Vehicle Battery Fires: Why They Happen and How They Happen

2017-01-15
Battery Fires: Why They Happen and How They Happen was written to assist those interested in this type of incident understand how automotive fires develop, spread and the damage they cause, using both deductive and inductive reasoning. The main focus of the book resides in looking at differences in failure modes between DC and AC systems, general types of battery and electrical failure modes leading to fire, how to interpret electrical fire, determination of the primary failed part, and other skills the investigating engineer will require to perform technical failure mode analysis. However, some fires have consumed the evidence to the point where a determination cannot be made with any degree of certainty. In this instance, evidence will be quite limited, and the analysis will have its limitations and should be included in the discussion as such. In some cases, a “cause undetermined” report is all the evidence will support.

Vehicle Accident Analysis and Reconstruction Methods, Third Edition

2022-01-07
In this third edition of Vehicle Accident Analysis & Reconstruction Methods, Raymond M. Brach and R. Matthew Brach have expanded and updated their essential work for professionals in the field of accident reconstruction. Most accidents can be reconstructed effectively using calculations and investigative and experimental data: the authors present the latest scientific, engineering, and mathematical reconstruction methods, providing a firm scientific foundation for practitioners. Accidents that cannot be reconstructed using the methods in this book are rare. In recent decades, the field of crash reconstruction has been transformed through the use of technology. The advent of event data records (EDRs) on vehicles signaled the era of modern crash reconstruction, which utilizes the same physical evidence that was previously available as well as electronic data that are measured/captured before, during, and after the collision.

Ultracapacitor Applications

2011-04-15
Energy storage, and in particular electrical storage of energy, has become a very talked about topic in circles ranging from lay persons, in regard to hybrid and battery electric vehicles, to professionals, and certainly by legislators and energy policy makers. This book takes a critical look at the physical storage of electricity in the devices known collectively as electrochemical capacitors and particularly as ultracapacitors. Its 12 chapters cover ultracapacitor and advanced battery topics with an emphasis on a clear understanding of fundamental principles, models and applications. But even to professionals, the distinctions between physical and chemical forms of electric energy storage are unclear and, at times, poorly understood, if at all. The reader will appreciate the case studies from commercial to industrial to automotive applications of not only ultracapacitors, but of these power dense components in combination with energy dense battery technologies.

Tyre Recycling

2004-01-01
This is an expert overview on the topic of tire recycling. It summarizes current practices and the factors that have contributed to their growth and efficacy as viable, economically and environmentally sound methods of dealing with post-consumer tires. There are around 1 billion tires produced each year across the globe. It is estimated that for every tire sold another joins the waste stream. This publication explores innovative alternatives available to simply disposing of tires. In fact, waste tire products have many desirable properties in key application areas from thermoplastic elastomers to road surfaces. The primary area of study of this report is the EU, but reports from the US have also been cited. Statistics are incorporated from the EU markets, which illustrate changes in the industry since the inception of the European Tire Recycling Association a decade ago.
