Tribodynamics of a New De-Clutch Mechanism Aimed for Engine Downsizing in Off-Road Heavy-Duty Vehicles

Clutches are commonly utilised in passenger type and off-road heavy-duty vehicles to disconnect the engine from the driveline and other parasitic loads. In off-road heavy-duty vehicles, along with fuel efficiency start-up functionality at extended ambient conditions, such as low temperature and intake absolute pressure are crucial. Off-road vehicle manufacturers can overcome the parasitic loads in these conditions by oversizing the engine. Caterpillar Inc. as the pioneer in off-road technology has developed a novel clutch design to allow for engine downsizing while vehicle’s performance is not affected. The tribological behaviour of the clutch will be crucial to start engagement promptly and reach the maximum clutch capacity in the shortest possible time and smoothest way in terms of dynamics. A multi-body dynamics model of the clutch system is developed in MSC ADAMS. The flywheel is introducing the same speed and torque as the engine (represents the engine input to the clutch).

Sound Transmission Through Primary Bulb Rubber Sealing Systems

Structural sound transmission through primary bulb (PB) sealing systems was investigated. A two-degrees-of-freedom analytical model was developed to predict the sound transmission characteristics of a PB seal assembly. Detailed sound transmission measurements were made for two different random excitations: acoustic and aerodynamic. A reverberation room method was first used, whereby a seal sample installed within a test fixture was excited by a diffuse sound field. A quiet flow facility was then used to create aerodynamic pressure fluctuations which acted as the excitation. The space-averaged input pressure within the pseudo door gap cavity and the sound pressure transmitted on the quiescent side of the seal were obtained in each case for different cavity dimensions, seal compression, and seal designs. The sound transmission predictions obtained from the lumped element model were found to be in reasonable agreement with measured values.

Prediction and Verification of Energy Flow in a Structure Using an Energy Finite Element Approach

Wavenumber domain methods have been developed to experimentally determine the flexural group speeds and loss factors in beam elements and the flexural power transmission and reflection coefficients of joints in a structure. These techniques are used in this paper to measure uncertain information for an Energy Finite Element Method (EFEM) model of a ladder frame structure. The loss factors and group speeds in each element in the structure were measured and found to compare well with the analytical predictions. However, the flexural power transmission and reflection coefficients of the joints in the structure were found to be significantly different from analytically predicted values. EFEM predictions and measured velocities for several components are compared.

Model Based Design Accelerates the Development of Mechanical Locomotive Controls

Smaller locomotives often use mechanical transmissions instead of diesel-electric drive systems typically used in larger locomotives. This paper discusses how Model Based Design was used to develop the complete drive train control system for a 24 ton sugar cane locomotive. A complete MATLAB Simulink machine model was built to fully test and verify the shift control logic, traction control, vehicle speed limiting, and braking control for this locomotive application before it was commissioned. The model included the engine, torque converter, planetary transmission, drive line, and steel on steel driving surface. Simulation was used to debug all control code and test and refine control strategies so that the initial field commissioning in remote Australia was executed very quickly with minimal engineering support required.

Layered Fibrous Treatments for a Sound Absorption and Sound Transmission

In this paper, experimental evidence will be presented to demonstrate that unstiffened, low density fibrous materials are “limp”: i.e., their in vacuo bulk stiffness is very small compared to that of air with the result that the materials' solid phase motion becomes acoustically significant. Next, a new limp porous material model is presented. It is shown that this model may be used in conjunction with transfer matrices to predict the absorption or transmission loss of arbitrarily layered combinations of fibrous layers, permeable or impermeable membranes, and air spaces. The predictions of this model agree well with experimental measurements and so may be used to optimize sound absorption or transmission treatments.

Laboratory Method for Evaluating the Sound Transmission Characteristics of Primary Bulb Body Seals

A laboratory method was developed to evaluate the sound transmission characteristics of road vehicle body seals. Primary bulb seal samples were mounted in a fixture which approximated the geometry of a typical door-gap cavity. The seal fixture was integrated with a rigid panel into the floor of a quiet, low-speed, closed test-section wind tunnel. Flow-excited pressure fluctuations in the door-gap cavity were induced by the air stream instead of by sound waves in a quiescent environment as in standard transmission loss measurements. A soundproof anechoic enclosure located underneath the test-section floor isolated the sound receiver. The sound level reduction between the cavity pressure and the sound pressure into the enclosure, a quantity directly related to the sound transmission loss (TL) in this case, was measured accurately between the 1250 and 5000 Hz one-third octave bands.

Frictional Performance Test for Transmission and Drive Train Oils

Lubricating oil affects the performance of friction materials in transmission, steering and brake systems. The TO-2 Test measured friction retention characteristics of lubricating oils used with sintered bronze friction discs. This paper introduces a new friction performance test for drive train lubricants that will be used to support Caterpillar's new transmission and drive train fluid requirements, TO-4, which measures static and dynamic friction, wear, and energy capacity for six friction materials, and replaces the TO-2 test. The new test device to be introduced is an oil cooled, single-faced clutch in the Link Engineering Co. M1158 Oil/Friction Test Machine.

Development of a New Sound Transmission Test for Automotive Sealant Materials

A new laboratory method has been developed to evaluate the acoustical properties of expandable and other automotive sealants. These materials are used to reduce wind, road, and powertrain noise transmission into passenger compartments. In the new method, ASTM E 1050 absorption measurement equipment is used along with a new sample holder, a downstream microphone holder (providing two additional microphone locations) and an anechoic termination. These additions permit measurement of normal incidence transmission loss as well as absorption. It is intended to encourage adoption of this method as a standard way of quantifying the acoustical performance of sealants and sealing composites in automotive noise control applications.

Acoustical Finite Element Model of Elastic Porous Materials

A finite element model (FEM) of elastic noise control materials like polyurethane foams is presented in this paper, and its implementation in two-dimensional form as a computer program is discussed. So that realistic noise control treatments could be studied, methods for coupling the foam FEM with conventional acoustical and structural finite elements are also described. The validity of the foam FEM is demonstrated by computing the sound absorption and transmission characteristics of simple coupled air/foam/panel systems and by comparing the results with existing experimental and analytical results for such arrangements. The FEM has been used to show that the constraint of a foam layer at its edge stiffens the foam acoustically. In addition, it has been found that the constraint of the ends of the facing panels in a foam-lined double panel system increases the sound transmission loss significantly at low frequencies.
