μ-CT Investigation into the Impact of a Fuel-Borne Catalyst Additive on the Filtration Efficiency and Backpressure of Gasoline Particulate Filters

Abstract An investigation into the pre-ashing of new gasoline particulate filters (GPFs) has demonstrated that the filtration efficiency of such filters can be improved by up to 30% (absolute efficiency improvement) when preconditioned using ash derived from a fuel-borne catalyst (FBC) additive. The additive is typically used in diesel applications to enable diesel particulate filter (DPF) regeneration and can be added directly into the fuel tank of the vehicle. This novel result was compared with ash derived from lube oil componentry, which has previously been shown to improve filtration efficiency in GPFs. The lube oil-derived ash utilized in this work improved the filtration efficiency of the GPF by −30%, comparable to the ash derived from the FBC additive.

Visualization and Statistical Analysis of Passive Pre-chamber Knock in a Constant-volume Optical Engine

Abstract This study investigates the behavior of pre-chamber knock in comparison to traditional spark ignition engine knock, using a modified constant-volume gasoline engine with an optically accessible piston. The aim is to provide a deeper understanding of pre-chamber knock combustion and its potential for mitigating knock. Five passive pre-chambers with different nozzle diameters, volumes, and nozzle numbers were tested, and nitrogen dilution was varied from 0% to 10%. The stochastic nature of knock behavior necessitates the use of statistical methods, leading to the proposal of a high-frequency band-pass filter (37–43 kHz) as an alternative pre-chamber knock metric. Pre-chamber knock combustion was found to exhibit fewer strong knock cycles compared to SI engines, indicating its potential for mitigating knock intensity. High-speed images revealed pre-chamber knock primarily occurs near the liner, where end-gas knock is typically exhibited.

Vibration Response Properties in Frame Hanging Catalyst Muffler

Abstract Dynamic stresses exist in parts of a catalyst muffler caused by the vibration of a moving vehicle, and it is important to clarify and predict the vibration response properties for preventing fatigue failures. Assuming a vibration isolating installation in the vehicle frame, the vibration transmissibility and local dynamic stress of the catalyst muffler were examined through a vibration machine. Based on the measured data and by systematically taking vibration theories into consideration, a new prediction method of the vibration modes and parameters was proposed that takes account of vibration isolating and damping. A lumped vibration model with the six-element and one mass point was set up, and the vibration response parameters were analyzed accurately from equations of motion. In the vibration test, resonance peaks from the hanging bracket, rubber bush, and muffler parts were confirmed in three excitation drives, and local stress peaks were coordinate with them as well.

Validation of Kinetic Mechanisms against Various Ignition Delay Data and the Development of Ignition Delay Correlations for Ethanol, Natural Gas, and Primary Reference Fuel Blends under Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition Conditions

Abstract Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) is a promising advanced combustion concept with high efficiencies and low emissions. Chemical kinetic mechanisms and ignition delay correlations (IDCs) are often applied to simulate HCCI combustion. However, a large number of mechanisms and correlations are not developed specifically for HCCI conditions, i.e., lean mixtures and usually with significant residual gas fractions (RGF). To address this issue, a two-part study is conducted. First, experimental ignition delay time (IDT) data from literature under typical HCCI conditions is collected. Then, thirteen widely applied mechanisms for ethanol, natural gas, and primary reference fuel (PRF) blends of isooctane and n-heptane are validated by running constant-volume simulations. Their performance and accuracy are evaluated. Second, the mechanism with the highest accuracy for each fuel is used to generate IDCs for HCCI conditions.

Using Numerical Simulation to Obtain Length of Constant Area Section in Scramjet Combustor

Abstract Constant area section length downstream to the fuel injection point is a crucial dimension of scramjet duct geometry. It has a major contribution in creating the maximum effective pressure inside the combustor that is required for propulsion. The length is limited by the thermal choking phenomenon, which occurs when heat is added in a flow through constant area duct. As per theory, to avoid thermal choking the constant area section length depends upon the inlet conditions and the rate of heat addition. The complexity related to mixing and combustion process inside the supersonic stream makes it difficult to predict the rate of heat addition and in turn the length. Recent efforts of simulating the reacting flow inside scramjet combustors are encouraging and can be useful in this regard. The presented work attempts to use simulation results of scramjet combustion for predicting the constant area section length for a typical scramjet combustor.

Use of Artificial Neural Network to Develop Surrogates for Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil with Experimental Validation in Ignition Quality Tester

Abstract This article presents surrogate mixtures that simulate the physical and chemical properties in the auto-ignition of hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO). Experimental investigation was conducted in the Ignition Quality Tester (IQT) to validate the auto-ignition properties with respect to those of the target fuel. The surrogate development approach is assisted by artificial neural network (ANN) embedded in MATLAB optimization function. Aspen HYSYS is used to calculate the key physical and chemical properties of hundreds of mixtures of representative components, mainly alkanes—the dominant components of HVO, to train the learning algorithm. Binary and ternary mixtures are developed and validated in the IQT. The target properties include the derived cetane number (DCN), density, viscosity, surface tension, molecular weight, and volatility represented by the distillation curve. The developed surrogates match the target fuel in terms of ignition delay and DCN within 6% error range.

Understanding the Origin of Cycle-to-Cycle Variation Using Large-Eddy Simulation: Similarities and Differences between a Homogeneous Low-Revving Speed Research Engine and a Production DI Turbocharged Engine

Abstract A numerical study using large-eddy simulations (LES) to reproduce and understand sources of cycle-to-cycle variation (CCV) in spark-initiated internal combustion engines (ICEs) is presented. Two relevantly different spark-ignition (SI) units, that is, a homogeneous-charge slow-speed single-cylinder research unit (the transparent combustion chamber (TCC)-III, Engine 1) and a stratified-charge high-revving speed gasoline direct injection (GDI) (Engine 2) one, are analyzed in fired operations. Multiple-cycle simulations are carried out for both engines and LES results well reproduce the experimentally measured combustion CCV. A correlation study is carried out, emphasizing the decisive influence of the early flame period variability (1% of mass fraction burnt (MFB1)) on the entire combustion event in both ICEs. The focus is moved onto the early flame characteristics, and the crucial task to determine the dominant causes of its variability (if any) is undertaken.

Uncertainty Assessment of Octane Index Framework for Stoichiometric Knock Limits of Co-Optima Gasoline Fuel Blends

Abstract This study evaluates the applicability of the Octane Index (OI) framework under conventional spark ignition (SI) and “beyond Research Octane Number (RON)” conditions using nine fuels operated under stoichiometric, knock-limited conditions in a direct injection spark ignition (DISI) engine, supported by Monte Carlo-type simulations which interrogate the effects of measurement uncertainty. Of the nine tested fuels, three fuels are “Tier III” fuel blends, meaning that they are blends of molecules which have passed two levels of screening, and have been evaluated to be ready for tests in research engines. These molecules have been blended into a four-component gasoline surrogate at varying volume fractions in order to achieve a RON rating of 98. The molecules under consideration are isobutanol, 2-butanol, and diisobutylene (which is a mixture of two isomers of octene). The remaining six fuels were research-grade gasolines of varying formulations.

Turbulent Flow Pressure Losses in Gasoline Particulate Filters

Abstract Gasoline Particulate Filter (GPF) technology is the key method of meeting the new regulations for particulate matter emissions from gasoline cars. Computer-Aided Engineering is widely used for the design of such systems; thus the development of accurate models for GPFs is crucial. Most existing pressure loss models require experimental calibration of several parameters. These experiments are performed at room temperatures, or on an engine test bench, where gas properties cannot be fully controlled. This article presents pressure loss measurements for clean GPF cores performed with uniform airflow and temperatures up to 680°C. The flow regime in GPF is shown to be different to that in the Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) due to high flow rates and temperatures. Therefore, most of the existing models are not suitable for design of the new generation of aftertreatment devices. To separate pressure loss contribution from different sources, unplugged filter cores are tested.

Transient Response of Turbocharged Compression Ignition Engine under Different Load Conditions

Abstract In urban roads the engine speed and the load vary suddenly and frequently, resulting in increased exhaust emissions. In such operations, the effect of air injection technique to access the transient response of the engine is of great interest. The effectiveness of air injection technique in improving the transient response under speed transient is investigated in detail [1]; however, it is not evaluated for the load transients. Load step demand of the engine is another important event that limits the transient response of the turbocharger. In the present study, response of a heavy-duty turbocharged diesel engine is investigated for different load conditions. Three cases of load transients are considered: constant load, load magnitude variation, and load scheduling. Air injection technique is simulated and after optimization of injection pressure based on orifice diameter, its effect on the transient response is presented.

Transient Operation and Over-Dilution Mitigation for Low-Pressure EGR Systems in Spark-Ignition Engines

Abstract Low-Pressure cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (LP-cEGR) is proven to be an effective technology for fuel efficiency improvement in turbocharged spark-ignition (SI) engines. Aiming to fully exploit the EGR benefits, new challenges are introduced that require more complex and robust control systems and strategies. One of the most important restrictions of LP-cEGR is the transient response, since long air-EGR flow paths introduce significant transport delays between the EGR valve and the cylinders. High dilution generally increases efficiency, but can lead to cycle-by-cycle combustion variation. Especially in SI engines, higher-than-requested EGR dilution may lead to combustion instabilities and misfires. Considering the long EGR evacuation period, one of the most challenging transient events is throttle tip-out, where the engine operation shifts from a high-load point with high dilution tolerance to a low-load point where EGR tolerance is significantly reduced.

Tooth Time-Based Engine Misfire Detection Index for Multicylinder Engines of Vehicles Not Affected by Various Deviations between Cylinders

Abstract This article proposes a new misfire detection index, the ΔGap slope, for a four-cylinder engine. However, the proposed index is not limited to four-cylinder engines. The ΔGap slope uses the tooth time measured using the existing crankshaft position sensor; therefore, an additional sensor is not required, which makes it economical. The ΔGap slope is defined as the difference between the gap slopes of the same cylinder for two adjacent cycles. Various factors that cause deviations in gap slopes between cylinders can be eliminated in the process of determining the difference between two gap slopes. Hence, in contrast with the existing engine roughness method, the ΔGap slope has the advantage of not requiring compensation for deviations between the cylinders. The conventional gap slope method must use different sets of thresholds for each cylinder located at the same position on the sensor wheel, which results in multiple thresholds being applied.

Throat Unit Collector Modeling of Gasoline Particulate Filter Performance

Abstract The wide application of Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engines and the increasingly stringent Particulate Matter (PM) and Particulate Number (PN) regulations make Gasoline Particulate Filters (GPFs) with high filtration efficiency and low pressure drop highly desirable. However, due to the specifics of GDI operation and GDI PM, the design of these filters is even more challenging as compared to their diesel counterparts. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) studies have been shown to be an effective way to investigate filter performance. In particular, our previous two-dimensional (2D) CFD study explicated the pore size and pore-size distribution effects on GPF filtration efficiency and pressure drop. The “throat unit collector” model developed in this study furthers this work in order to characterize the GPF wall microstructure more precisely.

Thermodynamic Energy and Exergy Analysis of Low-Temperature Combustion Strategies

Abstract Increasing thermal and fuel efficiency in Internal Combustion Engines (ICEs) requires thorough investigations on the combustion process and its thermodynamics. The first law of thermodynamics expresses the balance of the energy, while the second law specifies the maximum achievable work. In this article, Low-Temperature Combustion (LTC) strategies, including Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI), Reactivity Controlled Compression Ignition (RCCI), Partially Premixed Combustion (PPC), and Direct Dual-Fuel Stratification (DDFS) were analyzed by the first and second law approaches, and they were compared with ideal-diesel cycle and Conventional Diesel Combustion (CDC). HCCI and RCCI had the highest exergy efficiency of 50.8% and 49.2%, respectively, compared to other cases, and exergy destruction in these cases was the lowest (25.3% and 27.5%, respectively).

Thermal Energy Performance Evaluation and Architecture Selection for Off-Highway Equipment

Abstract An accurate and rapid thermal model of an axle-brake system is crucial to the design process of reliable braking systems. Proper thermal management is necessary to avoid damaging effects, such as brake fade, thermal cracking, and lubricating oil degradation. In order to understand the thermal effects inside of a lubricated braking system, it is common to use Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to calculate the heat generation and rejection. However, this is a difficult and time-consuming process, especially when trying to optimize a braking system. This article uses the results from several CFD runs to train a Stacked Ensemble Model (SEM), which allows the use of machine learning (ML) to predict the systems’ temperature based on several input design parameters. The robustness of the SEM was evaluated using uncertainty quantification.

Abstract Off-highway equipment are subjected to diverse environmental conditions, severe duty cycles, and multiple simultaneous operations. Due to its continuous, high-power adverse operating conditions, equipment are exposed to high thermal loads, which result in the deterioration of its performance and efficiency. This article describes a model-based system simulation approach for thermal performance evaluation of a self-propelled off-highway vehicle. The objective of developing the simulation model including thermal fidelity is to quantify the impact of thermal loads on vehicular system/subsystems performance. This article also describes the use of simulation models for driving architectural design decisions and virtual test replication in all stages of product development.

The Use of Canola Oil, n-Hexane, and Ethanol Mixtures in a Diesel Engine

Abstract Environmental protection and the depletion of nonrenewable energy sources necessitate the search for the replacement of, among others, diesel fuel (Df) in diesel engines with renewable fuel without major structural changes. For this reason, vegetable oils are of interest as a possible fuel for this type of engine. Unfortunately, the physicochemical properties of vegetable oils differ significantly from Df. In addition to the boiling and freezing points, these properties include viscosity, density, and surface tension as well as wetting properties. For this reason, an attempt was made to modify these properties by adding n-hexane (Hex) and ethanol (Et) to canola oil (Co). The viscosity, density, surface tension, and wetting properties of Hex and Et are significantly different from those for Co.

The Synergies of Valve Overlap Reduction and External Exhaust Gas Recirculation Dilution at Boosted Loads of a Downsized Gasoline Turbo Direct Injection Engine

Abstract Uncertainty of fuel reserves, environmental crisis, and health concerns arise from transport demands and reliance on fossil fuels. Downsized gasoline turbocharged direct injection (GTDI) engines have been developed and applied to most modern gasoline vehicles, delivering superior efficiency in high-load operation, reduced friction, and weight. But fuel enrichment and late combustion phasing to mitigate knocking combustion have hindered the efficiency benefits at higher loads with high boost. Furthermore, the wide valve-overlap with a three-cylinder setup for the maximum scavenging efficiency produces bursts of short-circuit (SC) air to cause underestimation of the equivalence ratio by the oxygen sensor, resulting in higher tailpipe nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions with three-way catalyst (TWC) exhaust aftertreatment. Reducing the valve overlap to limit short-circuiting and enrichment will recover the combustion efficiency and the engine ER, but at the cost of high knock onset.

The Key Role of Advanced, Flexible Fuel Injection Systems to Match the Future CO2 Targets in an Ultra-Light Mid-Size Diesel Engine

Abstract The article describes the results achieved in developing a new diesel combustion system for passenger car application that, while capable of high power density, delivers excellent fuel economy through a combination of mechanical and thermodynamic efficiencies improvement. The project stemmed from the idea that, by leveraging the high fuel injection pressure of last generation common rail systems, it is possible to reduce the engine peak firing pressure (pfp) with great benefits on reciprocating and rotating components’ light-weighting and friction for high-speed light-duty engines, while keeping the power density at competitive levels. To this aim, an advanced injection system concept capable of injection pressure greater than 2500 bar was coupled to a prototype engine featuring newly developed combustion system. Then, the matching among these features has been thoroughly experimentally examined.

The Impact of Miller Valve Timing on Combustion and Charging Performance of an Ethanol- and Methanol-Fueled Heavy-Duty Spark Ignition Engine

Abstract Combustion engines and liquid fuels are likely to continue playing a central role in freight transportation with renewable fuels reducing carbon emissions. Ethanol and methanol are future renewable fuels with a knock resistance that make them suitable for heavy-duty (HD) spark ignition (SI) engines. This simulation work focuses on the potential for improving the efficiency of an ethanol- and methanol-fueled HD SI engine using early intake valve closing Miller valve timing. With Miller valve timing, the expansion ratio and thermodynamic efficiency can be increased while maintaining the same effective compression ratio. However, Miller timing requires increased boost pressure to retain the same trapped air mass and also suffers from reduced in-cylinder turbulence.
