Control Systems Simplified

This course introduces the highly mathematical field of control systems focusing on what the classical control system tools do and how they can be applied to automotive systems. Dynamic systems, time/frequency responses, and stability margins are presented in an easy to understand format. Utilizing Matlab and Simulink, participants will learn how simple computer models are generated. Other fundamental techniques in control design such as PID and lead-lag compensators will be presented as well as the basics of embedded control systems.

Fundamentals of Powertrain Design for Hybrid Electric Vehicles

This course is offered in China only and presented in Mandarin Chinese. The course materials are bilingual (English and Chinese). Driven by high fuel prices, environmental regulations, and consumer demand, the market for hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) has experienced rapid growth. Every major automotive company produces an HEV. There are approximately fifty different HEV models on the market and over eight million HEVs already sold. In order to meet current and future demands in the HEV and PHEV markets, success will depend on engineering personnel knowing how to develop and manufacture HEV powertrains.

Fundamentals of Fatigue Analysis

Fatigue is a structural failure mode that must be recognized and understood to develop products that meet life cycle durability requirements. In the age of lightweighting, fatigue strength is an important vehicle design requirement as engineers struggle to meet stringent weight constraints without adversely impacting durability. This technical concept course introduces the fatigue failure mode and analysis methods. It explains the physics of material fatigue, including damage accumulation that may progress to product failure over time, and it provides the needed foundation to develop effective fatigue prediction capabilities.

Metal Forming

This course covers metal forming and related manufacturing processes, emphasizing practical applications. From forged or P/M connecting rods to tailor-welded blank forming, metal parts are integral to the automotive industry. As a high value adding category of manufacturing, metal forming is increasingly important to the core competency of automobile manufacturers and suppliers. A thorough survey of metal forming processes and metal forming mechanics will be performed, including bulk deformation, sheet-metal, and powder metallurgy operations. Design considerations are fully integrated into the course and are presented with every process.

Introduction to Commercial and Off-Road Vehicle Cooling Airflow Systems

Vehicle functional requirements, emission regulations, and thermal limits all have a direct impact on the design of a powertrain cooling airflow system. Given the expected increase in emission-related heat rejection, suppliers and vehicle manufacturers must work together as partners in the design, selection, and packaging of cooling system components. The goal of this two-day course is to introduce engineers and managers to the basic principles of cooling airflow systems for commercial and off-road vehicles.

Design Analysis of High Power Density Additively Manufactured Induction Motor

Induction machines (IM) are considered work horse for industrial applications due to their rugged, reliable and inexpensive nature; however, their low power density restricts their use in volume and weight limited environments such as an aerospace, traction and propulsion applications. Given recent advancements in additive manufacturing technologies, this paper presents opportunity to improve power density of induction machines by taking advantage of higher slot fill factor (SFF) (defined as ratio of bare copper area to slot area) is explored. Increase in SFF is achieved by deposition of copper in much more compact way than conventional manufacturing methods of winding in electrical machines. Thus a design tradeoff study for an induction motor with improved SFF is essential to identify and highlight the potentials of IM for high power density applications and is elaborated in this paper.

Metallic Materials Properties Development and Standardization (MMPDS) Handbook - 09

The Metallic Materials Properties Development and Standardization (MMPDS) Handbook, is an accepted source for metallic material and fastener system allowables recognized by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), all departments and agencies of the Department of Defense (DoD), and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), within the limitations of the certification requirements of the specific government agency. MMPDS-09 supersedes MMPDS-08and prior editions of the MMPDS as well as all editions of MIL-HDBK-5, Metallic Materials and Elements for Aerospace Vehicle Structures that was maintained by the U.S. Air Force. The last edition, MIL-HDBK-5J was cancelled by the U.S. Air Force in March of 2006.

The Global Market for Automotive Turbochargers: 2015 edition

Since the last edition of this report in 2013, the demand on automakers has been relentless in terms of improving fuel economy and reducing emissions, thus driving increased sales of forced induction systems. The use of pressure charging techniques has therefore expanded significantly. Recent years have seen the ascendancy of the turbocharger and its use by almost every major global manufacturer.

Range Extenders for Electric Vehicles Land, Water & Air 2015-2025

Half the electric vehicle market value lies in larger road vehicles, notably cars, and here the legal restrictions are weaker or non-existent, and range anxiety compels most people to buy hybrids if they go electric at all. Over eight million hybrid cars will be made in 2025, each with a range extender, the additional power source that distinguishes them from pure electric cars. Add to that significant money spent on the same devices in buses, military vehicles, boats and so on and a major new market emerges. Whereas today's range extenders usually consist of little more than off- the- shelf internal combustion engines, these are rapidly being replaced by second- generation range extenders consisting of piston engines designed from scratch for fairly constant load. However, a more radical departure is the third- generation micro turbines and fuel cells that work at constant load.
