A Systematic Mapping Study on Security Countermeasures of In-Vehicle Communication Systems

Abstract The innovations of vehicle connectivity have been increasing dramatically to enhance the safety and user experience of driving, while the rising numbers of interfaces to the external world also bring security threats to vehicles. Many security countermeasures have been proposed and discussed to protect the systems and services against attacks. To provide an overview of the current states in this research field, we conducted a systematic mapping study (SMS) on the topic area “security countermeasures of in-vehicle communication systems.” A total of 279 papers are identified based on the defined study identification strategy and criteria. We discussed four research questions (RQs) related to the security countermeasures, validation methods, publication patterns, and research trends and gaps based on the extracted and classified data. Finally, we evaluated the validity threats and the whole mapping process.

Using a Dual-Layer Specification to Offer Selective Interoperability for Uptane

Abstract This work introduces the concept of a dual-layer specification structure for standards that separate interoperability functions, such as backward compatibility, localization, and deployment, from those essential to reliability, security, and functionality. The latter group of features, which constitute the actual standard, make up the baseline layer for instructions, while all the elements required for interoperability are specified in a second layer, known as a Protocols, Operations, Usage, and Formats (POUF) document. We applied this technique in the development of a standard for Uptane [1], a security framework for over-the-air (OTA) software updates used in many automobiles. This standard is a good candidate for a dual-layer specification because it requires communication between entities, but does not require a specific format for this communication.

Per SAE J3016 (2021), the Operational Design Domain (ODD) for a driving automation system is defined as “Operating conditions under which a given driving automation system, or feature thereof, is specifically designed to function, including, but not limited to, environmental, geographical, and time-of-day restrictions, and/or the requisite presence or absence of certain traffic or roadway characteristics.”; in short the ODD defines the limits within which the driving automation system is designed to operate, and as such, will only operate when the parameters described within the ODD are satisfied.. This information Report serves to provide terminology, definitions and taxonomy for use in describing an ODD and respective elements for a driving automation system. This classification and definition of a harmonized set of ODD elements is based on the collection and analysis of existing information from multiple sources.

Standardization of Graphics for Service Information and Translation Expense Reduction

The cost of human natural language translation of Service Information, Assembly Instructions, Training Materials, Operator Manuals and other similar documents is a major expense for manufacturers. One translation avoidance method involves replacing most of a document’s text with still and/or animated graphics. While the graphics with minimum text concept has savings potential, clarity of communication must be maintained for widespread application of this technique. The necessary clarity should be achieved if standards are established for the symbols and graphical conventions used. This paper provides an example of a repair procedure documented using the graphics with minimum text paradigm, describes many of the anticipated standards and provides an update on the progress towards achieving a standard development project.

Virtual Multi-Cylinder Engine Transient Test System

Researchers at the Powertrain Control Research Laboratory (PCRL) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison have developed a transient test system for single-cylinder engines that accurately replicates the dynamics of a multi-cylinder engine. The overall system can perform very rapid transients in excess of 10,000 rpm/second, and also replicates the rotational dynamics, intake gas dynamics, and heat transfer dynamics of a multi-cylinder engine. Testing results using this system accurately represent what would be found in the multi-cylinder engine counterpart. Therefore, engine developments can be refined to a much greater degree at lower cost, and these changes directly incorporated in the multi-cylinder engine with minimal modification. More importantly, various standardized emission tests such as the cold-start, FTP or ETC, can be run on this single-cylinder engine.

An Efficient Implementation of the SM Agreement Protocol for a Time Triggered Communication System

FlexRay is a time triggered automotive communication protocol that connects ECUs (Electronic Control Units) on which distributed automotive applications are executed. If exact agreement (e.g. on physical values measured by redundant sensors on different ECUs) must be reached in the presence of asymmetric communication faults, a byzantine agreement protocol like Signed Messages (SM) can be utilized. This paper gives examples of how byzantine faults can emerge in a FlexRay-based system and proposes optimizations for a FlexRay-specific implementation of the SM protocol. The protocol modifications allow for a reduction in the number of protocol messages under a slightly relaxed fault model, as well as for a reduction in the number of messages to be temporarily stored by the ECUs.

Use of AUTOSAR Framework to Assist Software Field Programming

Field reprogramming of electronic control units (ECU) via the serial communication bus for feature upgrades, software fixes is an area which has potential cost impacts to the OEMs. Due to increasing software complexity, feature content, up-integration considerations for ECUs in next generation vehicle platforms the expectation is for flash memory requirements to increase significantly in the future. A reduced reprogramming cycle that builds on top of the existing system framework would be of interest from a cost and timing aspects. Additionally deployment of the next generation of telematics based remote programming techniques would also benefit from shorter reprogramming time in ECUs. An approach to address field reprogramming time would be to migrate to high baud rate communication protocols like FlexRay or Ethernet from the traditional CAN based systems currently in use.

The Evaluation of Mechanical Design and Comparison of Automotive Oil Filters

Approximately 500 million oil filters are sold in the United States of America each year, and are not required by law to meet any Government or industry testing procedures prior to being sold in the US market. The lack of required testing has resulted in no uniform testing procedure which in many cases leads to misleading claims by the manufacturer and/or inferior filtration designs and construction materials. Due to the lack of mandatory testing, the majority of oil filter manufacturers use in-house labs with different filtering methods to highlight the filter's unique strengths while not disclosing all relevant filtering data and in turn the filters inherent weaknesses. Instead of manufacturers offering full disclosure of the relevant performance specifications and internal design characteristics of the oil filter, they state that the specifications are proprietary information.

Optimization of Test Parameters and Analysis Methods for Fuel Tank Slosh Noise

As the interior sound levels in cabin compartments of passenger vehicles continue to get quieter, noises from various sources which previously were not objectionable can become an issue. One such source is the “slosh noise” from liquid movement within fuel tanks. Vehicle manufacturers, responding to the phenomena, have turned to their suppliers and worked with them to establish robust test and analysis methods to characterize the NVH performance of their fuel storage and delivery systems. Test facilities have recently made great advancements in the capability to measure and characterize “fuel slosh noise” in tanks. However, the industry today lacks standardized procedures to apply to the issue, including defining test parameters and analysis methods (both of which are complex because of the time-domain nature of slosh events).

Accelerated Fatigue and Modal Parameter Identification of Lightweight Structures

Car components are exposed to the random/harmonic/impact excitation which can result in component failure due to vibration fatigue. The stress and strain loads do depend on local stress concentration effects and also on the global structural dynamics properties. Standardized fatigue testing is long-lasting, while the dynamic fatigue testing can be much faster; however, the dynamical changes due to fatigue are usually not taken into account and therefore the identified fatigue and structural parameters can be biased. In detail: damage accumulation results in structural changes (stiffness, damping) which are hard to measure in real time; further, structural changes change the dynamics of the loaded system and without taking this changes into account the fatigue load in the stress concentration zone can change significantly (even if the excitation remains the same). This research presents a new approach for accelerated vibration testing of real structures.

DSRC Rebroadcasting

Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) for vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) cooperative applications for advanced safety is becoming a reality. Many automotive manufactures are entering advanced research phases or even planning deployments of such applications in the near future. However, the success of most V2V applications requires full or near-full deployment of the DSRC devices in new and existing vehicles, which will take many years to accomplish. In the meantime, use of autonomous sensors in combination with V2V can augment this deployment transitional period. In this paper we propose a hybrid approach that uses autonomous sensors to rebroadcast information about unequipped neighboring vehicles. In addition to messages that a host vehicle sends about its own state (such as position, speed, and direction), additional sensing capabilities also allow sending information about neighboring vehicles. This information can be obtained from radars, cameras and other autonomous sensors.

Insights on the Configuration and Performances of SOME/IP Service Discovery

Scalable Service-Oriented Middleware on IP (SOME/IP) is a proposal aimed at providing service-oriented communication in vehicles. SOME/IP nodes are able to dynamically discover and subscribe to available services through the SOME/IP Service Discovery protocol (SOME/IP SD). In this context, a key performance criterion to achieve the required responsiveness is the subscription latency that is the time it takes for a client to subscribe to a service. In this paper we provide a recap of SOME/SD and list a number of assumptions based on what we can foresee about the use of SOME/IP in the automotive domain. Then, we identify the factors having an effect on the subscription latency, and, by sensitivity analysis, quantify their importance regarding the worst-case service subscription latency. The analysis and experiments in this study provide practical insights into how to best configure SOME/IP SD protocol.

A Model-Based Configuration Approach for Automotive Real-Time Operating Systems

Automotive embedded systems have become very complex, are strongly integrated, and the safety-criticality and real-time constraints of these systems raise new challenges. The OSEK/VDX standard provides an open-ended architecture for distributed real-time capable units in vehicles. This is supported by the OSEK Implementation Language (OIL), a language aiming at specifying the configuration of these real-time operating systems. The challenge, however, is to ensure consistency of the concept constraints and configurations along the entire product development. The contribution of this paper is to bridge the existing gap between model-driven systems engineering and software engineering for automotive real-time operating systems (RTOS). For this purpose a bidirectional tool bridge has been established based on OSEK OIL exchange format files.

Automated Test Setup for Edge Compute Connectivity Devices by Recreating Live Connected Ecosystem on the Bench

Connected vehicle services have come a long way from the early days of telematics, both in terms of breadth of the class of vehicles, and in terms of richness or complexity of the data being handled for Enhancing Customer Experience. The Connectivity Control unit (CCU) is a gateway device for the vehicle to the outside world. While it enables transmission of vehicle data along with the location information. CCU is currently validated in the vehicle to check functionality. It has cost, time drawbacks and prevents effective testing of many scenarios. Bench level validation will not be able to complete functionality validation. There is subset of validation tools or semi-automated solutions are available in the market, but they are not fully functional, and critically cannot perform end to end validation. Automated Test setup for CCU in lab simulating the entire field data of the vehicle with modifiable characteristics.

Automation Frame Work for Conformance Testing of Dual Wire High Speed CAN / CAN FD / LIN Physical Layer Requirements

In the OSI model for communication, the physical layer is the lowest layer close to communication lines. For automotive OEMs, physical layer conformance tests are mandatory. As the number of safety critical features in the vehicle is growing, ensuring signal fidelity is a major concern for reliable and real-time operation. CAN/ CAN FD/ LIN/ MOST/ FlexRay/ Ethernet are a few in-vehicle communication protocols in the vehicle network. It is very important for a communicating ECU to comply with protocol standards. Typical requirements per OEM’s specifications under CAN physical Layer include tests for termination resistance, bus voltage level, bit rate, recessive and dominant input thresholds, signal rise/fall time, slew rate, ground offset, sample point of a bit, CAN initialization time, fault-tolerant behavior etc. During the product development life cycle of an ECU, physical layer conformance tests play an important role in verifying signal characteristics.

Benchmarking a 2018 Toyota Camry UB80E Eight-Speed Automatic Transmission

As part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) continuing assessment of advanced light-duty automotive technologies in support of regulatory and compliance programs, a 2018 Toyota Camry front wheel drive eight-speed automatic transmission was benchmarked. The benchmarking data were used as inputs to EPA’s Advanced Light-duty Powertrain and Hybrid Analysis (ALPHA) vehicle simulation model to estimate GHG emissions from light-duty vehicles. ALPHA requires both detailed engine fuel consumption maps and transmission torque loss maps. EPA’s National Vehicle and Fuels Emissions Laboratory has developed a streamlined, cost-effective in-house method of transmission testing, capable of gathering a dataset sufficient to characterize transmissions within ALPHA. This testing methodology targets the range of transmission operation observed during vehicle testing over EPA’s city and highway drive cycles.

Optimal Management of Charge and Discharge of Electric Vehicles Based on CAN Bus Communication

With the shortage of energy and the continuous development of automotive technology, electric vehicles are gradually gaining popularity. The energy of electric vehicles mainly comes from the power grid, and its large-scale use is inseparable from the support of the power system. However, electric vehicles consume power quickly, have short driving ranges, and frequently charge, and there are plenty of problems such as disorder and randomness in charging, which is not conducive to rational planning of the power grid. Optimizing the charging problem of electric vehicles can not only save power resources but also bring huge economic benefits to operators of charging stations. In this paper, the CAN bus communication protocol, combined with GPS positioning, LabVIEW monitoring, GPRS transmitting and other technical means, can realize the information exchange of the "vehicle-charging device-distribution network".
