“Build Your Hybrid” - A Novel Approach to Test Various Hybrid Powertrain Concepts

Powertrain electrification is becoming increasingly common in the transportation sector to address the challenges of global warming and deteriorating air quality. This paper introduces a novel “Build Your Hybrid” approach to experience and test various hybrid powertrain concepts. This approach is applied to the light commercial vehicles (LCV) segment due to the attractive combination of a Diesel engine and a partly electrified powertrain. For this purpose, a demonstrator vehicle has been set up with a flexible P02 hybrid topology and a prototype Hybrid Control Unit (HCU). Based on user input, the HCU software modifies the control functions and simulation models to emulate different sub-topologies and levels of hybridization in the demonstrator vehicle. Three powertrain concepts are considered for LCVs: HV P2, 48V P2 and 48V P0 hybrid. Dedicated hybrid control strategies are developed to take full advantage of the synergies of the electrical system and reduce CO2 and NOx emissions.

Sustainable Propulsion in a Post-Fossil Energy World: Life-Cycle Assessment of Renewable Fuel and Electrified Propulsion Concepts

Faced with one of the greatest challenges of humanity – climate change – the European Union has set out a strategy to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 as part of the European Green Deal. To date, extensive research has been conducted on the CO2 life cycle analysis of mobile propulsion systems. However, achieving absolute net-zero CO2 emissions requires the adjustment of the relevant key performance indicators for the development of mobile propulsion systems. In this context, research is presented that examines the ecological and economic sustainability impacts of a hydrogen-fueled mild hybrid vehicle, a hydrogen-fueled 48V hybrid vehicle, a methanol-fueled 400V hybrid vehicle, a methanol-to-gasoline-fueled plug-in hybrid vehicle, a battery electric vehicle, and a fuel cell electric vehicle. For this purpose, a combined Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Life-Cycle Cost Assessment was performed for the different propulsion concepts.

Optimization of Electric Vehicle Exterior Noise for Pedestrian Safety and Sound Quality

The automotive industry continues to develop new powertrain and vehicle technologies aimed at reducing overall vehicle-level fuel consumption. Specifically, the use of electrified propulsion systems is expected to play an increasingly important role in helping OEM’s meet fleet CO2 reduction targets for 2025 and beyond. Electric and hybrid electric vehicles do not typically utilize IC engines for low-speed operation. Under these low-speed operating conditions, the vehicles are much quieter than conventional IC engine-powered vehicles, making their approach difficult to detect by pedestrians. To mitigate this safety concern, many manufacturers have synthesized noise (using exterior speakers) to increase detection distance. Further, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has provided recommendations pursuant to the Pedestrian Safety Enhancement Act (PSEA) of 2010 for such exterior noise signatures to ensure detectability.

Objectified Drivability Evaluation and Classification of Passenger Vehicles in Automated Longitudinal Vehicle Drive Maneuvers with Engine Load Changes

To achieve global market and brand specific drivability characteristics as unique selling proposition for the increasing number of passenger car derivatives, an objectified evaluation approach for the drivability capabilities of the various cars is required. Thereto, it is necessary to evaluate the influence of different engine concepts in various complex and interlinked powertrain topologies during engine load change maneuvers based on physical criteria. Such an objectification approach enables frontloading of drivability related engineering tasks by the execution of drivability development and calibration work within vehicle subcomponent-specific closed-loop real-time co-simulation environments in early phases of a vehicle development program. So far, drivability functionalities could be developed and calibrated only towards the end of a vehicle development program, when test vehicles with a sufficient level of product maturity became available.

NVH Comfort of Range Extenders for Electric Vehicles

The most appreciated driving characteristics of electric vehicles are the quietness and spontaneous torque rise of the powertrain. The application of range extenders (REX) with internal combustion engines (ICE) to increase the driving range is a favourable solution regarding costs and weight, especially in comparison with larger battery capacities. However, the NVH integration of a REX is challenging, if the generally silent driving characteristics of electric vehicles shall remain preserved. This paper analyses key NVH aspects for a REX design and integration to fulfil the high expectations regarding noise and vibration comfort in an electric vehicle environment. The ICE for a REX is typically dimensioned for lower power outputs, incorporating a low number of cylinder units, which is even more challenging concerning the NVH integration. It will be explained that sophisticated, innovative technologies are required on component and vehicle side to ensure best possible NVH comfort.

Fuel Cell System Development: A Strong Influence on FCEV Performance

In this article, the development challenges of a fuel cell system are explained using the example of the BREEZE! fuel cell range extender (FC-REX) applied in an FEV Liiona. The FEV Liiona is a battery electric vehicle based on a Fiat 500 developed by FEV. The BREEZE! system is the first applied 30 kW low temperature polymer electrolyte membrane (LT PEM) fuel cell system in the subcompact vehicle class. Due to the highly integrated system approach and dry cathode operation, a compact design of the range extender module with a system power density of 0.45 kW/l can be achieved so that the vehicle interior including trunk remains completely usable. System development for fuel cells significantly influences performance, efficiency, package, durability, and required maintenance effort of a fuel cell electric powertrain. In order to ensure safe and reliable operation, the fuel cell system has to be supplied with sufficient amounts of air, hydrogen, and coolant flows.

Enhancing BEV Energy Management: Neural Network-Based System Identification for Thermal Control Strategies

Modeling thermal systems in Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) is crucial for enhancing energy efficiency through predictive control strategies, thereby extending vehicle range. A major obstacle in this modeling is the often limited availability of detailed system information. This research introduces a methodology using neural networks for system identification, a powerful technique capable of approximating the physical behavior of thermal systems with minimal data requirements. By employing black-box models, this approach supports the creation of optimization-based operational strategies, such as Model Predictive Control (MPC) and Reinforcement Learning-based Control (RL). The system identification process is executed using MATLAB Simulink, with virtual training data produced by validated Simulink models to establish the method's feasibility. The neural networks utilized for system identification are implemented in MATLAB code.

Active Sound Design Methodologies for Hybrid and Electric Vehicles

The automotive industry continues to develop new powertrain and vehicle technologies aimed at reducing overall vehicle-level fuel consumption. Specifically, the use of innovative drivetrain technologies including conventional and electrified propulsion systems is expected to play an increasingly important role in helping OEMs meet fleet CO2 reduction targets for 2025 and beyond. NVH development for vehicles with electrified powertrains introduces new challenges, which need to be understood and solved. The electrified vehicle space spans variants from micro and mild hybrids all the way through plug-in hybrids and fully electric vehicles. In addition to conventional NVH development methodologies, active sound design (ASD) can play a crucial role to enhance the interior sound perception of such vehicles and hence, improve customer acceptance of new technologies. This paper will begin with an introduction to the NVH challenges posed by electrified vehicles.
