Effect of Carbon and Density on Single Tooth Bending Strength a Bevel Gear Investigation

2006-04-03
2006-01-0387
There are many factors that affect the durability of P/M gears. Among them is the property of single tooth bending strength. It is common knowledge that density, carbon, alloy composition, sintering and heat treatment play dominant roles in the strength and durability of P/M gears. This paper demonstrates and quantifies the main effects and interactive effects these variables have on single tooth bending strength of a specific high performance P/M bevel gear.

Much has been published concerning theory and practice in the compaction and sintering of powder metallurgy articles. Nevertheless a gap exists between knowledge of the controls necessary in manufacturing practice and the resulting properties of fabricated powder-metallurgy articles. This paper is offered as an attempt to narrow this gap.

Achieving AGMA 10 Quality Level for Automotive Gear Applications

1999-03-01
1999-01-0292
The technologies being employed by powder metal manufacturers have been developed to a level that allows for high performance power transfer in gearing. The merger of improved metallurgical and dimensional capabilities has resulted in the ability to produce gears with high strength and impact response and a degree of dimensional refinement for an AGMA class 10 or better.
