White Paper to Support Supersession of MIL-S-8879C With AS8879C

2018-08-23
HISTORICAL
AIR5926
This paper was prepared to support supersession of MIL-S-8879C with Screw Thread Conformity Task Force selected industry standard AS8879C, published by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). Other documentation changes will be covered by separate papers. Separate papers are anticipated for thread gaging issues, and thread gage calibration procedures. The STC-TF decided that the thread design standard needed to be completed before thread gage definition could be addressed. Thread gage definition has to be known before calibration procedures can be addressed.

Thread Inspection Practices

2020-02-03
CURRENT
AS5870
This document addresses AS8879 thread inspection issues relating to selection, usage and capability of gages. It addresses the selection of calibrated measurement gages, the need for defined quality metrics, the methodology of determining the appropriate guardband factors, and the minimum inspection requirements for single element pitch diameter gages. Users of this document shall apply the information described herein for the evaluation of the capability of their measurements based on the measurement consumer risk. It involves the analysis of the measurement (product) distribution and biases of both the product and measurement system distributions. It protects the consumer from the worst case distribution results. A whitepaper has been developed to provide supporting documentation and the rationale used in the development of this standard. This whitepaper will be published by the SAE as an Aerospace Information Report (AIR6553).

Screw Threads, Metric Buttress - MJB Profile

2019-01-03
CURRENT
MA1696B
This standard establishes the basic triangular profile for the MJB thread form, the design profiles, standard pitches, tolerance classes, formulae for tolerances and dimensions, tolerance tables, and a system of designations. Because of the specialized application for buttress threads, no preferred diameter-pitch series have been established for this standard and each application will require use of the thread formulae for dimensions and related tolerances given herein for deriving the thread dimensional requirements.

Screw Threads - UNJ Profile, Inch Controlled Radius Root with Increased Minor Diameter

2003-01-15
HISTORICAL
AS8879C
This SAE Aerospace Standard (AS) specifies the characteristics of screw threads - UNJ profile inch series, including a mandatory controlled radius as specified in Table 1 at the root of the external thread. The minor diameter of both external and internal threads provides a basic thread height of .5625H to accommodate the external thread maximum root radius. The following detailed design requirements are included: a Screw threads - UNJ basic profile and design profiles. b Standard series of diameter-pitch combinations for nominal thread diameters from 0.060 to 6.000 inches. c Standard thread classes and form tolerances. d Formulae for thread dimensions and tolerances. e Method of designating UNJ threads. f Tables for selected diameter-pitch combinations for close tolerance mechanical thread applications. g Tables for screw thread - UNJ profile thread limit dimensions.

Screw Threads - UNJ Profile, Inch

1999-01-01
HISTORICAL
AS8879A
This SAE Aerospace Standard (AS) specifies the characteristics of the UNJ profile inch series of screw threads, to include a mandatory controlled radius of 0.18142P to 0.15011P at the root of the external thread and with a minor diameter of both external and internal threads increased to provide a basic thread height of 0.5625H in order to accommodate the external thread maximum root radius.
