Voiture Minimum

2011-03-01
Voted one of the top ten new design books, this lavishly illustrated book is a colorful account of Le Corbusier's love affair with the automobile, his vision of the ideal vehicle, and his tireless promotion of a design that industry never embraced. Le Corbusier, who famously called a house "a machine for living," was fascinated-even obsessed-by another kind of machine, the automobile. His writings were strewn with references to autos: "If houses were built industrially, mass-produced like chassis, an aesthetic would be formed with surprising precision," he wrote in Toward an Architecture (1923). In his "white phase" of the twenties and thirties, he insisted that his buildings be photographed with a modern automobile in the foreground. Le Corbusier moved beyond the theoretical in 1936, entering (with his cousin Pierre Jeanneret) an automobile design competition, submitting plans for "a minimalist vehicle for maximum functionality," the Voiture Minimum.

Vehicle-Bridge Interaction Dynamics

2004-01-01
The commercial operation of the bullet train in 1964 in Japan marked the beginning of a new era for high-speed railways. Because of the huge amount of kinetic energy carried at high speeds, a train may interact significantly with the bridge and even resonate with it under certain circumstances. This book is unique in that it is devoted entirely to the interaction between the supporting bridges and moving trains, the so-called vehicle-bridge interaction (VBI). It provides an up-to-date coverage of research conducted on various aspects of the VBI problems. Using the series of VBI elements derived, the authors study a number of frontier problems, including the impact response of bridges with elastic bearings, the dynamic response of curved beam to moving centrifugal forces, the stability and derailment of trains moving over bridges shaken by earthquakes, the impact response of two trains crossing on a bridge, the steady-state response of trains moving over elevated bridges, and so on.

Vehicle Thermal Management

2004-04-08
The efficiency of thermal systems (HVAC, engine cooling, transmission, and power steering) has improved greatly over the past few years. Operating these systems typically requires a significant amount of energy, however, which could adversely affect vehicle performance. To provide customers the level of comfort that they demand in an energy-efficient manner, innovative approaches must be developed.

Vehicle Occupant Restraint Systems: Trends, Companies, Market Forecasts to 2020

2012-07-01
With an ever greater value placed on safety by consumers, vehicle manufacturers around the world are rushing to develop new and innovative safety systems. The average safety content per vehicle has risen 17% since 2004 to around $270 per car in 2012. And this figure is set to grow, both in the established markets of North America, Western Europe and Japan, as well as the developing markets such as China and Brazil. But although the prospects look good for the major suppliers of conventional and advanced occupant safety systems, increasing unit growth will be partly offset by strong pricing pressure from vehicle manufacturers. Brand new research on automotive vehicle occupant restraint systems The 2012 edition of this report reviews the key market drivers for vehicle occupant restraint systems, extending and updating the analysis originally published in 2004, as well as reviewing the trends in the intervening eight years.

Vehicle Manufacturers in the Race for Environmental Success

2008-12-01
This ground-breaking new report from ABOUT Automotive assesses to what extent the automotive industry has started to clean up its act, and reduce its environmental impact. The report tackles two clear problems; the damage we are causing to the planet (climate change), and the fact that we, as a society, are dependent on a finite resource (peak oil). The report also assesses the industry’s response to the answer to these two problems – a reduction in energy use and a switch to sustainable renewable energy sources. Central to this new research is the exclusive “Green ranking.” The 12 leading vehicle manufacturers are individually assessed, and ranked according to a variety of criteria – using examples of best practice as benchmarks. The vehicle manufacturers covered are: • BMW • Daimler • Fiat • Ford • GM • Honda • Hyundai • Nissan • PSA • Renault • Toyota • Volkswagen The activities, attitudes and strategies of the 12 vehicle manufacturers are also charted.

Vehicle Compatibility in Automotive Crashes

2005-03-29
For years, reducing the number of traffic-related fatalities and injuries has been a major problem throughout the world. Today, it has gained much more momentum in view of rapidly increasing SUV, van, and light-truck populations relative to the number of passenger cars, and due to significant improvements in technologies that facilitate a better understanding of the interaction dynamics among widely differing size vehicles. Unless disparities in crashworthiness among vehicles of different masses, sizes, and structural characteristics in mixed crash environments are successfully taken into account, the challenge toward improved vehicle safety will continue. This two-part compendium provides the most comprehensive information available on the entire spectrum of vehicle crash compatibility. The first part presents oral comments captured from the 2003 SAE World Congress panel discussion on compatibility.

Vehicle Accident Analysis and Reconstruction Methods, Third Edition

2022-01-07
In this third edition of Vehicle Accident Analysis & Reconstruction Methods, Raymond M. Brach and R. Matthew Brach have expanded and updated their essential work for professionals in the field of accident reconstruction. Most accidents can be reconstructed effectively using calculations and investigative and experimental data: the authors present the latest scientific, engineering, and mathematical reconstruction methods, providing a firm scientific foundation for practitioners. Accidents that cannot be reconstructed using the methods in this book are rare. In recent decades, the field of crash reconstruction has been transformed through the use of technology. The advent of event data records (EDRs) on vehicles signaled the era of modern crash reconstruction, which utilizes the same physical evidence that was previously available as well as electronic data that are measured/captured before, during, and after the collision.

Vehicle Accident Analysis and Reconstruction Methods, Second Edition

2011-04-12
Designed for the experienced practitioner, this new book aims to help reconstruction specialists with problems they may encounter in everyday analysis. The authors demonstrate how to take the physics behind accidents out of the idealized world and into practical situations. Real-world examples are used to illustrate the methods, clarify important concepts, and provide practical applications to those working in the field. Thoroughly revised, this new edition builds on the original exploration of accident analysis, reconstruction, and vehicle design. Enhanced with new material and improved chapters on key topics, an expanded glossary of automotive terms, and a bibliography at the end of the book providing further reading suggestions make this an essential resource reference for engineers involved in litigation, forensic investigation, automotive safety, and crash reconstruction.

Tyre Recycling

2004-01-01
This is an expert overview on the topic of tire recycling. It summarizes current practices and the factors that have contributed to their growth and efficacy as viable, economically and environmentally sound methods of dealing with post-consumer tires. There are around 1 billion tires produced each year across the globe. It is estimated that for every tire sold another joins the waste stream. This publication explores innovative alternatives available to simply disposing of tires. In fact, waste tire products have many desirable properties in key application areas from thermoplastic elastomers to road surfaces. The primary area of study of this report is the EU, but reports from the US have also been cited. Statistics are incorporated from the EU markets, which illustrate changes in the industry since the inception of the European Tire Recycling Association a decade ago.
