This document defines a physical layer having a higher bandwidth capacity than the classic physical layers defined for SAE J1939-14 by using flexible data rates. CAN controllers are now available which support the Flexible Data Rate Frame Format as defined in ISO 11898-1:2015. These controllers and compatible high speed transceivers are required for use on SAE J1939-17 networks. This SAE Recommended Practice is intended for light- and heavy-duty vehicles on- or off-road as well as appropriate stationary applications which use vehicle derived components (e.g., generator sets). Vehicles of interest include but are not limited to: on- and off-highway trucks and their trailers; construction equipment; and agricultural equipment and implements.

The SAE J1939 documents are intended for light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles used on or off road as well as appropriate stationary applications which use vehicle derived components (e.g., generator sets). Vehicles of interest include, but are not limited to, on- and off-highway trucks and their trailers, construction equipment, and agricultural equipment and implements. The purpose of these documents is to provide an open interconnect system for electronic systems. It is the intention of these documents to allow Electronic Control Units to communicate with each other by providing a standard architecture. This particular document, SAE J1939-22, describes the data link layer using the Flexible Data Rate Extended Frame Format (FEFF) with 29-bit Identifiers, as defined in ISO 11898-1, December 2015. For SAE J1939 no alternative data link layers are permitted using FEFF messages.

It is the intention of these documents to allow electronic devices to communicate with each other by providing a standard architecture. This particular document describes the Network Layer which defines the requirements and services needed for the electronic devices (Network Interconnection ECUs) providing intercommunications between different segments of the SAE J1939 Vehicle Network. It also defines the various types of Network Interconnection ECUs and the functions they provide. The information in this document applies only to ECUs that are intended to provide networking services. It is not necessary for an ECU to provide any of these services in order to be compliant with the SAE J 1939 protocol.
