Furthering the Evolution of Function and Performance for ABS Systems

Currently, safety and environmental issues are a major concern in the automotive industry. ABS has become the vital brake system, supporting one of the fundamental functions of automotive (running, turning, and stopping). Automobile manufacturers are moving towards standardized installation of this system as a safety/prevention measure. The system itself is using more advanced technology and increasing performance, such as a separate braking feature on individual wheels. Other new features include the BA (brake assisting) System and the Stability Control System. Accordingly, a high level of technology and performance is required for MCUs themselves.

Development of a Compact Scan Laser Radar

This paper relates to a distance detecting sensor, specifically a scan radar laser used for a vehicle distance warning system or an intelligent cruise control system. In developing the scan laser radar, we used a light-based scan-action system working via an electromagnetic actuator and ICs in place of the internal circuitry for substantial parts count reduction. The compact scan laser radar is smaller in size and lower in price with higher performance than its predecessors (1). This has made it possible to offer a lower-priced, compact, lightweight, and easy-to-install scan laser radar.

Study of Oxygen Storage Performance Modeling of Catalyst Degradation

Oxygen storage performance is modeled with the goal of optimizing the performance of three-way catalysts and developing an on-board catalyst degradation diagnosis (OBD) system. Oxygen storage performance is closely correlated with catalyst performance and degradation, and thus can serve as an excellent indicator for accessing the performance of catalysts[1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6]. In experiments using actual exhaust gas, it was found that the rate of oxygen storage and discharge under actual operating conditions exhibited sufficiently fast chemical reactions and were dependent on the supply rate of reactant species. We also found that the higher the catalyst temperature, the greater the oxygen storage capacity. These experimental results were modeled in a general control system development tool environment.

Development of Three-Motor Electric Vehicle “EMIRAI 2 xEV”

Mitsubishi Electric has developed a concept car “EMIRAI 2 xEV” that features an electric vehicle (EV) powertrain for safe, comfortable, eco-friendly driving experiences in the future. The vehicle was exhibited during the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show and the 2014 Automotive Engineering Exposition. The xEV is a four-wheel-drive EV with three motors: a water-cooled front motor and two air-cooled rear motors with integrated inverters. The rear wheels can be driven independently. The degrees of freedom of the actuation can realize improved maneuverability and safety. The vehicle is also equipped with an onboard charger with a built-in step down DC/DC converter, an EV control unit, a battery management unit, and electric power steering. All of the instruments are developed by Mitsubishi Electric. Motion control systems for the xEV have been developed based on our proprietary motor control technology.
