Benefits and Drawbacks of Compression Ratio Reduction in PCCI Combustion Application in an Advanced LD Diesel Engine

The present paper describes an experimental study on the effect of the compression ratio on the performance of a LD diesel engine operating with a PCCI calibration, near the estimated EURO 6/Tier2 Bin5 NOx emission limits. The research activity is the result of a collaborative project between Istituto Motori and Centro Ricerche Fiat aimed to carry out an exhaustive analysis of the compression ratio (CR) influence on the performance of a LD diesel engine. Starting from a reference engine configuration the CR was reduced in two steps sequentially. Each CR value was characterized under PCCI operation mode and, under conventional diesel operating mode, at maximum torque. The exploration of the PCCI application in the NEDC operating area was performed prefixing limits on maximum fuel consumption, maximum pressure rise and maximum tolerable smoke. The main result was that no significant increment in PCCI application area reducing the CR was possible without overcoming the limits.

Standardization of Graphics for Service Information and Translation Expense Reduction

The cost of human natural language translation of Service Information, Assembly Instructions, Training Materials, Operator Manuals and other similar documents is a major expense for manufacturers. One translation avoidance method involves replacing most of a document’s text with still and/or animated graphics. While the graphics with minimum text concept has savings potential, clarity of communication must be maintained for widespread application of this technique. The necessary clarity should be achieved if standards are established for the symbols and graphical conventions used. This paper provides an example of a repair procedure documented using the graphics with minimum text paradigm, describes many of the anticipated standards and provides an update on the progress towards achieving a standard development project.

Virtual Multi-Cylinder Engine Transient Test System

Researchers at the Powertrain Control Research Laboratory (PCRL) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison have developed a transient test system for single-cylinder engines that accurately replicates the dynamics of a multi-cylinder engine. The overall system can perform very rapid transients in excess of 10,000 rpm/second, and also replicates the rotational dynamics, intake gas dynamics, and heat transfer dynamics of a multi-cylinder engine. Testing results using this system accurately represent what would be found in the multi-cylinder engine counterpart. Therefore, engine developments can be refined to a much greater degree at lower cost, and these changes directly incorporated in the multi-cylinder engine with minimal modification. More importantly, various standardized emission tests such as the cold-start, FTP or ETC, can be run on this single-cylinder engine.

Heavy Duty Particle Measurement Programme (PMP): Exploratory Work for the Definition of the Test Protocol

The heavy duty Particle Measurement Programme (PMP) inter-laboratory exercise consists of three parts: 1) the exploratory work to refine the measurement protocol, 2) the validation exercise where each lab will measure the emissions of a “golden” engine with two “golden” particle number systems simultaneously sampling from full and partial flow dilution systems, and 3) the round-robin where the emissions of a “reference” engine will be determined with a lab’s own particle number instrumentation. This paper presents the results of the exploratory work and describes the final protocol for testing in the validation exercise (and round robin) along with the necessary facility modifications required for compliance with the protocol. Key aspects of the protocol (e.g. filter material, flow rates at the full and partial flow systems, the pre-conditioning etc.) are explained and justified.

Direct Injection of High Pressure Gas: Scaling Properties of Pulsed Turbulent Jets

Existing gasoline DI injection equipment has been modified to generate single hole pulsed gas jets. Injection experiments have been performed at combinations of 3 different pressure ratios (2 of which supercritical) respectively 3 different hole geometries (i.e. length to diameter ratios). Injection was into a pressure chamber with optical access. Injection pressures and injector hole geometry were selected to be representative of current and near-future DI natural gas engines. Each injector hole design has been characterized by measuring its discharge coefficient for different Re-levels. Transient jets produced by these injectors have been visualized using planar laser sheet Mie scattering (PLMS). For this the injected gas was seeded with small oil droplets. The corresponding flow field was measured using particle image velocimetry (PIV) laser diagnostics.

Data Fusion Strategies in Advanced Driver Assistance Systems

Data fusion plays a central role in more and more automotive applications, especially for driver assistance systems. On the one hand the process of data fusion combines data and information to estimate or predict states of observed objects. On the other hand data fusion introduces abstraction layers for data description and allows building more flexible and modular systems. The data fusion process can be divided into a low-level processing (tracking and object discrimination) and a high level processing (situation assessment). High level processing becomes more and more the focus of current research as different assistance applications will be combined into one comprehensive assistance system. Different levels/strategies for data fusion can be distinguished: Fusion on raw data level, fusion on feature level and fusion on decision level. All fusion strategies can be found in current driver assistance implementations.

Target Setting Principles and Methods in the Product Development Cycle

Vehicle target setting is an evolving process based on continually changing internal (management, standards) and external (competitive and legal) requirements. In addition to evolving requirements, the process for establishing and documenting targets may not be clear. The objective of this paper is to detail the overall process of target setting, the critical factors to consider, and key definitions for each stage of the process. It will describe the complete process from early competitive benchmarking to final verification testing. Setting targets for a vehicle requires definition and thorough benchmarking of the competition, an understanding of the key attributes used to describe the vehicles' performance, and a clearly defined set of requirements. These requirements will be regulatory, corporate and competitively based and grouped by clearly defined, customer perceived attributes which can be cascaded to specific vehicle systems.

Equivalent Accelerated Life Testing Plans and Application to Reliability Prediction

Accelerated life testing (ALT) is widely used to determine the failure time distribution of a product and the associated life-stress relationship in order to predict the product's reliability under normal operating conditions. Many types of stress loadings such as constant-stress, step-stress and cyclic-stress can be utilized when conducting ALT. Extensive research has been conducted on the analysis of ALT data obtained under a specified stress loading. However, the equivalency of ALT experiments involving different stress loadings has not been investigated. In this paper, a definition is provided for the equivalency of various ALT plans involving different stress loadings. Based on this definition, general equivalent ALT plans and some special types of equivalent ALT plans are explored. For demonstration, a constant-stress ALT and a ramp-stress ALT for miniature lamps are presented and their equivalency is investigated.

Increasing Power Density in HSDI Engines as an Approach for Engine Downsizing

In the context of CO₂ emission regulations and increase of energy prices, the downsizing of engine displacement is a widely discussed solution that allows a reduction of fuel consumption. However, high power density is required in order to maintain the power output and a good driveability. This study demonstrates the potential to strongly increase the specific power of High Speed Diesel Injection (HSDI) diesel engines. It includes the technological requirements to achieve high specific power and the optimal combination of engine settings to maximize specific power. The results are based on experimental work performed with a prototype single-cylinder engine (compression ratio of 14). Tests were conducted at full load, 4000 rpm. Part load requirements are also taken into account in the engine definition to be compatible with the targets of new emission standards.

The Evaluation of Mechanical Design and Comparison of Automotive Oil Filters

Approximately 500 million oil filters are sold in the United States of America each year, and are not required by law to meet any Government or industry testing procedures prior to being sold in the US market. The lack of required testing has resulted in no uniform testing procedure which in many cases leads to misleading claims by the manufacturer and/or inferior filtration designs and construction materials. Due to the lack of mandatory testing, the majority of oil filter manufacturers use in-house labs with different filtering methods to highlight the filter's unique strengths while not disclosing all relevant filtering data and in turn the filters inherent weaknesses. Instead of manufacturers offering full disclosure of the relevant performance specifications and internal design characteristics of the oil filter, they state that the specifications are proprietary information.

Optimization of Test Parameters and Analysis Methods for Fuel Tank Slosh Noise

As the interior sound levels in cabin compartments of passenger vehicles continue to get quieter, noises from various sources which previously were not objectionable can become an issue. One such source is the “slosh noise” from liquid movement within fuel tanks. Vehicle manufacturers, responding to the phenomena, have turned to their suppliers and worked with them to establish robust test and analysis methods to characterize the NVH performance of their fuel storage and delivery systems. Test facilities have recently made great advancements in the capability to measure and characterize “fuel slosh noise” in tanks. However, the industry today lacks standardized procedures to apply to the issue, including defining test parameters and analysis methods (both of which are complex because of the time-domain nature of slosh events).

Wavelet Analysis for Frequency Disturbance Characterization in an Electric Vehicle

Reduction of CO2 emission is a mandatory objective for every actor in the field of automotive transport, and electric vehicles (EV's) are increasingly becoming an effective option for both OEMs and customers. However, components development and vehicle integration for EV's present new challenges that must be faced and new issues which need to be solved. In particular electric motor control systems are developed to achieve the same comfort conditions as in conventional vehicles. IDIADA developed a prototype electric commercial vehicle in which both the motor and driveline were integrated. The electric motor output shaft delivers the torque to the transmission under a certain level of load variation and with torque irregularities that must be smoothed out in the transmission components. This paper studies the results of the testing of the prototype vehicle carried out to improve the overall NVH behavior of the powertrain.

Model-Based Real-Time Testing of Embedded Automotive Systems

The paper presents a model-based approach to testing embedded automotive software systems in a real-time. Model-based testing approach relates to a process of creating test artifacts using various kinds of models. Real-time testing involves the use of a real-time environment to implement test application. Engineers shall use real-time testing techniques to achieve greater reliability and/or determinism in a test system. The paper contains an instruction how to achieve these objectives by proper definition, implementation, execution, and evaluation of test cases. The test cases are defined and implemented in a modeling environment. The execution and evaluation of test results is made in a real-time machine. The paper is concluded with results obtained from the initial deployment of the approach on a large scale in production stream projects.

Prediction of Preceding Driver Behavior for Fuel Efficient Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control

Advanced driver assistance systems like cooperative adaptive cruise control (CACC) are designed to exploit information provided by vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and/or infrastructure-to-vehicle (I2V) communication systems to achieve desired objectives such as safety, traffic fluidity or fuel economy. In a day to day traffic scenario, the presence of unknown disturbances complicates achieving these objectives. In particular, CACC benefits in terms of fuel economy require the prediction of the behavior of a preceding vehicle during a finite time horizon. This paper suggests an estimation method based on actual and past inter-vehicle distance data as well as on traffic and upcoming traffic lights. This information is used to train a set of nonlinear, autoregressive (NARX) models. Two scenarios are investigated, one of them assumes a V2V communication with the predecessor, the other uses only data acquired by on-board vehicle sensors.

Development and Demonstration of LNT+SCR System for Passenger Car Diesel Applications

The regulations for mobile applications will become stricter in Euro 6 and further emission levels and require the use of active aftertreatment methods for NOX and particulate matter. SCR and LNT have been both used commercially for mobile NOX removal. An alternative system is based on the combination of these two technologies. Developments of catalysts and whole systems as well as final vehicle demonstrations are discussed in this study. The small and full-size catalyst development experiments resulted in PtRh/LNT with optimized noble metal loadings and Cu-SCR catalyst having a high durability and ammonia adsorption capacity. For this study, an aftertreatment system consisting of LNT plus exhaust bypass, passive SCR and engine independent reductant supply by on-board exhaust fuel reforming was developed and investigated. The concept definition considers NOX conversion, CO2 drawback and system complexity.

Synthesis of Efficient Powersplit CVT/IVT System

The target of the work is to find out the algorithm of definition of the ratios of mechanical part of complex powersplit CVT/IVT system with regard to the highest achievable efficiency. The presented synthesis is focused on powersplit systems, which will consist of a CVT part, differential and eventually by-pass gear. The algorithm will be programmed and become an integral part of the program Sungear developed on Czech Technical University in Prague for analyses and synthesis of planetary stepped transmissions and CVT/IVT powersplit systems. The article will mainly present the algorithm of definition of efficient powersplit system. For the search of the efficient powersplit system we assume that the following parameters are given: a Spread and efficiency of used CVT system. b Total spread of the whole powersplit CVT/IVT mechanism. c Optional: Ratios of the used CVT system. d Optional: Ratios of the whole powersplit CVT/IVT system.

Accelerated Fatigue and Modal Parameter Identification of Lightweight Structures

Car components are exposed to the random/harmonic/impact excitation which can result in component failure due to vibration fatigue. The stress and strain loads do depend on local stress concentration effects and also on the global structural dynamics properties. Standardized fatigue testing is long-lasting, while the dynamic fatigue testing can be much faster; however, the dynamical changes due to fatigue are usually not taken into account and therefore the identified fatigue and structural parameters can be biased. In detail: damage accumulation results in structural changes (stiffness, damping) which are hard to measure in real time; further, structural changes change the dynamics of the loaded system and without taking this changes into account the fatigue load in the stress concentration zone can change significantly (even if the excitation remains the same). This research presents a new approach for accelerated vibration testing of real structures.

Evaluation of Non-Uniform Upstream Flow Effects on Vehicle Aerodynamics

Historically vehicle aerodynamic development has focused on testing under idealised conditions; maintaining measurement repeatability and precision in the assessment of design changes. However, the on-road environment is far from ideal: natural wind is unsteady, roadside obstacles provide additional flow disturbance, as does the presence of other vehicles. On-road measurements indicate that turbulence with amplitudes up to 10% of vehicle speed and dominant length scales spanning typical vehicle sizes (1-10 m) occurs frequently. These non-uniform flow conditions may change vehicle aerodynamic behaviour by interfering with separated turbulent flow structures and increasing local turbulence levels. Incremental improvements made to drag and lift during vehicle development may also be affected by this non-ideal flow environment. On-road measurements show that the shape of the observed turbulence spectrum can be generalised, enabling the definition of representative wind conditions.

Systems engineering is not a new discipline for todays automotive OEMs and suppliers. So, why is it that many feel the discipline is under-utilized or not utilized at all in main-stream product development? For those that do believe systems engineering is a key activity in the development cycle, why is it common to disagree on a definition of what it is or how it manifests itself in the development cycle? If we examine the development activity of leading OEM's and suppliers in any industry, there can be no doubt that product development is a complex and intensive activity. Many disciplines are utilized with many specialized skills deployed throughout the lifecycle of the typical product, and even more so in the automotive industry. One can point to several processes that seem to indicate the presence of systems engineering, yet the ability to clearly define whether or not - and to what degree - we leverage systems engineering is still difficult.

Multi-Objective Optimization and Robust Design of Brake By Wire System Components

A Brake By Wire (BBW) system is generally composed of electro-mechanical calipers at each wheel, a pedal simulator and a central controller. The brake demand is processed by the pedal and the central controller commands the brake distribution for each brake actuator. The highly responsive and independent brake actuators lead to enhanced controllability which should result in not only better basic braking performance, but also improvements in various active braking functions such as integrated chassis control, driver assistance systems, or cooperative regenerative braking. Although the BBW system has the potential for numerous advantages and innovations in braking, it has yet to be successfully introduced in series production mainly due to safety and cost concerns. Recent studies have been made to investigate the functional safety aspects and additional mechanical backup measures in this regard.
