The tests are static in nature to minimize complexity and cost of required testing facilities. As far as practical, applied static loads should take into account the combined static and dynamic loads anticipated in service. It is intended that tests shall be non-destructive in nature and not result in damage unless ultimate load conditions are employed. Test equipment and methods of testing described are not meant to be restrictive. Alternate equivalent methods to accomplish the desired results may be employed. In selected cases, tests may be repeated under ultimate load conditions when required for substantiation of analytical data. If this becomes necessary, the parts deformed may be removed and replaced prior to the retest.

This SAE Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) defines minimum requirements for an aircraft transport ULD to transport horses properly and safely by air, to protect the horse(s) from injuries, and to protect the aircraft from corrosion created by waste spill. The ULD is designed to accommodate one horse or several. There are two types of ULDs for aircraft transportation of horses: a Type 1: The ULD is an airworthiness certified structural container, satisfying the requirements of NAS 3610 for the appropriate base size. b Type 2: The ULD consists of a self-contained stall which is positioned on a standard aircraft pallet and restrained to the pallet by means of a cargo pallet net or by straps. WARNING: It is the carrier’s responsibility to obtain airworthiness approval for a Type 2 unit using strap-restraint. Refer to 7.1 b (Documentation).

The dedicated aircraft addressed herein is to be an uncompromised all-freighter aircraft developed primarily for use in the civil transport industry. The requirements of this document are applicable but not limited to airborne equipment which is subject to the airworthiness directives of FAR Part 25 and which is designed to accommodate unitized cargo in the form of intermodal containers and other compatible unitized load devices. Intermodability in the context of this document encompasses the air-truck-rail-sea modes, and considers uncertificated as well as certificated unit load devices (ULDs). This document covers the fundamental prerequisites for the aircraft cargo compartment and the onboard cargo handling and restraining system. The cargo system and compartment considers primarily 96 in (2.44 m) wide, multiple bottom configuration ULDs. The cargo system and compartment should handle outsize cargo and should consider Civil Reserve Air Fleet (CRAF) requirement compatibility.
