electrification of automobiles is on the rise, it is imperative that the capabilities and limits of the associated devices and systems be understood at a higher level than previously considered adequate. For example, the Tesla Model S has 62 electric motors while the Model X has 70! They propel the vehicle and provide comfort too. Their design must reflect the worst case operating scenarios, duty cycles, environment, country of use and its standards, etc.

Problem Solving and Root Cause Analysis

Problems arise in all facets of life. This is particularly true in the business world. Problems impact all aspects of an organization’s operations such as; product development, product quality, process efficiency, marketing efforts, human relations, leadership efforts, financial execution and ultimate profitability. If these problems are not addressed, they inhibit the operation of the business and can eventually result in total failure. The ways in which problems are addressed, and the methodologies employed, determine the probability of successful problem resolution.

Introduction to the Secure Microkernel, seL4

Security continues to be an ever-growing concern in more and more design spaces. There are daily articles about security breaches and there is a need for much higher security through the entire system stack. Thorough testing of systems can lead to stronger security in systems, but testing can only expose so many vulnerabilities. Formal methods is another solution that ensures specific behaviors will not occur. seL4 is the first formally proven microkernel and it is open-source. This makes it a great solution for systems that need strong security.

Validating Requirements and Improving Specifications with Telematics Data

Field failures cause high warranty expenses, perhaps the highest quality cost. Failures occur when new designs are introduced, existing products are sold in new markets, and product specifications don’t reflect actual product usage. Any mistake in product specifications affects the entire product development process and cascades through the supply chain. New product requirements are developed using prior requirements, rely on customer surveys, use “expert” opinion, or are the result of compromises to meet timing or management direction. The resulting requirements may be excessive or insufficient.
