Recent Advances in the Development of Hyundai · Kia's Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles

Wide attention to fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) comes from two huge issues currently the world is facing with: the concern of the petroleum reserves depletion due to consequent oil dependence and the earth global warming due in some extent to vehicle emissions. In this background, Hyundai, along with its sister company Kia, has been building the FCEVs and operating their test fleet with several tens of units at home and abroad. Since 2004, 32 passenger vehicles have been offered for the Department of Energy's controlled hydrogen fleet and infrastructure demonstration and validation project in the U.S. In the meantime, from 2006, 30 passenger vehicles as well as four buses, featuring the in-house developed fuel cell stack and its associated components, are currently under the domestic operation for the FCEV learning demonstration led by the Ministry of Knowledge and Economy.

Multi-Point Mesh Modeling and Nonlinear Multi-Body Dynamics of Hypoid Geared System

A multi-point hypoid gear mesh model based on 3-dimensional loaded tooth contact analysis is incorporated into a coupled multi-body dynamic and vibration hypoid gear model to predict more detailed dynamic behavior of each tooth pair. To validate the accuracy of the proposed model, the time-averaged mesh parameters are applied to linear time-invariant (LTI) analysis and the dynamic responses, such as dynamic mesh force, dynamic transmission error, are computed, which demonstrates good agreement with that predicted by single-point mesh model. Furthermore, a nonlinear time-varying (NLTV) dynamic analysis is performed considering the effect of backlash nonlinearity and time-varying mesh parameters, such as mesh stiffness, transmission error, mesh point and line-of-action. Simulation results show that the time history of the mesh parameters and dynamic mesh force for each pair of teeth within a full engagement cycle can be simulated.

Development of the Active Sound Generation Technology Using Motor Driven Power Steering System

As the original engine sound is usually not enough to satisfy the driver’s desire for a sporty and fascinating sound, Active Noise Control (ANC) and Active Sound Design (ASD) have been great technologies in automobiles for a long time. However, these technologies which enhance the sound of vehicles using loud speakers or electromagnetic actuators etc. lead to the increase of cost and weight due to the use of external amplifiers or actuators. This paper presents a new technology for generating a target sound by the active control of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) of a mass-production steering system. The existing steering hardware or motor is not changed, but only additional software is added. Firstly, an algorithm of this technology, called Active Sound Generation (ASG), is introduced which is compiled and included in the ECU target code. Then the high frequency noise issue and its countermeasures are presented.

Interaction of Gear-Shaft Dynamics Considering Gyroscopic Effect of Compliant Driveline System

Due to the design of lightweight, high speed driveline system, the coupled bending and torsional vibration and rotordynamics must be considered to predict vibratory responses more realistically. In the current analysis, a lumped parameter model of the propeller shaft is developed with Timoshenko beam elements, which includes the effect of rotary inertia and shear deformation. The propeller shaft model is then coupled with a hypoid gear pair representation using the component mode synthesis approach. In the proposed formulation, the gyroscopic effect of both the gear and propeller shaft is considered. The simulation results show that the interaction between gear gyroscopic effect and propeller shaft bending flexibility has considerable influence on the gear dynamic mesh responses around bending resonances, whereas the torsional modes still dominate in the overall frequency spectrum.

Fast Active Sound Tuning System for Vehicle Powertrain Response

This paper describes an active sound tuning (AST) system for vehicle powertrain response. Instead of simply aiming to attenuate cabin interior noise, AST system is capable of reshaping the powertrain response based on predetermined vehicle sound quality criteria. However, conventional AST systems cannot yield a balanced result over the broad frequency range when applied to powertrain noise. It is due to the fact that existing systems are typically configured with the filtered-x least mean square (FXLMS) algorithm or its modified versions, which has inherent frequency dependent convergence behavior due to large dynamic range of secondary path (the electro-acoustic path from the control speaker to the error microphone). Therefore, fast convergence can only be reached at the resonant frequencies.

Modified FxLMS Algorithm with Equalized Convergence Speed for Active Control of Powertrain Noise

Current powertrain active noise control (ANC) systems are not sufficient enough to track the fast engine speed variations, and yield consistent convergence speeds for individual engine order such that a balanced noise reduction performance can be achieved over a broad frequency range. This is because most of these ANC systems are configured with the standard filtered-x least mean squares (FxLMS) algorithm, which has an inherent limitation in the frequency-dependent convergence behavior due to the existence of secondary path model (electro-acoustic path from the input of control loudspeaker to the output of monitoring error microphone) in the reference signal path. In this paper, an overview is given first to compare several recently modified FxLMS algorithms to improve the convergence speed for harmonic responses such as eigenvalue equalization FxLMS (EE-FXLMS) and normalized reference LMS (NX-LMS) algorithms.

Comparative Study of Adaptive Algorithms for Vehicle Powertrain Noise Control

Active noise control systems have been gaining popularity in the last couple of decades, due to the deficiencies in passive noise abatement techniques. In the future, a novel combination of passive and active noise control techniques may be applied more widely, to better control the interior sound quality of vehicles. In order to maximize the effectiveness of this combined approach, smarter algorithms will be needed for active noise control systems. These algorithms will have to be computationally efficient, with high stability and convergence rates. This will be necessary in order to accurately predict and control the interior noise response of a vehicle. In this study, a critical review of the filtered-x least mean square (FXLMS) algorithm and several other newly proposed algorithms for the active control of vehicle powertrain noise, is performed. The analysis examines the salient features of each algorithm, and compares their system performance.

Collision Probability Field for Motion Prediction of Surrounding Vehicles Using Sensing Uncertainty

Intelligent driving assistant systems have been studied meticulously for autonomous driving. When the systems have the responsibility for driving itself, such as in an autonomous driving system, it should be aware of its’ surroundings including moving vehicles and must be able to evaluate collision risk for the ego vehicle's planned motion. However, when recognizing surrounding vehicles using a sensor, the measured information has uncertainty because of many reasons, such as noise and resolution. Many previous studies evaluated the collision risk based on the probabilistic theorem which the noise is modeled as a probability density function. However, the previous probabilistic solutions could not assess the collision risk and predict the motion of surrounding vehicles at the same time even though the motion is possible to be changed by the estimated collision risk.

Numerical Parametric Study of a Six-Stroke Gasoline Compression Ignition (GCI) Engine Combustion- Part II

In order to extend the operability limit of the gasoline compression ignition (GCI) engine, as an avenue for low temperature combustion (LTC) regime, the effects of parametric variations of engine operating conditions on the performance of six-stroke GCI (6S-GCI) engine cycle are numerically investigated, using an in-house 3D CFD code coupled with high-fidelity physical sub-models along with the Chemkin library. The combustion and emissions were calculated using a skeletal chemical kinetics mechanism for a 14-component gasoline surrogate fuel. Authors’ previous study highlighted the effects of the variation of injection timing and split ratio on the overall performance of 6S-GCI engine and the unique mixing-controlled burning mode of the charge mixtures during the two additional strokes. As a continuing effort, the present study details the parametric studies of initial gas temperature, boost pressure, fuel injection pressure, compression ratio, and EGR ratio.

A Study on North American Customer Preference to Interior Noise using Sound Balance Analysis

A new approach to achieve better customer perception of overall vehicle quietness is the sound balance improvement of vehicle interior sound during driving. Interior sound is classified into 3 primary sound source shares such as engine sound relative to revolution speed, tire road noise and wind noise relative to vehicle speed. Each interior sound shares are classified using the synchronous time-domain averaging method. The sound related to revolution order of engine and auxiliaries is considered as engine sound share, tire road noise and wind noise shares are extracted by multiple coherent output power analysis. Sound balance analysis focuses on improving the relative difference in interior sound share level between the 3 primary sound sources. Virtual sound simulator which is able to represent various driving conditions and able to adjust imaginary sound share is built for several vehicles in same compact segment.

Coupled Multi-Body Dynamic and Vibration Analysis of High-Speed Hypoid Geared Rotor System

High speed, precision geared rotor systems are often plagued by excessive vibration and noise problems. The response that is primarily excited by gear transmission error is actually coupled to the large displacement rotational motion of the driveline system. Classical pure vibration model assumes that the system oscillates about its mean position without coupling to the large displacement motion. To improve on this approach and understanding of the influences of the dynamic coupling, a coupled multi-body dynamic and vibration simulation model is proposed. Even though the focus is on hypoid geared rotor system, the model is more general since hypoid and bevel gears have more complicated geometry and time and spatial-varying characteristics compared to parallel axis gears.

Active Vibration Control to Suppress Gear Mesh Response

This paper discusses an enhanced active vibration control concept to suppress the dynamic response associated with gear mesh frequencies. In active control application, the control of dynamic gear mesh tonal response is essentially the rejection or suppression of periodical disturbance. Our active control experimental work shows that the existence of un-controlled harmonic result in the increase at these harmonics when applying direct control to the target mesh frequencies. To address this problem, the effect of the existence of un-correlated harmonic components in error signal when applying active control to suppress the target gear mesh harmonics is examined. The proposed adaptive controller that is designed specifically for tackling gear mesh frequency vibrations is based on an enhanced filtered-x least mean square algorithm (FXLMS) with frequency estimation to synthesize the required reference signal.

Design and Structural Analysis of Bumper for Automobiles

An investigation has been performed to study the response of the front bumper beam of automobiles subjected to an external impact load. In the investigation, an aluminum shell structure is modeled as a beam, and the energy absorber of polyurethane is also modeled as statically equivalent springs attached to the beam. Castigliano's second theorem and principles of energy and momentum are then used to calculate the reaction forces and maximum deflection. Stress distribution is then calculated using the beam theory. The primary concern of the investigation is to present a procedure of how to design optimally the cross-sectional shape of the front bumper of automobiles.

Application of Analytic Wavelet Transform to Transient Signal Analyses

The analytic wavelet transform (AWT) is a wavelet transform that works much like a transient Fourier transform. Therefore the AWT enables utilizing advantages of both the wavelet transform and Fourier transform. A special form of AWT developed for transient vibration and acoustics signal analyses is applied to various engineering signals in this paper. Application examples include a general time-frequency (T-F) analysis, analysis of exposures to impulsive vibrations and noises, and estimation of reverberation times. Some new definitions such as the T-F noise reduction and frequency weighted time history are defined by taking the advantage of unique capabilities of the AWT. Possible automotive applications of these new concepts are briefly discussed.

Real-Time Powertrain Control Strategy for Series-Parallel Hybrid Electric Vehicles

The series-parallel hybrid electric vehicle(HEV), which employs a planetary gear set to combine one internal combustion engine(ICE) and two electric motors(EMs), can take advantages of both series and parallel hybrid system. The efficient powertrain operating point of the system can be obtained by the instantaneous optimization of equivalent fuel consumption. However, heavy computational requirements and variable constraints of the optimization process make it difficult to build real-time control strategy. To overcome the difficulty, this study suggests the control strategy which divides the optimization process into 2 stages. In the first stage, a target of charge/discharge power is determined based on equivalent fuel consumption, then in the second stage, an engine operating point is determined taking power transfer efficiency into account.

Acoustically absorptive liners are used in the inlet and exhaust ducts of commercial aircraft engines. A double layer acoustic liner consists of a porous face sheet, a porous septum, an impervious back sheet, and a honeycomb structure. The Acousti-Cap™ technology, developed by Hexcel Corporation, is a significant innovation in the manufacture of double layer acoustic liners. It consists of a non-metallic permeable cap material embedded into each cell of the honeycomb core to create an acoustic septum. This paper presents details of the extensive acoustic testing and analysis carried out to support the development of acoustic liners with embedded mesh-caps.

Vehicle Mass Estimator for Adaptive Roll Stability Control

Rollover is one of the significant life threatening factors in SUVs (Sports Utility Vehicles). By applying braking or steering, active roll stability controllers help prevent rollover accidents in SUVs. The performance of these controllers is very sensitive to vehicle inertial parameters such as vehicle mass and mass center height. In this paper, a unified estimation method for vehicle mass is proposed considering available driving conditions, where three estimation algorithms are developed based on longitudinal, lateral or vertical vehicle dynamics, respectively. The first algorithm is designed using the longitudinal vehicle dynamics and the recursive least square with the disturbance observer technique for longitudinal traveling case. The second algorithm is designed using the lateral vehicle dynamics where the lateral velocity is estimated with the kinematic vehicle model via the Kalman filter.

Design of the Occupant Protection System for Frontal Impact Using the Axiomatic Approach

The functional requirements (FRs) and design equation of a flexible system change in a continuous manner with respect to a variable such as time. An event driven flexible system is defined as a subcategory of the flexible system in that it changes in a discrete space. A design scenario is developed for the event driven systems. The design equation for each event should be defined by using the axiomatic approach and the design equations are assembled to form a full design equation. The design equation for each event can be established by sensitivity analysis. In conceptual design, the design order is determined based on the full design equation. Design parameters (DPs) are found to satisfy FRs in sequence. A design parameter may consist of multiple design variables. In detailed design, the design variables are determined. The occupant protection system is an event driven flexible system because the design matrix and its elements change according to the impact speed.

Model Based Optimization of Supervisory Control Parameters for Hybrid Electric Vehicles

Supervisory control strategy of a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) provides target powers and operating points of an internal combustion engine and an electric motor. To promise efficient driving of the HEV, it is needed to find the proper values of control parameters which are used in the strategy. However, it is very difficult to find the optimal values of the parameters by doing experimental tests, since there are plural parameters which have dependent relationship between each other. Furthermore variation of the test results makes it difficult to extract the effect of a specific parameter change. In this study, a model based parameter optimization method is introduced. A vehicle simulation model having the most of dynamics related to fuel consumption was developed and validated with various experimental data from real vehicles. And then, the supervisory control logic including the control parameters was connected to the vehicle model.

Air conditioning is defined as the process of treating air so as to control simultaneously its temperature, humidity, cleanliness and distribution to meet the requirements of the conditioned space. As in the definition, the important actions involved in the operation of an air conditioning system are temperature and humidity control, air purification and movement. For these conditions this paper proposes a Automatic Climate Control(ACC) system of the bus. The system has cooling, heating, and dehumidifying modes, and is governed by dual 8-bit microprocessors. These modes are broken down into sub-modules dealing with control of the compressor, blower speed, damper position, air purifier, ventilators, preheater, air mixing damper and so on.
