Model-Based Engineering Overview for Systems Management Practitioners

Use of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) has been growing across industry, extending beyond defense and aerospace to include various commercial enterprises such as automotive and healthcare. Tool vendors are quick to point out benefits of this model-based approach and practices but are not always clear how MBSE benefits can be realized on a project. When deployed successfully, several key considerations should be addressed that maximize the value for a use-case. This four-hour class will discuss the nature and purpose of the MBSE approach and how key information is used for successful MBSE deployment as it relates to Systems Management.

Comparison of ASME Y14.5 1994 to 2009 - Introductory Level

This 1-day introductory-level course offers an explanation of features in the ASME Y14.5-2009 Standard and compares them to the 1994 Standard. The course covers the pertinent changes made to the Y14.5 standard, including how the subject matter has been reorganized and about new sections that have been created for profile, orientation, and form. Each participant receives: An ASME Y14.5 1994-2009 Comparison Workbook,  Class handouts,  A GD&T Ultimate Pocket Guide (2009), and An ASME Y14.5 1994-2009 Comparison Chart Set. Newly acquired learning is reinforced throughout the class with numerous practice exercises.

DO-178C Practical Training

This course is offered in China only and presented in Mandarin Chinese. The course materials are bilingual (English and Chinese). RTCA DO-178C  is the globally-accepted standard for civil aviation software development and certification. Compliance with the objectives of DO-178C is the primary means for meeting airworthiness requirements and obtaining approval of airborne software in TC/STC/TSO, etc. Even after study of the DO-178C, many people lack experience producing DO-178C compliant airborne software in real applications.

Systems Engineering for Prognostics and Health Management (PHM) Systems

Most complex systems are moving toward a “smart” solution, with automated methods for identifying and diagnosing problems. This course will explore how efficient system scan be designed in an effective manner to ensure that they meet performance requirements. Because predictive maintenance is important to the aerospace industry, this course will address systems engineering (SE), review prognostic health management (PHM), and explain how you can utilize them to obtain a better system. Additionally, it will address requirements management; model-based design; and verification and validation.

A Primer on Regulations and Liability Considerations for HAV’s

Potential regulations surrounding the development, testing and commercial launch of Highly Automated Vehicles and possible liability exposure for the manufacturing and operation of Highly Automated Vehicles are fluid and changing areas, that will continue to evolve over the next several years. The first half of this course reviews where regulations are at the state and federal levels, what actions are currently under consideration, how current regulations will need to change to accommodate HAV’s, and how and when new regulations might be implemented. The second half covers both common law and strict liability and how it may apply to HAV’s.

Introduction to ISO 90012015 and IATF 169492016

The concept of a Quality System’s approach to business has been employed successfully and sometimes not so successfully for several decades. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has been supplying standards that list the key elements/clauses and requirements for building and implementing Quality Systems for over 30 years. These standards are based on the relatively simple concepts of Total Quality Management (TQM), essential principals of management, and a “Process” approach. These standards have been revised several times over the years to make them more realistic and user friendly.

Quality Function Deployment Transforming Voice of the Customer into Engineering Specifications

This course is offered in China only and presented in Mandarin Chinese. The course materials are bilingual (English and Chinese). Currently in the industry, especially within China, product requirement development is more of an experience-based process rather than a scientific methodology. This course addresses this issue and provides a more process-driven method for better requirement development through the Quality Function Deployment (QFD) methodology.  Real industrial examples are used to demonstrate how to systematically convert the voice of the customer data to engineering specifications using QFD.

Fundamentals and Applications of Electric Motors for Automotive Industries

As the electrification of automobiles is on the rise, it is imperative that the capabilities and limits of the associated devices and systems be understood at a higher level than previously considered adequate. For example, the Tesla Model S has 62 electric motors while the Model X has 70! They propel the vehicle and provide comfort too. Their design must reflect the worst case operating scenarios, duty cycles, environment, country of use and its standards, etc.

Design and Evaluation of Automotive Static Perceptual Quality

This course is offered in China only and presented in Mandarin Chinese. Static perceptual quality is the term applied to the customer’s first impression of a car at the beginning of the buying process including how it looks, feels, and smells. This “first feeling” largely determines whether the customer continues through the purchase process. At present, OEMs have no systematic method for static perceptual quality in the whole vehicle design and development process, especially for the static perceptual quality review in the early stage of design and development before data freezing.
