Corrosion: Understanding the Basics

2000-01-01
This book presents a practical "how to" approach to understanding and solving the problems of corrosion of structural materials. Although it is written mainly for those having a limited technical background in corrosion, it also provides more experienced engineers with a useful overview of the principles of corrosion and can be used as a general guide for developing a corrosion-control program. This electronic publication includes identification of the various forms of corrosion, critical factors leading to a specific type of corrosion, necessary preventive steps to eliminate or reduce corrosion damage, protective-coating selection, corrosion characteristics of common structural materials, corrosion-testing programs, and failure-analysis procedures.

Corrosion of Weldments

2006-12-01
Corrosion failures of industrial components are commonly associated with welding. The reasons are many and varied. For example, welding may reduce the resistance to corrosion and environmentally assisted cracking by altering composition and microstructure, modifying mechanical properties, introducing residual stress, and creating physical defects. Corrosion of Weldments details the many forms of weld corrosion and the methods used to minimize weld corrosion. Chapters on specific alloys groups—carbon and alloy steels, stainless steels, high-nickel alloys, and nonferrous alloys—describe both general welding characteristics and the metallurgical factors that influence corrosion behavior. Corrosion problems associated with dissimilar metal weldments are also examined. Special challenges caused by high-temperature environments are discussed.

Composite Materials Handbook Volume 1 - Revision H

2022-09-06
The first volume of this six-volume compendium contains guidelines for determining the properties of polymer matrix composite material systems and their constituents, as well as the properties of generic structural elements, including test planning, test matrices, sampling, conditioning, test procedure selection, data reporting, data reduction, statistical analysis, and other related topics. Special attention is given to the statistical treatment and analysis of data. Volume 1 contains guidelines for general development of material characterization data as well as specific requirements for publication of material data in CMH-17. The primary purpose of this volume of the handbook is to document industry best-practices for engineering methodologies related to testing, data reduction, and reporting of property data for current and emerging composite materials. It is used by engineers worldwide in designing and fabricating products made from composite materials.

Brake NVH: Testing and Measurements

2011-03-29
As other vehicle systems have become more refined, more attention must be placed on brake NVH issues because they can cause a negative customer experience. From the laboratory to the road, the use of technology as well as further study by engineers is helping to lessen noise, judder, and vibration in cars. This book provides readers with a fundamental understanding of current practices for measuring and testing brake NVH. From coverage of basic definitions and concepts to in-depth analysis of on-road testing procedures, it will serve as a comprehensive reference guide for brake test technicians, test engineers, lab managers, and others who work on making brakes quieter, smoother, more refined, and more reliable. Readers will learn how to test for brake noise, what tools to use, and which recent standards and practices have led to the successful measurement of brake noise and vibration.

Automatic Target Recognition

2016-01-01
Automatic Target Recognition provides an inside view of the automatic target recognition (ATR) domain from the perspective of an engineer working in the field for 40 years. The algorithm descriptions and testing procedures covered in the book are appropriate for addressing military problems and unique aspects and considerations in the design, testing, and fielding of ATR systems. These considerations need to be understood by ATR engineers working in the defense industry as well as by their government customers. The final chapter discusses the future of ATR and provides a type of Turing test for determining if an ATR system is truly smart (neuromorphic or brain-like). The Appendix provides difficult-to-find resources available to the ATR engineer.
