Vehicle Compatibility in Automotive Crashes

2005-03-29
For years, reducing the number of traffic-related fatalities and injuries has been a major problem throughout the world. Today, it has gained much more momentum in view of rapidly increasing SUV, van, and light-truck populations relative to the number of passenger cars, and due to significant improvements in technologies that facilitate a better understanding of the interaction dynamics among widely differing size vehicles. Unless disparities in crashworthiness among vehicles of different masses, sizes, and structural characteristics in mixed crash environments are successfully taken into account, the challenge toward improved vehicle safety will continue. This two-part compendium provides the most comprehensive information available on the entire spectrum of vehicle crash compatibility. The first part presents oral comments captured from the 2003 SAE World Congress panel discussion on compatibility.

Transformations: Selected Works of G.B. Olson on Materials, Microstrucutre, and Design

2017-01-01
ASM International and The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society (TMS) have collaborated to present a collection of the selected works of Dr. Greg B. Olson in honor of his 70th birthday in 2017. This collection highlights his influential contributions to the understanding of martensite transformations and the development and application of a systems design approach to materials. Part I: Martensite, with an Introduction by Sir Harry Bhadeshia, emphasizes Dr. Olson's work to develop a dislocation theory for martensite transformations, to improve the understanding of the statistical nature of martensite nucleation, and to expand use of quantitative microscopy to characterize phase transformations. Part II: Materials Design, with an Introduction by Dr. Charles Kuehmann, focuses on the application of a systems design approach to materials and the development of integrated computational design curriculum for undergraduate education.

The Safety of Controllers, Sensors, and Actuators: Book 5 - Automated Vehicle Safety

2019-03-07
Safety has been ranked as the number one concern for the acceptance and adoption of automated vehicles since safety has driven some of the most complex requirements in the development of self-driving vehicles. Recent fatal accidents involving self-driving vehicles have uncovered issues in the way some automated vehicle companies approach the design, testing, verification, and validation of their products. Traditionally, automotive safety follows functional safety concepts as detailed in the standard ISO 26262. However, automated driving safety goes beyond this standard and includes other safety concepts such as safety of the intended functionality (SOTIF) and multi-agent safety. The Safety of Controllers, Sensors, and Actuators addresses the concept of safety for self-driving vehicles through the inclusion of 10 recent and highly relevent SAE technical papers.

State-of-the-Art Infrared Detector Technology

2014-01-01
Scientists, engineers, managers, and policy makers who are currently involved in the funding of infrared R&D and subsequent system design and manufacture are confronted with a choice between two competing materials technologies, HgCdTe and III-V alloys. State-of-the-Art Infrared Detector Technology examines both the current and future performance of infrared focal plane arrays that use the various device architectures associated with these two materials technologies. All spectral bands from long wavelength (LWIR) through mid-wavelength (MWIR) to short wavelength (SWIR) are considered, ultimately with a view to achieving background and diffraction-limited system performance at room temperature for all wavelengths.
