Tire Side Force Characteristics with the Coupling Effect of Vertical Load and Inflation Pressure

Abstract The tire vertical load and inflation pressure have great influence on tire steady- and non-steady-state characteristics and, consequently, on the vehicle handling and stability. The objective of this article is to reveal the coupling effect of tire vertical load and inflation pressure on tire characteristics and then introduce an improved UniTire side force model including such coupling effect through experimental and theoretical analysis. First, the influence of the tire vertical load and inflation pressure on the tire characteristics is presented through experimental analysis. Second, the theoretical tire cornering stiffness and lateral relaxation length model are introduced to study the underlying mechanism of the coupling effect. Then, an improved UniTire side force model including the coupling effect of tire vertical load and inflation pressure is derived. Finally, the proposed improved UniTire side force model is validated through tire steady-state and transient data.

Influence of Intelligent Active Suspension System Controller Design Techniques on Vehicle Braking Characteristics

Abstract This article presents a comprehensive investigation for the interaction between vehicle ride vibration control and braking control using two degrees of freedom (2DOF) quarter vehicle model. A typical limited bandwidth active suspension system with nonlinear spring and damping characteristics of practical hydraulic and pneumatic components is controlled to regulate both suspension and tire forces and therefore provide the optimum ride comfort and braking performance of an anti-lock brake system (ABS). In order to design a suitable controller for this nonlinear integrated system, various control techniques are followed including state feedback tuned using Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR), state feedback tuned using Genetic Algorithm (GA), Proportional Integrated (PI) tuned genetically, and Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC). The ABS control system is designed to limit skid ratio below threshold of 15%.

Integrated Driving and Braking Control Unit for Electric Bikes

Abstract In this research, an integrated driving and braking control unit was developed for electric bikes. The unit integrates the driving and braking circuits in a module. Alternate commutation was used to design the driving and braking unit of a customized brushless direct-current hub motor (BLDCHM). The braking torque for the braking section is generated through alternating the duty cycle of the pulse-width-modulated (PWM) commands of the switching elements and phase sequence arrangement of the current conduction loops. The current conduction loops in the motor and switching elements is arranged to adjust the braking torque in a sophisticated way. The integrated design has been successfully tested in a commercialized electric bike with a BLDCHM.

Uncertainty Analysis of High-Frequency Noise in Battery Electric Vehicle Based on Interval Model

Abstract The high-frequency noise issue is one of the most significant noise, vibration, and harshness problems, particularly in battery electric vehicles (BEVs). The sound package treatment is one of the most important approaches toward solving this problem. Owing to the limitations imposed by manufacturing error, assembly error, and the operating conditions, there is often a big difference between the actual values and the design values of the sound package components. Therefore, the sound package parameters include greater uncertainties. In this article, an uncertainty analysis method for BEV interior noise was developed based on an interval model to investigate the effect of sound package uncertainty on the interior noise of a BEV. An interval perturbation method was formulated to compute the uncertainty of the BEV’s interior noise.

A Review on Physical Mechanisms of Tire-Pavement Interaction Noise

Abstract Tire-pavement interaction noise (TPIN) dominates for passenger cars above 40 km/h and trucks above 70 km/h. Numerous studies have attempted to uncover and distinguish the basic mechanisms of TPIN. However, intense debate is still ongoing about the validity of these mechanisms. In this work, the physical mechanisms proposed in the literature were reviewed and divided into three categories: generation mechanisms, amplification mechanisms, and attenuation mechanisms. The purpose of this article is to gather the published general opinions for further open discussions.

Study of Riding Assist Control Enabling Self-Standing in Stationary State

Abstract In motorcycles, when they are traveling at medium to high speed, the roll stability is usually maintained by the restoration force generated by self-steering effect. However, when the vehicle is stationary or traveling in low speed, sufficient restoring force does not occur because some of the forces, such as centrifugal force, become small. In our study, we aimed at prototyping a motorcycle having a roll stability realized by a steering control when the vehicle is stationary or traveling in low speed. When we considered a mathematical control model to be applied, general models of four-degree-of-freedom had a critical inconvenience that the formulae include nonlinear second derivatives making them excessively complicated for deriving a practically applicable control method. Accordingly, we originally constructed a new control model which has equivalent two point masses (upper and lower from the vehicle’s center of gravity).

A Robust Wheel Slip Control Design with Radius Dynamics Observer for EV

Abstract In order to improve the safety and dynamic performance of electric vehicles equipped with four in-wheel electric motors, and prevent the wheels from locking or slipping when braking or accelerating, a new longitudinal control strategy which combines ASR traction and ABS braking control is proposed using an observation algorithm of effective radius for four wheel of electric vehicle. Using the electric motor torques as the unique actuator signal sources, this combined ASR/ABS can act as acceleration slip regulation (ASR) by preventing the wheels from slipping during acceleration and as an antilock braking system (ABS) by preventing the wheels from getting locked during braking. A variation of effective radius of the wheel’s tire can have an incidence on the longitudinal and lateral control.

Active Suspension: Future Lessons from The Past

Abstract Active suspension was a topic of great research interest near the end of last century. Ultimately broad bandwidth active systems were found to be too expensive in terms of both energy and financial cost. This past work, developing the ultimate vehicle suspension, has relevance for today’s vehicle designers working on more efficient and effective suspension systems for practical vehicles. From a control theorist’s perspective, it provides an interesting case study in the use of “practical” knowledge to allow “better” performance than predicted by theoretically optimal linear controllers. A brief history of active suspension will be introduced. Peter Wright, David Williams, and others at Lotus developed their Lotus modal control concept. In a parallel effort, Dean Karnopp presented the notion of inertial (Skyhook) damping. These concepts will be compared, the combination of these two distinctly different efforts will be discussed, and eventual vehicle results presented.

Study of the Sliding Door Shaking Problem and Optimization Based on the Application of Euler’s Spiral

Abstract This study focuses on the sudden shaking phenomenon of a sliding door passing through a corner. This phenomenon requires attention because shaking during movement can lead to a harsh operation feeling and a short service life. An experiment based on a test setup was conducted, and the sudden change in the acceleration of a sliding door panel was measured. Based on multi-body dynamics (MBD) analysis and a rigid-flexible coupled model of the sliding door system, the cause of the sudden shaking was determined to be the discontinuous curvature of the middle rail trajectory. A transition curve was proposed as the solution for the discontinuous curvature, and Euler’s spiral was applied in the redesign of the middle rail trajectory. Verified by simulations, the results exhibit considerable improvement in sliding door movement stability, with large reductions in the maximum center of mass (CM) acceleration and guide roller impact force.

Design of Adjustable Road Feeling Performance for Steering-by-Wire System

Abstract Since steering-by-wire (SBW) system decouples mechanical linkages between front tires and the steering wheel, the road feeling characteristics of SBW system can be designed flexibly to improve the driving experience. In this article, a road feeling system with adjustable performance is proposed based on integrating the elements of the steering wheel module and the steering actuator module of SBW system. In this system, the road feeling torque consists of a main toque and a tuning torque, which are deduced by parametric method. The main torque is to feed back the tire dynamics and road properties to the driver intuitively, and the tuning torque is designed as a compensation of the main torque to tune the road feeling performance. The parameters in the formula of road feeling torque are selected properly and the driver can get the preferred road feeling performance by tuning these parameters in the formula.

Structural Optimization Techniques to Design Light Weight and Low Radiated Noise Components

Abstract Structural optimization evolved as a preferred technique across industries to develop lightweight products. One of the widely studied topics in structural optimization is to develop methods that reduce the radiated noise from a structure, where responses like Equivalent Radiated Power (ERP) and natural frequencies used to indirectly address the noise levels. This article compares freeform optimization with topology optimization technique and investigates their effectiveness for reducing radiated noise and weight. To illustrate the same, Finite Element Method (FEM) and Boundary Element Method (BEM) analysis are performed on a sheet metal flat plate (panel) as an example and correlated the same with experimental data. Further, different optimization problem formulations have been explored on those examples and results have been compared.

Optimization Control for 4WIS Electric Vehicle Based on the Coincidence Degree of Wheel Steering Centers

Abstract The steering centers of four wheels for passenger car do not coincide, which may result in tire wear and the unharmoniously movement of the vehicle. In this article, an optimization control method for Four Wheel Independent Steering (4WIS) electric vehicle based on the coincidence degree of steering centers is proposed, to improve the driving performance. The nonlinear vehicle model of the four-wheel independent steering vehicle is established, and the formula of the wheel steering center is derived. The coincidence degree of wheel steering centers is defined as the evaluation index, to describe and evaluate the performance of the coordination for wheels’ movement. Meanwhile, the structure design of 4WIS system and the establishment of Direct-Current (DC) steering motor model are carried out, and the Model Predictive Control (MPC) controller for steering actuator is designed.

Feature-Based Response Classification in Nonlinear Structural Design Simulations

Abstract An applied system design analysis approach for automated processing and classification of simulated structural responses is presented. Deterministic and nonlinear dynamics are studied under ideal loading and low noise conditions to determine fundamental system properties, how they vary and possibly interact. Using powerful computer resources, large amounts of simulated raw data can be produced in a short period of time. Efficient tools for data processing and interpretation are then needed, but existing ones often require much manual preparation and direct human judgement. Thus, there is a need to develop techniques that help to treat more virtual prototype variants and efficiently extract useful information from them. For this, time signals are evaluated by methods commonly used within structural dynamics and statistical learning. A multi-level multi-frequency stimulus function is constructed and simulated response signals are combined into frequency domain functions.

A Centrally Managed Identity-Anonymized CAN Communication System*

Abstract Identity-Anonymized CAN (IA-CAN) protocol is a secure CAN protocol, which provides the sender authentication by inserting a secret sequence of anonymous IDs (A-IDs) shared among the communication nodes. To prevent malicious attacks from the IA-CAN protocol, a secure and robust system error recovery mechanism is required. This article presents a central management method of IA-CAN, named the IA-CAN with a global A-ID, where a gateway plays a central role in the session initiation and system error recovery. Each ECU self-diagnoses the system errors, and (if an error happens) it automatically resynchronizes its A-ID generation by acquiring the recovery information from the gateway. We prototype both a hardware version of an IA-CAN controller and a system for the IA-CAN with a global A-ID using the controller to verify our concept.

Anomaly-Based Intrusion Detection Using the Density Estimation of Reception Cycle Periods for In-Vehicle Networks

Abstract The automotive industry intends to create new services that involve sharing vehicle control information via a wide area network. In modern vehicles, an in-vehicle network shares information between more than 70 electronic control units (ECUs) inside a vehicle while it is driven. However, such a complicated system configuration can result in security vulnerabilities. The possibility of cyber-attacks on vehicles via external services has been demonstrated in many research projects. As advances in vehicle systems (e.g., autonomous drive) progress, the number of vulnerabilities to be exploited by cyber-attacks will also increase. Therefore, future vehicles need security measures to detect unknown cyber-attacks. We propose anomaly-based intrusion detection to detect unknown cyber-attacks for the Control Area Network (CAN) protocol, which is popular as a communication protocol for in-vehicle networks.

Abstract “It cannot happen to us” is one of many common myths regarding cybersecurity in the transportation industry. The traditional view that the threats to transportation are low probability and low impact keep agencies from mitigating security threats to transportation critical infrastructure. Current transportation systems depend on closed proprietary systems, which are enhanced by connected cyber-physical systems. Variable Message Signs (VMS) deliver advisory information to road users to ensure safe and efficient trips. Since the first VMS physical hacking more than a decade ago, the importance of VMS security has been a pressing one. VMS hacks can include physical and remote breaches due to the weak protection of the signs and cyber-physical systems.

Brake Squeal Prevention through Suspension Design and Adaptive Suspension

Abstract The brake squeal phenomenon has bothered automobile manufacturers for a long time. Although having no ill effects on the braking performance, the squeaky noise is often a nuisance and one of the major complaints of many customers. In order to design quality and noise-free automobiles, the brake squeal issue has to be permanently tackled. Controlling brake squeal by the addition of damping on the disk and shape optimization has been suggested by many researchers. Other methods proposed in the literature include the use of a different brake pad material or an anti-squeal paste. However, the effect of the type of brake pad suspension on brake squeal has not been studied. In this article, we demonstrate that the use of a 4-element viscoelastic support can help prevent brake squeal for the practical vehicle speed range. For a 2-element support, we have identified a suitable control parameter and proposed an efficient active control for squeal prevention based on that.

An Optical-Based Technique to Obtain Vibration Characteristics of Rotating Tires

Abstract The dynamic characteristics of tires are critical in the overall vibrations of vehicles because the tire-road interface is the only medium of energy transfer between the vehicle and the road surface. Obtaining the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the tire helps in improving the comfort of the passengers. The vibrational characteristics of structures are usually obtained by performing conventional impact hammer modal testing, in which the structure is excited with an impact hammer and the response of the structure under excitation is captured using accelerometers. However, this approach only provides the response of the structure at a few discrete locations, and it is challenging to use this procedure for rotating structures. Digital Image Correlation (DIC) helps in overcoming these challenges by providing the full-field response of the structure.

Nonlinear Iterative Optimization Process for Multichannel Remote Parameter Control

Abstract In this article, compared with traditional Remote Parameter Control (RPC), the iterative process is improved based on linear transfer function (TF) estimation of the nonlinear dynamic system. In the improved RPC, the iteration coefficient is designed according to the convergence condition of the nonlinear iterative process, so that the convergence level, convergence speed, and iteration stability could be improved. The difference between the traditional and the improved RPC iterative process is discussed, the RPC iterative process of the nonlinear system is analyzed, and channel decoupling for Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) system based on eigen-decomposition of the system TF and linear TF estimation is introduced. It assumes that the eigenvector matrix of the system TF remains the same, and the linear TF in the iterative process is estimated and updated, which is used for iterative calculation.

Application of Optimal Control Method to Path Tracking Problem of Vehicle

Abstract Path tracking is an essential stage for vehicle safety control. It is more newsworthy than ever in the automotive context and especially for autonomous vehicle. The study proposes an optimal control method for path tracking problem in inverse vehicle handling dynamics. The proposed method generates an expected trajectory which guarantees minimum clearance to the prescribed path by identifying the optimal steering torque input. Based on this purpose, the path tracking problem, which is treated as an optimal control problem, is then solved by local collocation method and mesh refinement. Finally, a real vehicle test is executed to verify the rationality of the proposed model and methodology. The results show that using control variables as a mesh refinement function can capture the dramatic changes in state variables, and the efficiency improvement is more significant as the number of the grid points increases.
