Design Analysis of High Power Density Additively Manufactured Induction Motor

Induction machines (IM) are considered work horse for industrial applications due to their rugged, reliable and inexpensive nature; however, their low power density restricts their use in volume and weight limited environments such as an aerospace, traction and propulsion applications. Given recent advancements in additive manufacturing technologies, this paper presents opportunity to improve power density of induction machines by taking advantage of higher slot fill factor (SFF) (defined as ratio of bare copper area to slot area) is explored. Increase in SFF is achieved by deposition of copper in much more compact way than conventional manufacturing methods of winding in electrical machines. Thus a design tradeoff study for an induction motor with improved SFF is essential to identify and highlight the potentials of IM for high power density applications and is elaborated in this paper.

The extensive and increasing use of pneumatic springs in automotive applications has made it appropriate that this manual be prepared to assist the engineer and the designer in understanding the basic principles and uses of pneumatic springs. This manual provides descriptions of the principles involved in pneumatic spring function along with details of the various configurations of pneumatic spring devices and the unique characteristics of each. Pneumatic spring types have been defined correlating with SAE J511 in the SAE (Oct. 1970) handbook regarding pneumatic spring terminology. Background information tracing the evolution of pneumatic springs has been included, as well as some specific examples of design calculations to serve as a guideline for the designer.

Half the electric vehicle market value lies in larger road vehicles, notably cars, and here the legal restrictions are weaker or non-existent, and range anxiety compels most people to buy hybrids if they go electric at all. Over eight million hybrid cars will be made in 2025, each with a range extender, the additional power source that distinguishes them from pure electric cars. Add to that significant money spent on the same devices in buses, military vehicles, boats and so on and a major new market emerges. Whereas today's range extenders usually consist of little more than off- the- shelf internal combustion engines, these are rapidly being replaced by second- generation range extenders consisting of piston engines designed from scratch for fairly constant load. However, a more radical departure is the third- generation micro turbines and fuel cells that work at constant load.
