This document describes the CAD model data of legs and back hardware available from SAE for the HPM-1 three-dimensional H-point machine. The elements of the CAD model include the feet, lower and thighs as well as headroom probe and t-bar. Also included are datum points and lines, and calibration references. The intended purpose for this information is to provide a CAD reference for design and benchmarking as well as a calibration reference for the physical HPM-1 audits. The content and format of the data files that are available are also described. The actual CAD model files are included with this product and are provided in the following formats: CATIA v4 (without parametrics), CATIA v5 (without parametrics), IGES, and STEP.

These H-point devices provide a method for reliable layout and measurement of occupant seating compartments and/or seats. This document specifies the procedures for installing the H-point machine (HPM) to using the HPM to audit (verify) key reference points and measurements in a vehicle. The devices are intended for application at designated seating positions. They are not to be construed as tools that measure or indicate occupant capabilities or comfort.

Benchmarking is used to discover the design intent measurements for seating compartments in vehicles when these measurements are either unknown or are specified using differing measurement procedures. This document provides the specifications and procedures to establish consistent measurements for benchmarking vehicle seating positions using the H-Point Machine (HPM-II1) described in SAE J4002 and the H-Point Design tool (HPD) described in SAE J4004. The HPM-II is a physical tool used to establish key reference points and measurements in a vehicle (Figure 1). The HPD is a CAD tool that aids in the benchmarking process (see Appendix A and SAE J4004).

This SAE Recommended Practice establishes the location of both driver and passenger heads inside a vehicle for the purpose of describing spatial requirements. Driver lateral head position includes head movement looking to the left and right while driving. Ellipitical (head position contour) models in both two and three dimensions are used to represent 95th and 99th percentiles of driver and passenger head locaitons. this document describes two different procedures for locating driver head position contours, depending on whether or not the driver workspace is like that found in a passenger car or a heavy truck. the need for two different procedures has led to a vehicle classificaiton scheme which labels vehicles as either Class A (passenger cars) or Class B (heavy trucks) according to definitions given in SAe J1100 APR97.

This procedure provides a method of determining a benchmark SgRP position for adjustable Driver’s seats in Class A vehicles where the design intent information is not available. Class A vehicles include passenger cars, multipurpose passengervehicles, and vans with Seat Heights (H30) greater than 127 mm and less than 405 mm for the purposes of this document. Once the Driver’s Seat Benchmark SgRP is determined other seating positions can be readily benchmarked based on the standard procedures. This document references installation procedures using the SAE J826 H-point Machine. If desired the document can be adapted to use the HPM-II by substituting the appropriate SAE J4002 instatllation procedures. In that case, the use of the HPM-II should be clearly documented. Since the SgRP is the basis for many interior benchmark dimensions this information can be used to assess or compare vehicle interiors in a standard repeatable way based on the packaging limitations of the property.

This document provides dimensional definitions that facilitate geometric quantification and evaluation of seats. Linear, radial, and angular surface dimensions included in this document are intended to approximate shape characteristics based on defined points of interest and not as a method needed to reproduce complex surface contours. In many cases, other points across the seat surface shape may exceed or not reach the boundary defined by these simple geometric definitions. Dimensions described in this document have been designed to be measured in a CAD environment; however, many dimensions require the HPD position and attitude. This can be obtained by physically establishing H-point using benchmark or auditing procedures OR by measuring the HPD within a CAD or modelling system. Refer to the appropriate document for these procedures.
