Ice Phobic Coatings for Control and Covered Surfaces

Silicones have been utilized in multiple industries in the last 50 years and their applications are still expanding as technology grows. Ice phobic coatings, as an example, have been utilized on lock walls, navigation channels, wind turbines, hydropower intakes, and aircraft. Without protection these applications have a high risk of failure in the functions they perform. For example, ice build up on an aircraft?s aerodynamic surfaces increases drag which reduces lift during flight operations. Utilizing a silicone ice phobic coating significantly reduces the adhesion of ice to aerodynamic surfaces. Compared to other polymeric materials, silicones are known for their broad operating temperature range and lend themselves to excellent performance in a variety of harsh environments. Especially in low temperatures where ice adhesion is a concern, silicones retain their elastomeric physical properties and low modulus.

Eurocae WG-72 Activities

The presentation provides an overview about the activities of Eurocae Working Group 72 (WG-72) starting with a brief synopsis of the context which suggested why such a committee should be established in 2006. It then goes into further detail about the drivers for the work of the committee, which call for the products to be delivered. It addresses some of the challenges with respect to its users. It points out that one of the lessons the committee learned was importance of the focus on the users, such that the products provide their maximum utility. Hence, the users should better be among the participants to achieve this objective. Other industries have dealt with the subject of Information System (or Cyber-Physical) Security long before this industry was forced to consider it. Consequently there are many industry standards and national or international norms, which may help to develop what is deemed needed for Civil Aviation.

Validating Time Triggered Ethernet on a Space Vehicle

This presentation provides a overview of validating Time Triggered Ethernet (TTE) for use as the network to interconnect the avionics for manned Space Vehicle. The next manned Space Vehicle will use Time Triggered-Gigabit Ethernet (TT-GbE) leveraged from commercial development of TTE critical Intellectual Property. There are several validation considerations of either separating TTE segments or adding new TTE segments onto the network caused by the different phases of a manned space vehicle from pre-launch to re-entry. Fiber Optic Strain Sensor Standardization - International and European Activities

With the increased demand for high volume, cost-effective, fiber-reinforced thermoplastic parts, the lack of high throughput systems has become more pronounced. Thermoforming as a method to generate complex shapes from a flat preform is dependable and fast. In order to use readily available, standard unidirectional impregnated thermoplastic tape in this process, a flat perform must be created prior to the thermoforming step. Formerly, creating the preform by hand layup was a time consuming and therefore costly, step. Fiberforge�?s patented RELAY� technology overcomes the challenges of handling thermoplastic prepreg tape and provides a solution through the automated creation of a flat preform, referred to as a Tailored Blank?. Producing a part for thermoforming with accurate ply orientation and scrap minimization is now as simple as loading a material spool followed by a pressing a start button. Study of Materials and Coatings Used for Drilling Carbon Fiber Re-inforced Plastics

With the increased usage of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics (CFRP) in the aircraft industry, there has been increased pressure to improve cutting tool life. Tungsten carbide tools were the first to be applied to CFRP materials. Poly Crystalline Diamond (PCD) tools also became an acceptable material to be used as a cutting tool material. In recent years, Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) diamond tools have become more popular as a cutting tool material for CFRP. This study compares these possible cutting tool materials in the drilling of CFRP. Wear is measured as well as hole quality. Life is determined by common industry standards with regard to fiber break out in a common CFRP material. An economic analysis is conducted in order to determine cost per hole. Mechanical Response of Hybrid Laminated Polymer Nanocomposite Structures: A Multilevel Numerical Analysis

Abstract The prediction of mechanical elastic response of laminated hybrid polymer composites with basic carbon nanostructure, that is carbon nanotubes and graphene, inclusions has gained importance in many advanced industries like aerospace and automotive. For this purpose, in the current work, a hierarchical, four-stage, multilevel framework is established, starting from the nanoscale, up to the laminated hybrid composites. The proposed methodology starts with the evaluation of the mechanical properties of carbon nanostructure inclusions, at the nanoscale, using advanced 3D spring-based finite element models. The nanoinclusions are considered to be embedded randomly in the matrix material, and the Halpin-Tsai model is used in order to compute the average properties of the hybrid matrix at the lamina micromechanics level.

Carbon Fiber/Epoxy Mold with Embedded Carbon Fiber Resistor Heater - Case Study

Abstract The paper presents a complete description of the design and manufacturing of a Carbon Fiber/epoxy mold with an embedded Carbon Fiber resistor heater, and the mold performances in terms of its surface temperature distribution and thermal deformations resulting from the heating. The mold was designed for manufacturing aileron skins from Vacuum Bag Only prepreg cured at 135°C. The glass transition temperature of the used resin-hardener system was about 175°C. To ensure homogenous temperature of the mold working surface in the course of curing, the Carbon Fiber heater was embedded in a layer of a highly heat-conductive cristobalite/epoxy composite, forming the core of the mold shell. Because the cristobalite/epoxy composite displayed much higher thermal expansion than CF/epoxy did, thermal stresses could arise due to this discrepancy in the course of heating.

The purpose of this document is to promote the use of these SAE standards, particularly for developing training programs for employee training, qualification in airlines and maintenance organizations, and as reference in regulatory guidance material. It summarizes, as a quick reference, the content of each training document and its relation to and interaction with other training documents. Thereby it allows users to select the appropriate training documents and syllabi to establish a comprehensive, sequential training program build-up customized to the specific needs of the aforementioned functions (see figure). Increased use of advanced composite structural materials on aircraft has resulted in the need to address the more demanding quality and non-destructive testing procedures. Accordingly, increased utilization of solid laminate composites is driving changes to airline NDT training requirements and greater emphasis on the application of accurate NDT methods. Modules, including an introduction to composite materials, composite NDI theory and practice, special cases and lessons learned, have been produced in addition to various hands-on NDT exercises. A set of proficiency specimens containing realistic composite structures and representative damage has been designed in order to reinforce teaching points of the course and “test” inspector’s proficiency. Extensive details of the course modules, hand-on exercises and the proficiency specimens are all presented in this report.
