Windshield Glare from Bus Interiors: Potential Impact on City Transit Drivers at Night

Abstract Windshield glare at night is a safety concern for all drivers. Public transit bus drivers also face another concern about glare caused by interior lighting sources originally designed for passenger safety. The extent to which interior light reflections contribute to glare is unknown. Unique methods for measuring discomfort and disability glare during bus driving were developed. An initial simulation study measured windshield luminance inside of a New Flyer D40LF diesel bus parked in a controlled, artificial, totally darkened test environment. Findings indicated significant disability glare (from elevated luminance) in the drivers’ primary field of view due to interior reflections. Any reduction in contrast would result in less prominent glare if actual driving conditions differ. To assess this, levels of windshield glare were also measured with the bus parked on the roadside under the “background glow” of the urban environment.

When and How to Apply Automatic Emergency Brakes Based on Risk Perception and Professional Driver Emergency Braking Behavior

Abstract The key issues of automatic emergency braking (AEB) control algorithm are when and how to brake. This article proposes an AEB control algorithm that integrates risk perception (RP) and emergency braking characteristics of professional drivers for rear-end collision avoidance. Using the formulated RP by time to collision (TTC) and time headway (THW), the brake trigger time can be determined. Based on the professional driver fitting (PDF) characteristic, the brake pattern can be developed. Through MATLAB/Simulink simulation platform, the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro-NCAP) test scenarios are used to verify the proposed control algorithm. The simulation results show that compared with the TTC control algorithm, PDF control algorithm, and the integrated PDF and TTC control algorithm, the proposed integrated PDF and RP control algorithm has the best performance, which can not only ensure safety and brake comfort, but also improve the road resource utilization rate.

What Can User Typologies Tell Us about Carsickness Criticality in Future Mobility Systems

Abstract Car manufacturers are continuously improving passenger comfort by advancing technologies including highly automated driving. Before the broad introduction of automated driving, specific human factors regarding passenger comfort must be considered, including motion sickness. Therefore, the identification of the frequency of motion sickness and associated factors in the population is needed to extrapolate the effects for future mobility systems. We conducted three surveys between 2015 and 2020, asking people questions about their experience with motion sickness in cars. Based on the responses of 1165 participants, gender and age showed a strong influence on the self-reported frequency of motion sickness. For deeper analysis, a logistic order regression model was used to estimate the frequency of motion sickness for different user typologies.

Water Intrusion Injuries: Occupant Kinematics and Pressure Exposure during Rearward Falls from a Personal Watercraft

Abstract Personal watercraft (PWC) users and other high-speed watersports participants have sustained rectal and vaginal injuries during falls into the water, herein referred to as water intrusion injuries (WIIs). WIIs result from the rapid introduction of water into these lower body cavities causing injury to the soft tissues of the perineum, rectum, and vagina. While case studies of injured water-skiers and PWC users are reported in the literature, there is little information related to passenger kinematics and pressure exposure during a rearward fall from a PWC. The results of an experimental study of passenger falls from two “high-performance” PWC are presented herein. A human passenger was caused to fall rearward as the PWC was accelerated at maximum throttle starting from idle speed (≈3–4 mph) and planing speeds of ≈20–30 mph. The subject passenger fell from the aft seat position and while standing on the rear platform.

Vibration-Induced Discomfort in Vehicles: A Comparative Evaluation Approach for Enhancing Comfort and Ride Quality

Abstract This article introduces a methodology for conducting comparative evaluations of vibration-induced discomfort. The aim is to outline a procedure specifically focused on assessing and comparing the discomfort caused by vibrations. The article emphasizes the metrics that can effectively quantify vibration-induced discomfort and provides insights on utilizing available information to facilitate the assessment of differences observed during the comparisons. The study also addresses the selection of appropriate target scenarios and test environments within the context of the comparative evaluation procedure. A practical case study is presented, highlighting the comparison of wheel corner concepts in the development of new vehicle architectures. Currently, the evaluation criteria and difference thresholds available allow for comparative evaluations within a limited range of vehicle vibration characteristics.

Vibration Mitigation of Commercial Vehicle Active Tandem Axle Suspension System

Abstract A tandem axle suspension is an important system to the ride comfort and vehicle stability of and road damage experience from commercial vehicles. This article introduces an investigation into the use of a controlled active tandem axle suspension, which for the first time enables more effective control using two fuzzy logic controllers (FLC). The proposed controllers compute the actuator forces based on system outputs: displacements, velocities, and accelerations of movable parts of tandem axle suspension as inputs to the controllers, in order to achieve better ride comfort and vehicle stability and extend the lifetime of road surface than the conventional passive suspension. A mathematical model of a six-degree-of-freedom (6-DOF) tandem axle suspension system is derived and simulated using Matlab/Simulink software.

Using an Inerter-Based Suspension to Reduce Carbody Flexible Vibration and Improve Riding-Comfort

Abstract The riding-comfort of high-speed trains affects the travel experience of passengers, and the lightweight design technology of the carbody increases the flexible vibration and reduces passenger comfort. To this end, a vertical dynamics model of railway vehicles is established to demonstrate the potential of using passive inerter-based suspensions to reduce the flexible vibration of the carbody and improve riding-comfort. According to the characteristics of the inerter component, an appropriate inerter-based suspension is applied to the railway vehicle to reduce low-frequency resonance. The sum of the comfort indexes of the three reference points of the carbody is optimized as the objective function to improve the passenger comfort of the whole vehicle. The results reveal that the inerter-based suspension applied to the primary or secondary suspension has different effects on vehicle vibration.

Understanding the Influence of Seat Belt Geometries on Belt-to-Pelvis Angle Can Help Prevent Submarining

Abstract The first objective of this study, addressed in Part 1, is to use finite element (FE) human body modeling (HBM) to evaluate the tangent of the Belt-to-Pelvis angle (tanθBTP) as a submarining predictor in frontal crashes for occupants in reclined seats. The second objective, addressed in Part 2, is to use this predictor to assess two technical solutions for reducing submarining risks for two different occupant anthropometries. In Part 1, tanθBTP (the lap belt penetration from the anterior superior iliac spine [ASIS] in the abdominal direction) was evaluated in impact simulations with varying seat belt anchor positions. Sled simulations with a 56 km/h full-frontal crash pulse were performed with the SAFER HBM morphed to the anthropometry of a small female and average male. A correlation was found between the submarining predictor and submarining.

Toward Unsupervised Test Scenario Extraction for Automated Driving Systems from Urban Naturalistic Road Traffic Data

Abstract Scenario-based testing is a promising approach to solving the challenge of proving the safe behavior of vehicles equipped with automated driving systems (ADS). Since an infinite number of concrete scenarios can theoretically occur in real-world road traffic, the extraction of scenarios relevant in terms of the safety-related behavior of these systems is a key aspect for their successful verification and validation. Therefore, a method for extracting multimodal urban traffic scenarios from naturalistic road traffic data in an unsupervised manner, minimizing the amount of (potentially biased) prior expert knowledge, is proposed. Rather than an (elaborate) rule-based assignment by extracting concrete scenarios into predefined functional scenarios, the presented method deploys an unsupervised machine learning pipeline. The approach allows for exploring the unknown nature of the data and their interpretation as test scenarios that experts could not have anticipated.

Torque-Vectoring Control of Autonomous Vehicles Considering Optimization of Vehicle Handling Characteristics

Abstract Distributed drive electric vehicles can apply the four-wheel differential drive to change the vehicle handling performance, which can make the connected and automated vehicles (CAV) more controllable. This article proposes a hierarchical scheme of the torque-vectoring controller (TVC), whose key parameters affecting the control objective are optimized from the human-vehicle closed-loop simulation test. First, the radial basis function (RBF)-based adaptive second-order sliding mode control (RASOSMC) for additional yaw moment generation is designed in the upper layer of the controller. The lower layer is the torque distribution strategy that takes into consideration the minimization of the tire load and the control error of the additional yaw moment and yaw rate. Afterward, the longitudinal and lateral driver model with the adaptive correction of preview time is established.

Torque and Pressure CFD Correlation of a Torque Converter

Abstract A torque converter was instrumented with 29 pressure transducers inside five cavities under study (impeller, turbine, stator, clutch cavity between the pressure plate and the turbine shell). A computer model was created to establish correlation with measured torque and pressure. Torque errors between test and simulation were within 5% and K-Factor and torque ratio errors within 2%. Turbulence intensity on the computer model was used to simulate test conditions representing transmission low and high line pressure settings. When turbulence intensity was set to 5%, pressure simulation root mean square errors were within 11%-15% for the high line pressure setting and up to 34% for low line pressure setting. When turbulence intensity was increased to 50% for the low line pressure settings, a 6% reduced root mean square error in the pressure simulations was seen.

Torque Converter Dynamic Characterization Using Torque Transmissibility Frequency Response Functions: Locked Clutch Operation

Abstract A unique torque converter test setup was used to measure the torque transmissibility frequency response function of four torque converter clutch dampers using a stepped, multi-sine-tone, excitation technique. The four torque converter clutch dampers were modeled using a lumped parameter technique, and the damper parameters of stiffness, damping, and friction were estimated using a manual, iterative parameter estimation process. The final damper parameters were selected such that the natural frequency and damping ratio of the simulated torque transmissibility frequency response functions were within 10% and 20% error, respectively, of the experimental modal parameters. This target was achieved for all but one of the tested dampers. The damper models include stiffness nonlinearities, and a speed-dependent friction torque due to centrifugal loading of the damper springs.

Time-Optimal Coordination Control for the Gear-Shifting Process in Electric-Driven Mechanical Transmission (Dog Clutch) without Impacts

Abstract Torque interruption and shift jerk are the two main problems in the gear-shifting process of electric-driven mechanical transmission (EMT). This article gives a general solution of the time-optimal coordination control to eliminate the impacts between the sleeve and the gear ring in the shortest time in analytic form. The designed coordination control is proposed to the gear-shifting process with the sleeve and the gear ring on the same shaft but can be extended to satisfy different gear-shifting processes. To obtain this method, the gear-shifting dynamic model is first built according to the two different motion sources, the drive motor and shift motor. The time-optimal dual synchronization control and position control for the drive motor and shift motor are then solved, respectively.

Time Domain Analysis of Ride Comfort and Energy Dissipation Characteristics of Automotive Vibration Proportional–Integral–Derivative Control

Abstract A time domain analysis method of ride comfort and energy dissipation characteristics is proposed for automotive vibration proportional–integral–derivative (PID) control. A two-degrees-of-freedom single wheel model for automotive vibration control is established, and the conventional vibration response variables for ride comfort evaluation and the energy consumption vibration response variables for energy dissipation characteristics evaluation are determined, and the Routh stability criterion method was introduced to assess the impact of PID control on vehicle stability. The PID control parameters are tuned using the differential evolution algorithm, and to improve the algorithm’s adaptive ability, an adaptive operator is introduced, so that the mutation factor of differential evolution algorithm can change with the number of iterations.

Theory of Collision Avoidance Capability in Automated Driving Technologies

Abstract To evaluate that automated vehicle is as safe as a human driver, a following question is studied: how does an automated vehicle react under extreme conditions close to collision? In order to understand the collision avoidance capability of an automated vehicle, we should analyze not only such post-extreme condition behavior but also pre-extreme condition behavior. We present a theory to analyze the collision avoidance capability of automated driving technologies. We also formulate a collision avoidance equation on the theory. The equation has two types of solutions: response driving plans and preparation driving plans. The response driving plans are supported by response strategy on which the vehicle reacts after detection of a hazard and they are highly efficient in terms of travel time.

Theoretical Study of Improving the Safety of the “Operator, Machine, and Environment” System when Performing Transport Operations

Abstract The article considers the issues of a systemic approach to studying safety levels in transport operations and ways to increase the safety of the operator-machine system in Russian transport. The principal and problematic issues of reducing the risk of injury by preventing traffic accidents and reducing the severity of their impact have not been sufficiently addressed. When performing transport operations, there are often disagreements between the elements of the “Operator, Machine, and Environment” technological system due to the influence of external conditions and parameters of the constantly-changing environment in the workplace. This leads to a sharp increase in the number of failures of system elements, which reduces the level of safety of transport operations.

The Utilization of Psychometric Functions to Predict Speech Intelligibility in Vehicles

Abstract In this study, a novel assessment approach of in-vehicle speech intelligibility is presented using psychometric curves. Speech recognition performance scores were modeled at an individual listener level for a set of speech recognition data previously collected under a variety of in-vehicle listening scenarios. The model coupled an objective metric of binaural speech intelligibility (i.e., the acoustic factors) with a psychometric curve indicating the listener’s speech recognition efficiency (i.e., the listener factors). In separate analyses, two objective metrics were used with one designed to capture spatial release from masking and the other designed to capture binaural loudness. The proposed approach is in contrast to the traditional approach of relying on the speech recognition threshold, the speech level at 50% recognition performance averaged across listeners, as the metric for in-vehicle speech intelligibility.

The Principles of Operation Framework: A Comprehensive Classification Concept for Automated Driving Functions

Abstract The levels of sustained vehicle automation, as recently updated by SAE in J3016 (status: 06/2018), have become common knowledge. They facilitate overall understanding of the issue. Sustained automation describes the shift in workload from purely human-driven vehicles to full automation. Duties of the driver are assigned to the machine as automation levels rise. Yet sustained driving automation does not cover “automated driving” as a whole. Automated driving functions operating on a nonsustained basis cannot be classified by means of levels describing continuous automation. Emergency braking, e.g., is obviously an intensive, but discontinuous, automation of a single task. It cannot be classified under the regime of sustained automation. The resulting lack of visibility of these important functions cannot satisfy - especially in the light of effect they take on traffic safety.

The Impact of Seat Belt Pretensioner Deployment on Forward-Leaning Occupants

Abstract Pyrotechnic seat belt pretensioners typically remove 8–15 cm of belt slack and help couple an occupant to the seat. Our study investigated pretensioner deployment on forward-leaning, live volunteers. The forward-leaning position was chosen because research indicates that passengers frequently depart from a standard sitting position. Characteristics of the 3D kinematics of forward-leaning volunteers following pretensioner deployment determines if body size is correlated with subject response. Nine adult subjects (three female), ages 18–43 years old, across a wide range of body sizes (50–120 kg) were tested. The age was limited to young, active adults as pyrotechnic pretensioners can deliver a notable force to the trunk. Subjects assumed a forward-leaning position, with 26 cm between C7 and the headrest, in a laboratory setting that replicated the passenger seat of a vehicle.

Heavy commercial vehicles consist of two parts. These are the chassis area with the equipment that allows the vehicle to move and the cabin section where the driver is located. The cabin area is the most important area that ensures the highest level of driver safety. Considering that the production of trucks is increasing day by day, it is inevitable for companies to increase their R&D activities in the field of cabin and cabin suspension systems for much safer, durable, and comfortable trucks. This study aims to determine the safe torque value of the fasteners and their assembly sequence of the Cab Suspension Console, which is one of the most important connection parts in a truck and which can cause a fatal accident by breaking.
