Thermo-Mechanical Analysis of a Cast Iron Exhaust Manifold: a Comparison Between the Traditional and a New Methodology

Thermo-structural analysis of components is usually carried out by means of two FE models, one that solves the thermal problem and one that, using the results of the thermal model, computes strains and stresses. The interaction between the two models is based on the superposition principle, but it means that the mutual effects and the non-linearities between the two physical problems are neglected. In this paper a multiphysics approach based on the Cell Method is proposed and it is applied to a time dependent thermo-mechanical case study represented by an exhaust manifold simulacrum: the coupled thermal and mechanical problems are solved in an unique run, giving the opportunity to take into account mutual effects. Comparing the results with the traditional FE analysis the advantages in terms of accuracy and computational time achieved through the proposed methodology are highlighted.

In such a situation, everything that causes either a decrease of the available power output or an increment of auxiliary losses would determine a sensible overall efficiency reduction.

The paper presents experimental investigation and numerical simulation of a commercial exhaust manifold gasket. Non-linearities in geometric and material behavior make exhaust manifold gasket modeling quite complicated. In the paper, two different FE modeling techniques are compared in order to suggest the best modeling way. Experimental data are collected in order to validate the numerical models. Differences between the two modeling techniques are emphasized and a choice criterion is suggested.

Multifunctional System for Trace Gas Contaminants Removal

The Atmospheric Revitalization System (ARS) provides carbon dioxide removal, trace contaminant control, and gas constituent analysis. In this field, the interest of RecycLAB [5], the TAS-I Advanced Live Support Research & Development laboratory is directed to trace gas contaminants removal and monitoring. During manned space mission, the decontamination of cabin or rack air after contingency events such as fire or pyrolysis is a priority for the crew safety. In this paper, basic zeolites, obtained by impregnation of common zeolites with a basic oxide, are used to remove acid gas contaminants from air stream. A multi-functional system, able to accommodate reactors of different shape, characteristics and set-up, is used at this purpose. This breadboard, called ZEUS (Zeolites for an Environmental-control Unit in Space), is made of AISI 316L stainless steel and consists of a closed loop, in which the inner volume is completely isolated from the external environment.

Identification of Modal Parameters in Frequency Domain with Emphasis on Output Only Cross-Spectral Density Functions

This paper presents a technique for extracting modal parameters of a linear multi degree of freedom system in the frequency domain. The roots of the technique are the well known rational fraction polynomials method but emphasis is given to the application to output-only data in the form of cross-spectral density functions. A discussion is presented on the possibility of achieving reliable results also for structures undergoing multiple input excitations. Numerical stability of the technique is obtained by properly scaling both the frequency and the cross-spectrum axes. Good performance of the method are shown for numerical examples and for a test case on an actual structure.

Hardware and Virtual Test-Rigs for Automotive Steel Wheels Design

The aim of this paper is to study in deep the peculiar test-rigs and experimental procedures adopted to the fulfilment of the principal requirements of automotive steel wheels, in particular regarding fatigue damaging. In the discussion, the standard requirements, the OEM specifications and the dimensional and geometric tolerances are approached. As result of an increasingly necessity to improve the performance of the components, innovative virtual test benches are presented. Differently from their traditional precursors, virtual test-rigs give an extended view of the physical behaviour of the component as the possibility to monitor stress-strain distribution in deep. In the first section, the state of the art and the specifications are listed. Secondly, the adopted hardware test-rigs as the experimental tests are described in detail. In the third one, proposed virtual test-rig is discussed.

Fuel Cell Size and Weight Reduction Due to Innovative Metallic Bipolar Plates: Technical Process Details and Improvements

In the automotive field the application of electric propulsion systems based on fuel cells requires a constant and continuing research of several optimized solutions, especially in terms of weight and size reduction. These key-factors tend to influence significantly the performance of the vehicle where the system is installed on. The main objective of the paper is to obtain breakthroughs in designing, manufacturing and assembling a fuel cell stack through the development of innovative metallic bipolar plates, that allows to set up high power density stacks, by lowering sensibly weight and size. The research activity carried out by the aforementioned authors is focused on the choice of suitable materials and the development of optimized tools, processes and techniques, in order to be able to move rapidly towards thinner bipolar plates, with new compact geometries that ensure the required stack output power.

Experimental Investigation on Three Different Ceramic Substrate Materials for a Diesel Particulate Filter

Three different ceramic substrate materials (Silicon Carbide, Cordierite and Aluminum Titanate) for a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) for a European passenger car diesel engine have been experimentally investigated in this work. The filters were soot loaded under real world operating conditions on the road and then regenerated in two different ways that simulate the urban driving conditions, which are the most severe for DPF regeneration, since the low exhaust flow has a limited capability to absorb the heat generated by the soot combustion. The tests showed higher temperature peaks, at the same soot loading, for Cordierite and Aluminum Titanate compared to the Silicon Carbide, thus leading to a lower soot mass limit, which in turn required for these components a higher regeneration frequency with draw backs in terms of fuel consumption and lube oil dilution.

The use of composite materials is very important in automotive field to meet the European emission and consumption standards set for 2020. The most important challenge is to apply composite materials in structural applications not only in racing vehicles or supercars, but also in mass-production vehicles. In this paper is presented a real case study, that is the suspension wishbone arm (with convergence tie and pull-rod system) of the XAM 2.0 urban vehicle prototype, that it has the particular characteristics that of the front and rear, and left and right suspension system has the same geometry. The starting point has been an existing solution made in aluminum to manufacture a composite one.

A numerical Methodology for Induction Motor Control: Lookup Tables Generation and Steady-State Performance Analysis

This paper presents a numerical methodology to generate lookup tables that provide d- and q-axis stator current references for the control of electric motors. The main novelty with respect to other literature references is the introduction of the iron power losses in the equivalent-circuit electric motor model implemented in the optimization routine. The lookup tables generation algorithm discretizes the motor operating domain and, given proper constraints on maximum stator current and magnetic flux, solves a numerical optimization problem for each possible operating point to determine the combination of d- and q- axis stator currents that minimizes the imposed objective function while generating the desired torque. To demonstrate the versatility of the proposed approach, two different variants of this numerical interpretation of the motor control problem are proposed: Maximum Torque Per Ampere and Minimum Electromagnetic Power Loss.

A Modal-Geometrical Selection Criterion for Master Nodes Applied to Engine Components

Usually, both an experimental modal analysis or a numerical modal analysis performed on reduced model present the problem of master nodes selection. A methodology based on the experience is normally used or computationally heavy criterion can be applied. In that paper, the Modal-Geometrical Selection Criterion (MoGeSeC) is applied to a crankshaft, both for an EMA (experimental modal analysis) and for a reduction procedure. Then the results are compared with other literature criteria. As far as the EMA is concerned, the nodes suggested by MoGeSeC and other criteria are used for identification of the component. The connection conditions between components are origin of uncertainty but in that case the comparison is done for each methodology in the same conditions. In that way MoGeSeC proves to be a very quick and accurate method because the nodes it selects depicts very well the dynamic behavior of the components.

A Methodology to Investigate the Dynamic Characteristics of ESP and EHB Hydraulic Units

The paper deals with the Hardware-In-the-Loop based methodology which was adopted to evaluate the dynamic characteristics of Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and Electro-Hydraulic Brake (EHB) components. Firstly, it permits the identification of the time delays due to the hardware of the actuation system. Secondly, the link between the hardware of the hydraulic unit and a vehicle model running in real time permits the objective evaluation of the performance induced by the single components of different hydraulic units in terms of vehicle dynamics. The paper suggests the main parameters and tests which can help the car manufacturer in evaluating ESP hydraulic units, without expensive road tests.

A Methodology for Automotive Steel Wheel Life Assessment

A methodology for an efficient failure prediction of automotive steel wheels during fatigue experimental tests is proposed. The strategy joins the CDTire simulative package effectiveness to a specific wheel finite element model in order to deeply monitor the stress distribution among the component to predict damage. The numerical model acts as a Software-in-the-loop and it is calibrated with experimental data. The developed tool, called VirtualWheel, can be applied for the optimisation of design reducing prototyping and experimental test costs in the development phase. In the first section, the failure criterion is selected. In the second one, the conversion of hardware test-rig into virtual model is described in detail by focusing on critical aspects of finite element modelling. In conclusion, failure prediction is compared with experimental test results.
