A Bibliographical Review of Electrical Vehicles (xEVs) Standards

Abstract This work puts presents an all-inclusive state of the art bibliographical review of all categories of electrified transportation (xEVs) standards, issued by the most important standardization organizations. Firstly, the current status for the standards by major organizations is presented followed by the graphical representation of the number of standards issued. The review then takes into consideration the interpretation of the xEVs standards developed by all the major standardization organizations across the globe. The standards are differentiated categorically to deliver a coherent view of the current status followed by the explanation of the core of these standards. The ISO, IEC, SAE, IEEE, UL, ESO, NTCAS, JARI, JIS and ARAI electrified transportation vehicles xEV Standards from USA, Europe, Japan, China and India were evaluated. A total approximated of 283 standards in the area have been issued.

A Combined Experimental and Numerical Analysis on the Aerodynamics of a Carbon-Ceramic Brake Disc

Abstract Composite ceramic brake discs are made of ceramic material reinforced with carbon fibers and offer exceptional advantages that translate directly into higher vehicle performance. In the case of an electric vehicle, it could increase the range of the vehicle, and in the case of conventional internal combustion engine vehicles, it means lower fuel consumption (and consequently lower CO2 emissions). These discs are typically characterized by complex internal geometries, further complicated by the presence of drilling holes on both friction surfaces. To estimate the aerothermal performance of these discs, and for the thermal management of the vehicle, a reliable model for predicting the air flowing across the disc channels is needed. In this study, a real carbon-ceramic brake disc with drilling holes was investigated in a dedicated test rig simulating the wheel corner flow conditions experimentally using the particle image velocimetry technique and numerically.

A Compact Electric Motor Integrated Onboard Charging System for Electric Vehicles

Abstract In this work, a three-phase integrated onboard battery charger is investigated and implemented for electric vehicle (EV) applications. A three-switch add-on interface is introduced to connect with the inverter and the motor windings, such that a two-channel interleaved boost converter is formed for the battery charging. The detailed system analysis, design methodology, and control strategy are discussed. Moreover, a simulation study is carried out to validate the effectiveness of the proposed integrated charger. As verification, a 5 kW liquid-cooled prototype is built and tested. The proposed integrated charging system achieves a power factor of 0.99, and total harmonic distortion (THD) of 4.82% at 5 kW with an efficiency of 93.2%.

A Comprehensive Analytical Switching Transients and Loss Modeling Approach with Accurate Parasitic Parameters for Enhancement-Mode Gallium Nitride Transistors

Abstract To design better power converters with enhancement-mode Gallium Nitride high-electron-mobility transistor (eGaN HEMT) for emerging applications such as Electric Vehicles (EV), it is essential to model their switching transients and loss accurately. Analytical modeling has proved to be an effective approach to study the transistor’s dynamic behaviors and analyze the switching energy loss during the turn-on and turn-off transients. Furthermore, it helps to understand the essential factors that influence the switching transients and loss calculation. The accuracy of the analytical model mainly depends on the equivalent circuits and the parasitic parameters inside the transistor packaging and external circuits under different switching stages. It is always challenging to extract the parasitic parameters accurately due to its natural character of nonlinearity and complex correlation during the switching transients.

A Coupling Capacitor Double-Resonance Topology for Electric-Field Coupled Power Transfer System Using Vehicle Tire

Abstract The electric-field coupled power transfer (ECPT) system with a coupling capacitor double-resonance circuit is proposed for electric vehicle (EV) charging. The article analyzes the plate capacitors between the EV and ground copperplate and introduces the coupling capacitor double-resonance circuit. The two-port network impedance matching of two topologies coupling capacitor double resonance is simulated, and then double side L impedance matching network and coupling capacitor double resonance with Series-Series (S-S) topology are proposed to solve the transmission efficiency decrease led by plate capacitances’ fluctuation. A prototype of the ECPT system is designed and built to prove the validity of the proposed methods. It is shown that the ECPT system realized higher than 60 W of electrical power, which is dynamic wireless transferred through the tire steel belt and the ground copperplate with at least 88% efficiency when the tires are rolling.

A Data-Driven Greenhouse Gas Emission Rate Analysis for Vehicle Comparisons

Abstract The technology focus in the automotive sector has moved toward battery electric vehicles (BEVs) over the last few years. This shift has been ascribed to the importance of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from transportation to mitigate the effects of climate change. In Europe, countries are proposing future bans on vehicles with internal combustion engines (ICEs), and individual United States (U.S.) states have followed suit. An important component of these complex decisions is the electricity generation GHG emission rates both for current electric grids and future electric grids. In this work we use 2019 U.S. electricity grid data to calculate the geographically and temporally resolved marginal emission rates that capture the real-world carbon emissions associated with present-day utilization of the U.S. grid for electric vehicle (EV) charging or any other electricity need.

A Direct Yaw-Moment Control Logic for an Electric 2WD Formula SAE Using an Error-Cube Proportional Derivative Controller

Abstract A Direct Yaw-Moment Control (DYC) logic for a rear-wheel-drive electric-powered vehicle is proposed. The vehicle is a Formula SAE (FSAE) type race car, with two electric motors powering each rear wheel. Vehicle baseline balance is neutral at low speeds, for increased maneuverability, and increases understeering at high speeds (due to the aerodynamic configuration) for stability. A controller that can deal with these yaw response variations, modelling uncertainties, and vehicle nonlinear behavior at limit handling is proposed. A two-level control strategy is considered. For the upper level, yaw rate and sideslip angle are considered as feedback control variables and a cubic-error Proportional Derivative (PD) controller is proposed for the feedback control. For the lower level, a traction control algorithm is used, together with the yaw moment requirement, for torque allocation.

A Fast Permanent Magnet Width Determination Method for Multiple-Layer Flux-Barrier Permanent Magnet-Assisted Reluctance Machines

Abstract In order to maximize the reluctance torque component, multiple-layer flux barriers are usually employed in permanent magnet-assisted synchronous reluctance (PMAREL) motors. However, the permanent magnet (PM) dimension of each layer should be carefully designed to achieve the best performance with the minimum PM material. This article investigates this issue and proposes a method to define the PM width according to the sinusoidal no-load airgap flux density distribution. First, the accuracy of the no-load magnetic circuit for airgap flux density calculation is verified with finite element analysis (FEA), considering single or multiple flux-barriers per pole. The effects of the location, width, and thickness of the PM are investigated separately. Then the PM width is derived by the equations developed from the no-load magnetic circuit. The proposed method reduces both the PM mass and the torque ripple.

A Hybrid System and Method for Estimating State of Charge of a Battery

Abstract This article proposes a novel approach of a hybrid system of physics and data-driven modeling for accurately estimating the state of charge (SOC) of a battery. State of Charge (SOC) is a measure of the remaining battery capacity and plays a significant role in various vehicle applications like charger control and driving range predictions. Hence the accuracy of the SOC is a major area of interest in the automotive sector. The method proposed in this work takes the state-of-the-art practice of Kalman filter (KF) and merges it with intelligent capabilities of machine learning using neural networks (NNs). The proposed hybrid system comprises a physics-based battery model and a plurality of NNs eliminating the need for the conventional KF while retaining its features of the predictor-corrector mechanism of the variables to reduce the errors in estimation.

A Lookup Table-Based Reference Flux Linkage Selection of Direct Torque Control Induction Motor Drive for Electric Vehicle Applications: An Offline Strategy

Abstract In recent years, countries worldwide have framed policies for faster adoption of electric vehicles. To meet the requirements of electric vehicles, research activities in academia as well as in industry have intensified. One of the significant areas of research is low-cost and high-efficiency electric drive for these vehicles, and their control over a wide range of operations. In this article, an electric vehicle drive with direct torque control of induction motor is presented. This article addresses the impact of reference flux linkage on the operation of induction motor for direct torque control over a wide speed range. A nonlinear equivalent circuit model of an induction motor is considered to obtain values of reference flux linkage. The method uses the nonlinear equivalent circuit parameters to do the offline calculation to determine the reference flux linkage, and a lookup table is generated.

A Method for Measuring In-Plane Forming Limit Curves Using 2D Digital Image Correlation

Abstract With the introduction of advanced lightweight materials with complex microstructures and behaviors, more focus is put on the accurate determination of their forming limits, and that can only be possible through experiments as the conventional theoretical models for the forming limit curve (FLC) prediction fail to perform. Despite that, CAE engineers, designers, and toolmakers still rely heavily on theoretical models due to the steep costs associated with formability testing, including mechanical setup, a large number of tests, and the cost of a stereo digital image correlation (DIC) system. The international standard ISO 12004-2:2021 recommends using a stereo DIC system for formability testing since two-dimensional (2D) DIC systems are considered incapable of producing reliable strains due to errors associated with out-of-plane motion and deformation.

A Mid-fidelity Model in the Loop Feasibility Study for Implementation of Regenerative Antilock Braking System in Electric Vehicles

Abstract The tailpipe zero-emission legislation has pushed the automotive industry toward more electrification. Regenerative braking is the capability of electric machines to provide brake torque. So far, the regenerative braking feature is primarily considered due to its effect on energy efficiency. However, using individual e-machines for each wheel makes it possible to apply the antilock braking function due to the fast torque-tracking characteristics of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM). Due to its considerable cost reduction, in this article, a feasibility study is carried out to investigate if the ABS function can be done purely through regenerative braking using a mid-fidelity model-based approach. An uni-tire model of the vehicle with a surface-mount PMSM (SPMSM) model is used to verify the idea. The proposed ABS control system has a hierarchical structure containing a high-level longitudinal slip controller and a low-level SPMSM torque controller.

A Model Reference Adaptive Controller for an Electric Motor Thermal Management System in Autonomous Vehicles

Abstract Technological advancements and growth in electric motors and battery packs enable vehicle propulsion electrifications, which minimize the need for fossil fuel consumption. The mobility shift to electric motors creates a demand for an efficient electric motor thermal management system that can accommodate heat dissipation needs with minimum power requirements and noise generation. This study proposes an intelligent hybrid cooling system that includes a gravity-aided passive cooling solution coupled with a smart supplementary liquid cooling system. The active cooling system contains a radiator, heat sink, variable frequency drive, alternating current (AC) fan, direct current (DC) pump, and real-time controller. A complete nonlinear mathematical model is developed using a lumped parameter approach to estimate the optimum fan and pump operations at each control interval.

A Multi-Physics Design Approach for Electromagnetic and Stress Performance Improvement in an Interior Permanent Magnet Motor

Abstract Electric motors constitute a critical component of an electric vehicle powertrain. An improved motor design can help improve the overall performance of the drivetrain of an electric vehicle making it more compact and power dense. In this article, the electromagnetic torque output of a double V-shaped traction IPMSM is maximized by geometry optimization, while considering overall material cost minimization as the second objective. A robust and flexible parametric model of the IPMSM is developed in ANSYS Maxwell 2D. Various parameters are defined in the rotor and stator geometries to perform an effective multi-objective parametric design optimization. Advanced sensitivity analysis, surrogate modeling, and optimization capabilities of ANSYS optiSlang software are leveraged in the optimization. Furthermore, a demagnetization analysis is performed to evaluate the robustness of the optimized design.

A Neural Network-Based Regression Study for a Hybrid Battery Thermal Management System under Fast Charging

Abstract Fast charging is significant for the driving convenience of an electric vehicle (EV). However, this technology causes lithium (Li)-ion batteries’ massive heat generation under such severe current rates. To ensure the thermal performance and lifespan of a Li-ion battery module under fast charging, an artificial neural network (ANN) regression method is proposed for a hybrid phase change material (PCM)—liquid coolant-based battery thermal management system (BTMS) design. Two ANN regression models are trained based on experimental data considering two targets: maximum temperature (Tmax ) and temperature standard deviation (TSD) of the hybrid cooling-based battery module. The regression accuracy reaches 99.942% and 99.507%, respectively. Four sets of experimental data are employed to validate the reliability of this method, and the cooling effect (Tmax and TSD) of the hybrid BTMS are predicted using the trained ANN regression models.

A New Approach of Antiskid Braking System (ABS) via Disk Pad Position Control (PPC) Method

Abstract A classical antiskid brake system (ABS) is typically used to control the brake fluid pressure by creating repeated cycles of decreasing and increasing brake force to avoid wheel locking, causing the fluctuation of the brake hydraulic pressure and resulting in vibration during wheel rotation. This article proposes a new approach of skid control for ABS by controlling the disk pad position. This new approach involves using a modest control method to determine the optimal skid that allows the wheel to exert maximum friction force for decelerating the vehicle by shifting the brake pad position instead of modulating the brake fluid pressure. This pad position control (PPC) method works in a continuous manner. Therefore, no rapid changes are required in the brake pressure and wheel rotation speed. To identify the PPC braking performance, braking test simulations and experiments have been carried out.

A Novel Fitting Method of Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy for Lithium-Ion Batteries Based on Random Mutation Differential Evolution Algorithm

Abstract Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is widely used to diagnose the state of health (SOH) of lithium-ion batteries. One of the essential steps for the diagnosis is to analyze EIS with an equivalent circuit model (ECM) to understand the changes of the internal physical and chemical processes. Due to numerous equivalent circuit elements in the ECM, existing parameter identification methods often fail to meet the requirements in terms of identification accuracy or convergence speed. Therefore, this article proposes a novel impedance model parameter identification method based on the random mutation differential evolution (RMDE) algorithm. Compared with methods such as nonlinear least squares, it does not depend on the initial values of the parameters. The method is compared with chaos particle swarm optimization (CPSO) algorithm and genetic algorithm (GA), showing advantages in many aspects.

A Review Paper on Recent Research of Noise and Vibration in Electric Vehicle Powertrain Mounting System

Abstract The Noise, Vibration, and Harshness (NVH) performance of automotive powertrain (PT) mounts involves the PT source vibration, PT mount stiffness, road input, and overall transfer path design. Like safety, performance, and durability driving dynamics, vehicle-level NVH also plays a major contributing factor for electric vehicle (EV) refinement. This article highlights the recent research on PT mounting-related NVH controls on electric cars. This work’s main contribution lies in the comparative study of the internal combustion engine (ICE)-based PT mounting and EV-based PT mounting system (PMS) with specific EV challenges. Various literature on PT mounts from the passive, semi-active, and active mounting systems are studied. The parameter optimization technique for mount stiffness and location by various research papers is summarized to understand the existing methodologies and research gap in EV application.

A Review and Outlook on Energy Consumption Estimation Models for Electric Vehicles

Abstract Electric vehicles (EVs) are critical to the transition to a low-carbon transportation system. The successful adoption of EVs heavily depends on energy consumption models that can accurately and reliably estimate electricity consumption. This article reviews the state of the art of EV energy consumption models, aiming to provide guidance for the future development of EV applications. We summarize influential variables of EV energy consumption in four categories: vehicle component, vehicle dynamics, traffic, and environment-related factors. We classify and discuss EV energy consumption models in terms of modeling scale (microscopic vs. macroscopic) and methodology (data driven vs. rule based). Our review shows trends of increasing macroscopic models that can be used to estimate trip-level EV energy consumption and increasing data-driven models that utilize machine learning technologies to estimate EV energy consumption based on a large volume of real-world data.
