Temperature Difference Control Strategy and Flow Field Uniformity Analysis of Ni-Mh Power Battery Package

The nonuniformity property of the temperature field distribution will not only affect on the battery charging and discharging performance but also its lifetime. In this paper the elementary structural design is implemented for Ni-Mh battery package and the corresponding test platform is constructed from the point of view of temperature difference control strategy, the test results show that the present structural design schemes can effectively restrain temperature difference enlargement among the battery stacks. Through the application of adopting the flow field uniformity method to control temperature difference, and flow field optimization inside the battery package, it is found that the flow field velocity change quantity ΔV is gradually reduced as the increase of the afflux hood angle Ak and air vent width Da, and the difference of battery temperature is relatively lower, which denoting that the corresponding relationship can be created based on test data.

Adhesion Control Method Based on Fuzzy Logic Control for Four-Wheel Driven Electric Vehicle

The adhesion control is the basic technology of active safety for the four-wheel driven EV. In this paper, a novel adhesion control method based on fuzzy logic control is proposed. The control system can maximize the adhesion force without road condition information and vehicle speed signal. Also, the regulation torque to prevent wheel slip is smooth and the vehicle driving comfort is greatly improved. For implementation, only the rotating speed of the driving wheel and the motor driving torque signals are needed, while the derived information of the wheel acceleration and the skid status are used. The simulation and road test results have shown that the adhesion control method is effective for preventing slip and lock on the slippery road condition.

Differential Drive Assisted Steering Control for an In-wheel Motor Electric Vehicle

For an electric vehicle driven by four in-wheel motors, the torque of each wheel can be controlled precisely and independently. A closed-loop control method of differential drive assisted steering (DDAS) has been proposed to improve vehicle steering properties based on those advantages. With consideration of acceleration requirement, a three dimensional characteristic curve that indicates the relation between torque and angle of the steering wheel at different vehicle speeds was designed as a basis of the control system. In order to deal with the saturation of motor's output torque under certain conditions, an anti-windup PI control algorithm was designed. Simulations and vehicle tests, including pivot steering test, lemniscate test and central steering test were carried out to verify the performance of the DDAS in steering portability and road feeling.

Instantaneous Optimization Energy Management for Extended-Range Electric Vehicle Based on Minimum Loss Power Algorithm

Most of the existing energy management strategies for Extended-Range Electric Vehicles (E-REVs) are heuristic, which restricts coordination between the battery and the Range Extender. This paper presents an instantaneous optimization energy management strategy based on the Minimum Loss Power Algorithm (MLPA) for a fuel cell E-REV. An instantaneous loss power function of power train system is constructed by considering the charge and discharge efficiency of the battery, together with the working efficiency of the fuel cell Range Extender. The battery working mode and operating points of the fuel cell Range Extender are decided by an instantaneous optimization module (an artificial neural network) that aims to minimize the loss power function at each time step.

Improvement on Energy Efficiency of the Spark Ignition System

Future clean combustion engines tend to increase the cylinder charge to achieve better fuel economy and lower exhaust emissions. The increase of the cylinder charge is often associated with either excessive air admission or exhaust gas recirculation, which leads to unfavorable ignition conditions at the ignition point. Advanced ignition methods and systems have progressed rapidly in recent years in order to suffice the current and future engine development, and a simple increase of energy of the inductive ignition system does not often provide the desired results from a cost-benefit point of view. Proper design of the ignition system circuit is required to achieve certain spark performances.

Driver Behavior Classification under Cut-In Scenarios Using Support Vector Machine Based on Naturalistic Driving Data

Cut-in scenario is common in traffic and has potential collision risk. Human driver can detect other vehicle’s cut-in intention and take appropriate maneuvers to reduce collision risk. However, autonomous driving systems don’t have as good performance as human driver. Hence a deeper understanding on driving behavior is necessary. How to make decisions like human driver is an important problem for automated vehicles. In this paper, a method is proposed to classify the dangerous cut-in situations and normal ones. Dangerous cases were extracted automatically from naturalistic driving database using specific detection criteria. Among those cases, 70 valid dangerous cut-in cases were selected manually. The largest deceleration of subject vehicle is over 4 m/s2. Besides, 249 normal cut-in cases were extracted by going through video data of 2000km traveled distance. In normal driving cases, subject vehicle may brake or keep accelerating and the largest deceleration was less than 3 m/s2.

Tracking of Extended Objects with Multiple Three-Dimensional High-Resolution Automotive Millimeter Wave Radar

Estimating the motion state of peripheral targets is a very important part in the environment perception of intelligent vehicles. The accurate estimation of the motion state of the peripheral targets can provide more information for the intelligent vehicle planning module which means the intelligent vehicle is able to anticipate hazards ahead of time. To get the motion state of the target accurately, the target’s range, velocity, orientation angle and yaw rate need to be estimated. Three-dimensional high-resolution automotive millimeter wave radar can measure radial range, radial velocity, azimuth angle and elevation angle about multiple reflections of an extended target. Thus, the three-dimensional range information and three-dimensional velocity information can be obtained. With multiple three-dimensional high-resolution automotive millimeter-wave radar, it is possible to measure information in various directions of a target.

Naturalistic Driving Behavior Analysis under Typical Normal Cut-In Scenarios

Cut-in scenarios are common and of potential risk in China but Advanced Driver Assistant System (ADAS) doesn’t work well under such scenarios. In order to improve the acceptance of ADAS, its reactions to Cut-in scenarios should meet driver’s driving habits and expectancy. Brake is considered as an express of risk and brake tendency in normal Cut-in situations needs more investigation. Under critical Cut-in scenarios, driver tends to brake hard to eliminate collision risk when cutting in vehicle right crossing lane. However, under less critical Cut-in scenarios, namely normal Cut-in scenarios, driver brakes in some cases and takes no brake maneuver in others. The time when driver initiated to brake was defined as key time. If driver had no brake maneuver, the time when cutting-in vehicle right crossed lane was defined as key time. This paper focuses on driver’s brake tendency at key time under normal Cut-in situations.

Boosted Current Spark Strategy for Lean Burn Spark Ignition Engines

Spark ignition systems with the capability of providing spark event with either higher current level or longer discharge duration has been developed in recent years to help IC engines towards clean combustion with higher efficiency under lean/diluted intake charge. In this research, a boosted current spark strategy was proposed to investigate the effect of spark discharge current level and discharge duration on the combustion process. Firstly, the discharge characteristics of a boosted current spark system were tested with a traditional spark plug under crossflow conditions, and results showed that the spark channel was more stable, and was stretched much longer when the discharge current was boosted. Then the boosted current strategy was used in a spark ignition engine operating under lean conditions. Boosted current was added to the spark channel with different timing, duration, and current levels.

Electromagnetic compatibility of electric vehicles is withstanding great challenges because of multiple ECU and actuators distributed in vehicle. At present, researches on electromagnetic characteristics of vehicle mainly focus on rectification based on the EMC experiment, which take much time and energy. Thus, this paper adopts the way of computer simulation studying the electromagnetism model and electromagnetic characteristics of electric vehicle with following procedure. Firstly, the equivalent model of wiring harness was deduced and built. Harnesses were divided into different groups according to terminal reflection property. The equivalent unit parameter matrix was calculated to build the equivalent wiring harness. The crosstalk and radiation cases were set to check the equivalent harness method.

Development of Hardware and Software for On-Board Hydrogen System

The fuel cell engine is considered to be the ultimate technical direction for the development of vehicle power. The on-board hydrogen supply system is important in fuel cell system. However, the on-board hydrogen supply system is diversified, and the management is mostly integrated in the engine controller. Thus, the fuel cell engine controller is excessive coupled with design of on-board hydrogen supply system. In order to improve the portability and compatibility of the fuel cell engine controller, an independent controller of the on-board hydrogen supply system is designed. Meanwhile, the hardware and software are developed to control 35Mpa gaseous hydrogen storage system. After being tested in a high-pressure environment, the controller can detect temperature, pressure and ambient hydrogen concentration of the hydrogen supply system. Simultaneously, it can drive and control the hydrogen cylinder valve.

A Progress Review on Gas Purge for Enhancing Cold Start Performance in PEM Fuel Cell

Cold start capability is one of remaining major challenges in realizing PEMFC (Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell) technology for automotive applications. Gas purge is a common and integral shutdown procedure of a PEMFC automotive in subzero temperature. A dryer membrane electrode assembly (MEA) can store more water before it gets saturated and ice starts to penetrate in the open pores of porous media, thus enhancing cold start capability of a PEMFC. Therefore, gas purge is always performed prior to fuel cell shutdown to minimize residual water in a PEMFC. In the hope of improving effectiveness of purge in a PEMFC vehicle, two important purge parameters are evaluated including purge time and energy requirement. In practice, an optimized gas purge protocol should be developed with minimal parasitic energy, short purge duration and no degradation of components. To conclude, the cold start capability and performance can be consolidated by proper design of gas purge strategies.

Performance Prediction of Automotive Fuel Cell Stack with Genetic Algorithm-BP Neural Network

Fuel cell vehicle commercialization and mass production are challenged by the durability of fuel cells. In order to research the durability of fuel cell stack, it is necessary to carry out the related durability test. The performance prediction of fuel cell stack can be based on a short time durability test result to accurately predict the performance of the fuel cell stack, so it can ensure the timeliness of the test results and reduce the cost of test. In this paper, genetic algorithm-BP neural network (GA-BPNN) is proposed to modeling automotive fuel cell stack to predict the performance of it. Based on the strong global searching ability of genetic algorithm, the initial weights and threshold selection of neural networks are optimized to solve the shortcoming that the random selection of the initial weights and thresholds of BP neural network which can easily lead to the local optimal value.

Vibration Analysis of Series-parallel Hybrid Powertrain System under Typical Working Condition and Modes

Powertrain system of series-parallel hybrid vehicle contains multiple excitation sources like engine, motor and generator. The reduction of noise and vibration is quite difficult during multiplex working modes or the switch of modes. Aiming at Series-parallel hybrid powertrain system which contains engine, motor and planetary gear subsystems, this paper considered a typical working condition which is based on the power control strategy and established the torsional vibration mechanical model of hybrid powertrain system. The inherent characteristics and transient vibration response of the electric mode, hybrid mode and parking charging mode were studied and it was discovered that the repetitive frequency of the powertrain system under the three working modes is the same which is only related to inertia and meshing stiffness of planetary gear system. The non-repetitive frequency and corresponding vibration modes under the electric mode and parking charging mode are both close.

Gear Tooth Modification of EV Powertrain for Vibration and Noise Reduction

In order to research the vibration and noise reduction in pure electric vehicle power-train, a comprehensive work is to simulate the power-train incentive of a high-speed pure electric vehicle, and indicates significant impact of gear mesh system on the power-train NVH performance. Therefore, it is necessary to further study the impact of meshing gear system on electric vehicle power-train vibration and noise performance and seek reasonable methods to reduce the vibration and noise. In this paper, a typical pure electric vehicle's powertrain was used to conduct vibration and noise dynamic simulation. Firstly, the power train model was established considering the gear meshing stiffness, transmission errors, bearing factors and shell flexible, then the vibration and sound radiation dynamic response of power-train was simulated. Based on the accuracy of prediction model, a gear tooth modification was carried out for vibration and noise optimization.

Multi-Target Tracking Algorithm in the Complicated Road Condition for Automotive Millimeter-wave Radar

Automotive radar is the most important component in the autonomous driving system, which detects the obstacles, vehicles and pedestrians around with acceptable cost. The target tracking is one of the key functions in the automotive radar which estimates the position and speed of the targets having regarding to the measurement inaccuracy and interferences. Modern automotive radar requires a multi-target tracking algorithm, as in the radar field of view hundreds of targets can present. In practice, the automotive radar faces very complicated and fast-changing road conditions, for example tunnels and curved roads. The targets’ unpredictable movements and the reflections of the electromagnetic wave from the tunnel walls and the roads will make the multi-target tracking a difficult task. Such situation may last several seconds so that the continuous tracks of the targets cannot be maintained and the tracks are dropped mistakenly.

Finite Element Analysis of Cylinder Gasket under Cylinder Pressure and Structural Optimization of the Cylinder Gasket

This paper aimed at a gasoline engine "cylinder head- cylinder gasket-cylinder body-bolt" sealing system, built the 3D solid model and the finite element model of the assembly, and calculated the stress and strain of the cylinder gasket under the cylinder pressure and the deformation of the engine block. In addition, based on the calculation results, this paper put forward the optimization scheme of the cylinder gasket structure, re-established the simulation model, and get the calculation results. The calculation results showed that the cylinder pressure had influence on the sealing performance of the cylinder gasket, and the influence of cylinder pressure should be taken into consideration when designing the cylinder gasket. When the cylinder pressure was applied, the overall contact stress of the cylinder gasket had decreased, and the whole remaining height of the gasket had increased.

Research on a New Electromagnetic Valve Actuator Based on Voice Coil Motor for Automobile Engines

The electromagnetic valve actuator (EMVA) is considered a technological solution for decoupling between crankshaft and camshaft to improve engine performance, emissions, and fuel efficiency. Conventional EMVA consists of two electromagnets, an armature, and two springs has been proved to have the drawbacks of fixed lift, impact noise, complex control method and large power consumption. This paper proposes a new type of EMVA that uses voice coil motor (VCM) as electromagnetic valve actuator. This new camless valvetrain (VEMA) is characterized by simple structure, flexible controllable and low actuating power. VCM provides an almost flat force versus stroke curve that is very useful for high precision trajectory control to achieve soft landing within simple control algorithm.

Emergency Steering Evasion Control by Combining the Yaw Moment with Steering Assistance

The coordinated control of stability and steering systems in collision avoidance steering evasion has been widely studied in vehicle active safety area, but the studies are mainly aimed at autonomous vehicle without driver or conventional combustion engine vehicle. This paper focuses on the control of hybrid vehicle integrated with rear hub in emergency steering evasion situation, and considering the driver’s characteristics. First, the mathematics model of vehicle dynamics and driver has been given. Second, based on the planned steering evasion path, the model predictive control method is presented for achieving higher evasion path tracking accuracy under driver’s steering input. The prediction model includes an adaptive preview distance driver model and a vehicle dynamics model to predict the driver input and the vehicle trajectory.

One New Transient Transfer Path Analyses of Vehicle Interior Vibration Excited by Vertical Speed Hump

Vertical excitations from obstacles on public road are typical and likely to increase vehicle interior vibration through major paths of wheel spindle-suspension-body. A new transient transfer path analysis (TTPA) methodology is presented combining the substructure reverse matrix method based on FRFs with operational excitation. Additionally, a new kind of experimental method is applied to solve an engineering problem and also validates the TTPA theory above. There are three steps in all. Firstly, vibration in Z direction of wheel spindle was collected in one proving ground and represented on MTS 320 road simulator bench after many times of iteration of piston signals. This procedure guarantees excitation decoupling in one certain direction so it leads to accurate frequency response functions (FRFs) under transient shocking excitation. Secondly, the new transient transfer path analysis approach was used to calculate vibration contribution of wheel-suspension-body.
