Glossary of Terms Related to Fluid Filters and Filter Testing

2012-05-29
HISTORICAL
J1124_201205
Over the years during which fluid filtration systems have been developing, many terms have come into use for descriptions of characteristics of filter media, filter assemblies, test methods, and test materials. Inevitably, some terms have been applied loosely, so that the same term may have different meaning to different people, or in different frames of reference. Recognizing the need for clearly defined terms, which can have only one meaning for all persons in all circumstances, so that documents dealing with standard methods of evaluation of filters will have only one interpretation, the Filter Test methods Subcommittee of the SAE Engine Committee has compiled this Glossary of related terms. No attempt has been made to produce an all-inclusive document, containing definitions of all terms related to all types of fluid filters. Instead, the Glossary is confined to the terms likely to be encountered in relation to filters for lubricating oil and fuels.

Full Flow Lubricating Oil Filters Multipass Method for Evaluating Filtration Performance

2002-06-27
CURRENT
J1858_200206
This standard establishes a multipass filtration performance test with continuous contaminant injection for lubricating oil filter elements. It also includes a procedure for determining the contaminant capacity, particulate removal characteristics, and pressure loss. It also includes a test currently applicable to lubricating oil filter elements which exhibit a 10 µm filtration ratio of less than 75 and a rated flow between 4 and 600 L/min. This standard provides a test procedure which yields reproducible test data for evaluating the filtration performance of a lubricating oil filter element.

Fuel Filter—Initial Single-Pass Efficiency Test Method

2006-08-09
HISTORICAL
J1985_200608
This SAE Standard is intended for all sizes of fuel filters, so a variety of test stands may be required depending upon flow rate. The low contamination level, downstream clean-up filter, and short duration of the test, ensures that the particle retention ability of the filter is measured in a single pass as no appreciable loading or regression will occur.

Fuel Filter Test Methods

1999-01-21
HISTORICAL
J905_199901
The purpose of this fuel filter test method is to provide standardized methods for evaluating the performance characteristics of fuel filters by bench test methods. This, combined with data obtained from application tests, may be used to establish standards of performance for filters when tested by these standard methods. Many variations in requirements of filtration to protect fuel supply equipment on engines and variations in operating conditions make it difficult to specify meaningful "in-service" performance standards by which a filter may be judged. By the use of these standard test methods, test conditions are always the same, and comparisons of the laboratory performance of filters may be made with a high degree of confidence. Once the requirements of a particular application are known, performance standards for suitable filters may be established by these test methods, and adequacy of performance of filters for the job may be determined.

Fuel Filter Test Method

1964-11-01
HISTORICAL
J905_196411
This test method describes laboratory testing of final stage fuel filters used to protect engines from abrasive contaminant. It has been developed to provide a standardized method of rating fuel filter performance in terms of flow, pore size, contaminant holding capacity, efficiency, and media migration. Although development of this test method was based on diesel fuel filters, it is applicable to all types of liquid fuel filters used on automotive type internal combustion engines. Typical filter systems, service and space problems, environmental and other special factors which influenced the development of this test method are covered in more detail in “Fuel Filter Test Methods” (SAE Technical Progress Series, Vol. 1). Since the contaminant used in this test is a hard, dry, and abrasive material, the ratings for efficiency and contaminant holding capacity are not necessarily applicable under conditions where a soft, gummy, sludge type contaminant is present.
