Heat Augmentation Prevention Shield on Tractor Horizontal Exhaust Pipe for Field Fire Safety Compliance

Off highways vehicles especially tractors are prone to operate on fields where tractors are exposed to dry crops, chaffs (the husks of corn or other seed separated by winnowing or threshing) and particles which can catch fire easily when it is exposed to surface/skin temperature of more than 200 degree Celsius. It will be a basic projection that tractor will be having vertical exhaust tube at a height but there are certain tractors and applications where exhaust pipe must be below certain height, and which will be close to the ground. In these scenarios the skin temperature of exposed exhaust tail pipe part must be within a limit and that must be within the existing design. Break firing point of chaffs and husk also experimented at different moisture level. Several options are being verified on different heat flow and geometry changes, additional air entry jet nozzle with double pipe arrangement.

Improvement of Heat Resistance in the Wet Friction System by Chromium Plating Reaction Plates

In recent years, greater load capacity for automatic transmission, solution to higher heat resistance and more stable friction characteristics have been required principally to wet friction plate. It, however, was found that the damage of clutch pack was caused by the increased load not only to the wet friction plate but also steel reaction plate. From the understanding on the study mentioned above, we decided to investigate the methods for higher heat resistance of clutch pack through the improvement of reaction plate on its surface in consideration of its surface processing and surface itself. From the experiments applied to SAE#2 tester, we have found that chromium-plating reaction plates are effective for improvement of heat resistance and stable friction characteristics of clutch packs in automatic transmissions. Chromium-plating prevents considerably heat spots on reaction plates and ensure stability of friction coefficent.

The Understanding of Grooving and Surface Preparation of High Heat Resistant Materials for Heavy-Duty Vehicles

Recently high heat resistant friction materials containing synthetic fibers have been developed to meet the requirements from heavy-duty vehicle manufactures. However, traditional cut in groove process (hereafter, CIG process) cannot cut grooves on these materials clearly. Projection near groove and fuzz inside of groove exist after the CIG process. The projection and fuzz are generally considered the reason of high drag torque during idling [1]. But very little information was provided to deal with the projection and fuzz and how to reduce the drag torque caused by projection and fuzz. In this paper, various processes will be discussed to reduce drag torque and an optimized groove specification will also be proposed for high heat resistant friction materials for heavy-duty vehicles.

Performance parameters for application of sintered metallic and heat-resistant carbon friction facings to oil cooled clutches for heavy duty service vehicles are presented. Design factors to improve performance and durability of opposing discs are discussed. Future requirements for increased energy absorption beyond capability of currently available friction material is anticipated and reinforced TFE material is proposed to satisfy these requirements.

Development of Intercooler Hose for Future Engine

Current intercooler hoses, which are made from fluorocarbon rubber (FKM) and silicone rubber (VMQ) exhibit high heat resistance and durability. However, they will be used in more severe use environments, and there is a risk of problems arising with their current material composition. This investigation into issues concerning intercooler hoses in future engines found that FKM mechanical properties were insufficient under high temperature environments. In this research, efforts to improve the mechanical properties of FKM focused on the low durability of the internal FKM crosslinking points as the cause of this insufficiency. The current crosslinking method has excellent acid resistance and cannot be modified. An effective improvement the properties was therefore sought by adding a new distinct crosslinking network while preserving the current level of acid resistance of the existing network. Carbon black gel was used as a reinforcing agent to form the new network.

Development of Heat Resistant Long Life Through Hardening Bearing Steel (STJ2)

The development of a long life rolling element bearing for use under severe conditions is fundamental and important technology from an economic and environmental standpoint. Previously, NTJ2 was developed as a semi-heat resistant long life bearing steel, using silicon as an alloying element to enhance its heat resistance and life. It is thought, though, that the demand for a bearing material that can withstand higher temperatures and have a longer life than NTJ2 will be needed in the future. Thus, a new heat resistant, long life material called STJ2 was developed optimizing the alloying elements in the silicon-alloyed bearing steel. The new steel has good dimensional stability to 250°C, long life and is very resistant to surface damage.

Cost effective and Sustainable Alternate Material for Air Brake Tubings (ABT) in Commercial Vehicles

The automotive industry is constantly looking for new alternate material and cost is one of the major driving factors for selecting the right material. ABT is a safety critical part and care has to be taken while selecting the appropriate material. Polyamide (PA12) [1] is the commonly available material which is currently used for ABT applications. Availability and material cost is always a major concern for commercial vehicle industries. This paper presents the development of ABT with an alternative material which has superior heat resistance. Thermoplastic Elastomer Ether Ester Block Copolymer (TEEE) [3] materials were tried in place Polyamide 12 for many good reasons. The newly employed material has better elastic memory and improved resistance to battery acid, paints and solvents. It doesn't require plasticizer for extrusion process because of which it has got excellent long term flexibility and superior kink resistance over a period of time.
