Small Craft - Marine Propulsion Engine and Systems - Power Measurements and Declarations

2016-04-06
CURRENT
J1228_201604
This SAE Standard specifies the test requirements in addition to those given in ISO 3046-1 for determining the power, at a single point or as a power curve, of marine propulsion engines or systems for recreational craft and other small craft using similar propulsion equipment of less than 24 m length of the hull. It also provides the means for documenting and checking the declared (rated) power published by the manufacturer.

STATIONARY SOUND LEVEL MEASUREMENT PROCEDURE FOR PLEASURE MOTORBOATS

1991-12-01
HISTORICAL
J2005_199112
This SAE Recommended Practice establishes the procedure for determining if pleasure motorboats have effective exhaust muffling means when operating in the stationary mode. It is intended as a guide toward standard practice and is subject to change to keep pace with experience and technical advances.

Operator Sound Pressure Level Exposure Measurement Procedure for Powered Recreational Craft

2009-08-21
HISTORICAL
J1281_200908
This SAE Standard establishes the procedure for determining the operator duty cycle sound pressure level Lodc to which operators of powered recreational craft up to 24 m in length are exposed during typical operation as determined by marine engine duty cycle studies. This document describes the instrumentation, the required calibration procedures, the test site, the specifications for “standard craft”, the craft operating conditions, microphone positioning, test procedure, engine speeds for each of the Duty Cycle modes and the formula and table for calculating the Duty Cycle operator ear sound pressure level. This document is subject to change to keep pace with technical advances as well as other international standards and practices. Changes in this Revision: The sound pressure level measurements performed while applying this document are based on the Five-Mode Marine Engine Duty Cycle instead of a single engine speed.

Marine Control Cable Connection—Engine Throttle Lever

2008-04-14
HISTORICAL
J961_200804
The purpose of this SAE Recommended Practice is to provide guides toward standard conditions for operating marine engine throttles (gasoline or diesel) where push-pull cable control is applicable. For control cable information see SAE J917. a Maximum desirable force required to make or maintain a throttle setting, 22 N (5 lb), as applied by the control cable. b Amount of travel required for the engine throttle lever is as follows: 1 Two holes in the engine throttle lever at radii to provide 44.5 mm (1-3/4 in) and 70 mm (2-3/4 in) linear travel, idle to full throttle. 2 The engine throttle lever may be adjustable in length. c The holes in the engine throttle lever for attaching the cable terminal should be 6.35 mm (1/4 in) diameter. The engine throttle lever at these holes should not be more than 6.35 mm (1/4 in) thick.

Marine Control Cable Connection—Engine Clutch Lever

HISTORICAL
J960_200804
The purpose of this SAE Recommended Practice is to provide guides toward standard conditions for operating marine hydraulic transmissions where push-pull cable control is applicable. For control cable information see SAE J917. a Provide suitable detents at forward, neutral, and reverse positions. Approximately 22 N (5 lb) of cable force are required to move the engine clutch lever out of the detent positions. b Provide an engine clutch lever with a 6.35 mm (1/4 in) diameter hole at a radius to provide 70 mm (2-3/4 in) linear travel from forward to reverse, with neutral at the center. The engine clutch lever (at 6.35 mm [1/4 in] diameter hole) to have 6.35 mm (1/4 in) maximum thickness. Common cable terminals used are ball joints, clevises, and pivots. c Provide clear cable path to engine clutch lever. d Provide choice of cable paths from different angles. This can be done by providing a sector type of lever with a series of holes equidistant from the centerline of the shaft.
