A Model-Based Configuration Approach for Automotive Real-Time Operating Systems

Automotive embedded systems have become very complex, are strongly integrated, and the safety-criticality and real-time constraints of these systems raise new challenges. The OSEK/VDX standard provides an open-ended architecture for distributed real-time capable units in vehicles. This is supported by the OSEK Implementation Language (OIL), a language aiming at specifying the configuration of these real-time operating systems. The challenge, however, is to ensure consistency of the concept constraints and configurations along the entire product development. The contribution of this paper is to bridge the existing gap between model-driven systems engineering and software engineering for automotive real-time operating systems (RTOS). For this purpose a bidirectional tool bridge has been established based on OSEK OIL exchange format files.

A Novel Seamless 2-Speed Transmission System for Electric Vehicles: Principles and Simulation Results

This article deals with a novel 2-speed transmission system specifically designed for electric axle applications. The design of this transmission permits seamless gearshifts and is characterized by a simple mechanical layout. The equations governing the overall system dynamics are presented in the paper. The principles of the control system for the seamless gearshifts achievable by the novel transmission prototype - currently under experimental testing at the University of Surrey and on a prototype vehicle - are analytically demonstrated and detailed through advanced simulation tools. The simulation results and sensitivity analyses for the main parameters affecting the overall system dynamics are presented and discussed.

Selection of the Optimal Gearbox Layout for an Electric Vehicle

The paper describes the advantages due to the adoption of multi-speed transmission systems within fully electric vehicles. In particular, the article compares a conventional single-speed transmission layout, a 2-speed layout based on a novel gearbox architecture capable of seamless gearshifts, and a Continuously Variable Transmission layout. The selection of the optimal gear ratios for the 2-speed system has been based on an optimization procedure, taking into account the efficiency characteristics of the components of the whole vehicle powertrain. The control system for the Continuously Variable Transmission system has been designed with the aim of maximizing the efficiency of the operating points of the electric motor.

The automotive domain has seen safety engineering at the forefront of the industry’s priorities for the last decade. Therefore, additional safety engineering efforts, design approaches, and well-established safety processes have been stipulated. Today many connected and automated vehicles are available and connectivity features and information sharing are increasingly used. This increases the attractiveness of an attack on vehicles and thus introduces new risks for vehicle cybersecurity. Thus, just as safety became a critical part of the development in the late 20th century, the automotive domain must now consider cybersecurity as an integral part of the development of modern vehicles. Aware of this fact, the automotive industry has, therefore, recently taken multiple efforts in designing and producing safe and secure connected and automated vehicles.

Vehicle Dynamics Simulation to Develop an Active Roll Control System

Active Roll Control (ARC) is one of the most promising active systems to improve vehicle comfort and handling. This paper describes the simulation based procedure adopted to conceive a double-channel Active Roll Control system, characterized by the hydraulic actuation of the stabilizer bars of a sedan. The first part of the paper presents the vehicle model adopted for this activity. It is Base Model Simulator (BMS), the 14 Degrees-of-Freedom vehicle model by Politecnico di Torino. It was validated through road tests. Then the paper describes the development of the control algorithm adopted to improve the roll dynamics of the vehicle. The implemented control algorithm is characterized by a first subsystem, capable of obtaining the desired values of body roll angle as a function of lateral acceleration during semi-stationary maneuvers.

A Cross Domain Co-Simulation Platform for the Efficient Analysis of Mechatronic Systems

Efficient integration of mechanics and microelectronics components is nowadays a must within the automotive industry in order to minimize integration risks and support optimization of the entire system. We propose in this work a cross domain co-simulation platform for the efficient analysis of mechatronic systems. The interfacing of two state-of-the-art simulation platforms provides a direct link between the two domains at an early development stage, thus enabling the validation and optimization of the system already during modeling phase. The proposed cross-domain co-simulation is used within our TEODACS project for the analysis of the FlexRay technology. We illustrate using a drive-by-wire use case how the different architecture choices may influence the system.

A Failsafe Strategy for a Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) System

The paper presents a failsafe strategy conceived for a Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) system developed by the Vehicle Dynamics Research Team of Politecnico di Torino. The main equations used by the failsafe algorithm are presented, especially those devoted to estimate steering wheel angle, body yaw rate and lateral acceleration, each of them fundamental to correctly actuate the VDC. The estimation is based on redundancy; each formula is considered according to a weight depending on the kind of maneuver. A new recovery algorithm is presented, which does not deactivate VDC after a sensor fault, but substitutes the sensor signal with the virtually estimated value. The results obtained through simulation are satisfactory. First experimental tests carried out on a ABS/VDC test bench of the Vehicle Dynamics Research Team of Politecnico di Torino confirmed the simulation results.

Electro-Hydraulic Braking System Modelling and Simulation

The first step toward a braking system ‘by wire’ is Electro-Hydraulic Braking System (EHB). The paper describes a method to evaluate through virtual experimentation the actual improvement in vehicle behaviour, from the point of view of both handling and comfort, including also pedal feeling, due to EHB. The first step consisted in modelling the hydraulic unit, comprehensive of sensors. Then it was conceived a control logic devoted to medium-low intensity braking manoeuvres, without ABS intervention, to determine an optimal braking force distribution and pedal feeling depending on the manoeuvre. A failsafe strategy, complete of on board diagnosis, to prevent dangerous system behaviour in the eventuality of a component failure was carried out and tested. Finally, EHB wheel pressure sensors were used to improve both ABS performance, increasing the adherence estimation, and Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) performance, through a more precise actuation.

Active Roll Control to Increase Handling and Comfort

The paper deals with the elaboration of an Active Roll Control (ARC) oriented both on comfort and handling improvement. The ARC determines hydraulically the variation of the equivalent stiffness of the anti-roll bars. The control strategies conceived were extensively validated through road tests managed on an Alfa Romeo sedan. The first part of the paper deals with comfort improvement, mainly consisting in an absence of bar effect during straight-ahead travel and in a modification of the roll characteristic of the car. To increase driver's handling feeling, it was necessary to optimise the ratio between front and rear roll stiffness. This purpose can be reached through control strategies based exclusively on lateral acceleration. Some control strategy corrections were necessary to optimise roll damping and front/rear roll stiffness balancing.

Automotive electronics are complex distributed embedded systems. The tight interconnection of the different functionalities (e.g. ABS, ESP) makes the network resource the backbone of the system. Time-triggered architectures and time-triggered communication systems such as FlexRay have been introduced in this context to support the development and integration of safety-relevant systems. An important enhancement to this approach is online monitoring and transparent diagnosis to ensure better assessment of the system status (faster fault detection) during operation. This is required for preventive maintenance in order to improve system availability. We propose a non-intrusive two steps method for the analysis of the communication architecture. In the first step, the system behavior is monitored at different abstraction levels by a dedicated tester node. The paper deals with the methodology implemented by Magneti Marelli and Politecnico di Torino Vehicle Dynamics Research group to develop and verify the software of active chassis and powertrain control systems through a Hardware-In-the-Loop automated procedure. It is a general procedure which can be adopted for all the active chassis control systems, not only for their development but also for the verification of their reliability. The steps of the procedure are described in the first part of the paper. The specific application on which this paper is focused concerns robotized gearboxes.

Base Model Simulator (BMS) - A Vehicle Dynamics Model to Evaluate Chassis Control Systems Performance

Chassis Control Systems development methodology is nowadays strongly based on analyzing performance by using PC vehicle dynamics simulation. Generally, the overall design, test bench and road validation process is continuously accompanied by simulation. The Base Model Simulator was developed by the Vehicle Dynamics Group at the Department of Mechanics of Politecnico di Torino both to satisfy this requirement and for educational purposes. It considers a complete vehicle dynamics mathematical model, including driver, powertrain, driveline, vehicle body, suspensions, steering system, brakes, tires. The Base Model Simulator takes in account the suspensions system elastokinematics, including, for example, automatic computation of camber variation during the vehicle roll motions. Tire model considered are either Pacejka's models or experimental data.

Shock Absorber Thermal Model: Basic Principles and Experimental Validation

The paper deals with the shock absorber model conceived by the author. It is implemented on the basis of an existing shock absorber model already presented by the same author [1]. The enhanced model permits a first approximation estimation of the average temperature of the different components of a monotube or a twin tube shock absorber. The fluid dynamic input data for the model, expressed in terms of pressure drops vs. flow rates, can be parameterized as a function of the estimated temperatures of the fluid through the considered orifice. The process required for the experimental data acquisition for the model is described, as well as the experimental validation of the model.

Increasing demands for safety, security, and certifiability of embedded automotive systems require additional development effort to generate the required evidences that the developed system can be trusted for the application and environment it is intended for. Safety standards such as ISO 26262 for road vehicles have been established to provide guidance during the development of safety-critical systems. The challenge in this context is to provide evidence of consistency, correctness, and completeness of system specifications over different work-products. One of these required work-products is the hardware-software interface (HSI) definition. This work-product is especially important since it defines the interfaces between different technologies. Model-based development (MBD) is a promising approach to support the description of the system under development in a more structured way, thus improving resulting consistency.

E-mobility is a game changer for the automotive domain. It promises significant reduction in terms of complexity and in terms of local emissions. With falling prices and recent technological advances, the second generation of electric vehicles (EVs) that is now in production makes electromobility an affordable and viable option for more and more transport mission (people, freight). Still, major challenges for large scale deployment remain. They include higher maturity with respect to performance (e.g., range, interaction with the grid), development efficiency (e.g., time-to-market), or production costs. Additionally, an important market transformation currently occurs with the co-development of automated driving functions, connectivity, mobility-as-a-service. New opportunities arise to customize road transportation systems toward application-driven, user-centric smart mobility solutions.

Integrated Safety and Security Development in the Automotive Domain

The replacement of safety-critical mechanical components with electro-mechanical systems has led to the fact that safety aspects play a central role in development of embedded automotive systems. Recently, consumer demands for connectivity (e.g., infotainment, car-2-car or car-2-infrastructure communication) as well as new advances toward advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) or even autonomous driving functions make cybersecurity another key factor to be taken into account by vehicle suppliers and manufacturers. Although these can capitalize on experiences from many other domains, they still have to face several unique challenges when gearing up for specific cybersecurity challenges. A key challenge is related to the increasing interconnection of automotive systems with networks (such as Car2X). Due to this connectivity, it is no longer acceptable to assume that safety-critical systems are immune to security risks.

Combining the Advantages of Simulation and Prototyping for the Validation of Dependable Communication Architectures: the TEODACS Approach

One main challenge during the validation of automotive communication architectures is to consider the assembled system and more especially the interactions between the different components. We propose in this work a test and validation infrastructure based on tightly coupled co-simulation and prototype platforms. The co-simulation framework, on one hand, enables the efficient simulation of the entire network and the accurate analysis of the communication at different abstraction layers. On the other hand, the prototype framework is required for the model calibration and for the system validation on a realistic environment. We discuss further how the interconnection of these two platforms supports the analysis of both single components and entire communication networks. Experimental results illustrate our approach.
X
