Design for Manufacturing & Assembly

Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFM+A), pioneered by Boothroyd and Dewhurst, has been used by many companies around the world to develop creative product designs that use optimal manufacturing and assembly processes. Correctly applied, DFM+A analysis leads to significant reductions in production cost, without compromising product time-to-market goals, functionality, quality, serviceability, or other attributes. This seminar will include information on how DFM+A fits in with QFD, Concurrent Engineering, Robust Engineering, and other disciplines.

Fundamentals of Fatigue Analysis

Fatigue is a structural failure mode that must be recognized and understood to develop products that meet life cycle durability requirements. In the age of lightweighting, fatigue strength is an important vehicle design requirement as engineers struggle to meet stringent weight constraints without adversely impacting durability. This technical concept course introduces the fatigue failure mode and analysis methods. It explains the physics of material fatigue, including damage accumulation that may progress to product failure over time, and it provides the needed foundation to develop effective fatigue prediction capabilities.

Theories and Methods of Future HMI Design for Automobiles

HMI design is an Interdisciplinary, which is based on human cognitive psychology and combines humanities, sociology, aesthetics, information science and other disciplines. While automotive technologies can be applied regardless of regions, HMI must be localized, as it is closely related to regional culture, people's living habits and characteristics. At the same time, HMI design has its own complete theoretical system, research and design methods and testing methods, instead of relying on experience. The purpose of this course is to equip people involved in the automotive industry with a basic sense of HMI design of vehicles.

Fundamentals of Metrology and Quality

Metrology is an important component in manufacturing because it provides a rigorous method for Quality personnel to manage risk and uncertainty.  To mitigate risk successfully and develop techniques for problem solving, it is important to evaluate sources of uncertainty, verification, and non-conformance.   This seminar is intended to introduce the various principles associated with uncertainty of measurement; to explore the history of measurement, and to clearly identify calibration, true values, errors, uncertainty, traceability, random and systematic effects, repeatability and reproducibility.

Fundamentals of Threaded Fasteners

Fastener experts believe that upwards of 95% of all fastener failures are the result of either the wrong fastener for the job or improper installation. Whether this shocking figure is accurate or not, it is irrefutable that threaded fasteners are poorly misunderstood by many in both the fastener and user communities. In October 1990 the USS Iwo Jima suffered a catastrophic steam valve accident minutes after leaving port following repairs to its steam plant. In one of the single most deadly events of Operation Desert Storm, ten of the eleven crewmen present in the engine compartment would lose their lives.

Advanced Vehicle Dynamics for Passenger Cars and Light Trucks

This interactive seminar will take you beyond the basics of passenger car and light truck vehicle dynamics by applying advanced theory, physical tests and CAE to the assessment of ride, braking, steering and handling performance. Governing state-space equations with transfer functions for primary ride and open loop handling will be developed & analyzed. Building on the analysis of the state space equations, common physical tests and their corresponding CAE solutions for steady state and transient vehicle events will be presented. The "state-of-the-art" of vehicle dynamics CAE will be discussed.

Accelerated Test Methods for Ground and Aerospace Vehicle Development

Engineers and managers involved with product development are constantly challenged to reduce time to market, minimize warranty costs, and increase product quality. With less and less time for testing, the need for effective accelerated test procedures has never been greater. This course covers the benefits, limitations, processes, and applications of several proven accelerated test methods including accelerated reliability, step stress, FSLT (Full System Life Test), FMVT® (Failure Mode Verification Testing), HALT (Highly Accelerated Life Testing), and HASS (Highly Accelerated Stress Screening).

Reverse Engineering Technology of Reinvention

During the past decade reverse engineering has become a common and acceptable practice utilized by many original equipment manufacturers and suppliers. This course focuses on the application of modern technologies used to decode the design details and manufacturing processes of an existing part in the absence of the original design data. It emphasizes the real-life practice of reverse engineering in the aerospace industry from both scientific and legal points of view. Attendees will learn the applicability and limitations of reverse engineering through case studies and hands-on exercises.

Technical Path and Case Analysis of Lightweight Forward Engineering for Vehicle Development and Design

The importance of weight reduction in vehicle design is well known. In recent years, OEMs have been working on vehicle lightweight research and application, particularly for new energy vehicles. Currently, many Chinese OEMs establish a lightweight target and expect that weight savings will be distributed among the vehicle’s various systems.  This tends to keep the weight reduction effort at the level of parts or partial weight loss design development and application.

Design and Evaluation of Automotive Static Perceptual Quality

Static perceptual quality is the term applied to the customer’s first impression of a car at the beginning of the buying process including how it looks, feels, and smells.  This “first feeling” largely determines whether the customer continues through  the purchase process. At present, OEMs have no systematic method for static perceptual quality in the whole vehicle design and development process, especially for the static perceptual quality review in the early stage of design and development before data freezing. Usually, it can only be evaluated after the vehicle is produced and assembled.

Validating Requirements and Improving Specifications with Telematics Data

Field failures cause high warranty expenses, perhaps the highest quality cost. Failures occur when new designs are introduced, existing products are sold in new markets, and product specifications don’t reflect actual product usage. Any mistake in product specifications affects the entire product development process and cascades through the supply chain. New product requirements are developed using prior requirements, rely on customer surveys, use “expert” opinion, or are the result of compromises to meet timing or management direction. The resulting requirements may be excessive or insufficient.
