Design Considerations for Secure Embedded Systems

Embedded hardware is everywhere you look today from your vehicle’s infotainment system to refrigerator to medical devices and everything else in-between. With so much exposure one would think that such devices are secure against attack; however, sadly for many devices this is not the case. For proof, just look no further than your local news reports. They are full of reports on devices being hacked. So, as engineers, how do we go about first identifying and mitigating (or capitalizing) the potential security vulnerabilities within these devices?

Theories and Methods of Future HMI Design for Automobiles

2020-11-12
HMI design is an Interdisciplinary, which is based on human cognitive psychology and combines humanities, sociology, aesthetics, information science and other disciplines. While automotive technologies can be applied regardless of regions, HMI must be localized, as it is closely related to regional culture, people's living habits and characteristics. At the same time, HMI design has its own complete theoretical system, research and design methods and testing methods, instead of relying on experience. The purpose of this course is to equip people involved in the automotive industry with a basic sense of HMI design of vehicles.

OBD Approval Process

2012-01-24
The OBD approval process can be a frustrating time for both manufacturer and ARB staff. For manufacturers, a long approval process can sometimes mean accepting deficiencies prematurely in exchange for an approval. For ARB staff, they are inundated with highly technical information which they must review, garner understanding of and then apply their experience to evaluate it for compliance. OBD approval anxiety can be minimized, if not avoided, when manufacturers understand ARBs expectations. This presentation will take you through some unwritten rules and common pitfalls which can impede the approval process, thus providing a guideline to a less painful and more efficient certification document review and approval. Comparing Dolly Rollover Testing to Steer-Induced Rollover Events for an Enhanced Understanding of Off-Road Rollover Dynamics

2011-11-01
The field of motor vehicle rollover research and testing has been one of multiple and varied approaches, dating back to at least the 1930's. The approach has been as simple as tipping a vehicle over at the top of a steep hill ( Wilson et al., 1972 ), to as complex as releasing a vehicle from an elevated roll spit mounted to the rear of a moving tractor and trailer ( Cooper et al., 2001 and Carter et al., 2002 ). Fiber Optic Strain Sensor Standardization - International and European Activities

2012-03-16
There are worldwide activities in developing guidelines and standards for fiber optic sensors. Fiber optic sensors (FOS) are increasingly demanded for structural health monitoring purposes and for measurement of physical and chemical quantities because of their specific features. However, they are not yet widely established for practical use due to a lack of guidelines and confirmed standards. Therefore, there are few groups worldwide which are very active in developing standards for use of FOS in different fields, particularly driven from aircraft industry, oil industry or the necessity to provide sensor systems for health monitoring of structures with a certain level of risk. The benefits of guidelines and/or standards on the way to well-validated and well-specified sensor systems will be presented by means of related examples. The presentation will also give an overview on the state-of-the-art and most relevant activities. Results achieved are discussed.

Challenges in Automotive Electrification and Powertrain Component Development

2011-11-07
An overview of Daimler?s progression to advance powertrain technology in a growth industry shows many different solutions to improvement in transportation. Daimler continues to make breakthroughs in technology development and application building on 125 years of automotive development. Optimization of current powertrains will enable a significant gain in CO2/mi reductions, that dependent on product mix can be augmented with additional technologies. There is however no bypass to some form of electrification, enabling efficiency gains and alternative forms of power supply. Development of hybrid powertrains continues in an established manner and enhanced development of further electrified powertrains are in development. Organizationally and technically, significant skills and adjustments need to continue to be undertaken enabling OEMs and in particular the supply base to develop optimized solutions efficiently. The outlook is bright for novel component development and innovation.

Review and Assessment of the ISO 26262 Draft Road Vehicle - Functional Safety

2012-09-18
ISO 26262 is the first comprehensive automotive safety standard that addresses the safety of the growing number of electric/electronic and software intensive features in today's road vehicles. This paper assesses the standard's ability to provide safety assurance. The strengths of the standard are: (1) emphasizing safety management and safety culture; (2) prescribing a system engineering development process; (3) setting up a framework for hazard elimination early in the design process; (4) disassociating system safety risk assessment from component probabilistic failure rate. The third and fourth strengths are noteworthy departure from the philosophy of IEC61508. This standard has taken much-needed and very positive steps towards ensuring the functional safety of the modern road vehicles. SAE publications from industry show a lot of enthusiasm towards this standard.

Validating Time Triggered Ethernet on a Space Vehicle

2012-03-14
This presentation provides a overview of validating Time Triggered Ethernet (TTE) for use as the network to interconnect the avionics for manned Space Vehicle. The next manned Space Vehicle will use Time Triggered-Gigabit Ethernet (TT-GbE) leveraged from commercial development of TTE critical Intellectual Property. There are several validation considerations of either separating TTE segments or adding new TTE segments onto the network caused by the different phases of a manned space vehicle from pre-launch to re-entry. Considerable amount of validation testing has been successfully performed on TT-GbE/TTE. Presenter Victor Revelle, Honeywell International Inc.
