“Dynamic Analysis of Cabin Tilting System of Heavy Trucks Using ADAMS-View for Development of a Software Interface for Optimization”

2008-10-07
2008-01-2683
Design of a Cabin Tilting System of heavy trucks, a multi degree of freedom mechanism, is a challenge. Factors like adequate tilting angle, cabin styling, packaging, non interference of tilting system with ride comfort, forces in the system, specifications of the hydraulic system, are all very important for designing the system. Numerous considerations make the design process highly iterative hence longer design time. This paper primarily focuses on Kinematics and Dynamic analysis of the system in ADAMS and validation of system with real time testing results. Intention of this work is to make a parametric ADAMS model and link it to a Knowledge Based Engineering application to facilitate designer to quickly carry out design iterations for reducing development time. The Knowledge Based Engineering software is made using object oriented language called ‘Object Definition Language’ which has been developed using C and C++ software languages.

Why You Should Use Web Based Learning for CAD Training in Your Organization

2013-09-24
2013-01-2439
Since 1992, Caterpillar has invested millions of dollars to purchase CAD software, and spends nearly $2M per year keeping its engineers up-to-date, via instructor lead training (ILT), as new enhancements are introduced. Periodic upgrades to the software also require huge resource (people, costs) commitments for the planning and execution of the training requirements required for a large global workforce. This paper will examine gaps uncovered in the efficiency and effectiveness of the current training process, and the cultural change required as a result of switching from an instructor led environment to a completely web-based solution, which, once deployed, had promised to change the way Caterpillar approached training for the future. The proposed change promised to improve human resource capability by utilizing new technological capabilities, and resulted in improvements in organizational capabilities as well.

Financial planners are always anxious to assist engineers and scientists in making retirement decisions. Many engineers, especially Industrial Engineers (IE), have had courses that provide the knowledge to make these retirement financial plans themselves. This paper will provide a method of estimating retirement needs utilizing Excel software and IE college coursework.

Virtual Validation - A New Paradigm in Controls Engineering

2013-09-24
2013-01-2404
It is not news anymore when somebody talks about increasing software content in today's vehicles, transportation systems and machinery. The software content and complexity has grown so tremendously and rapidly that even the most advanced product/software development techniques leave more to desire in view of evolving product life-cycles, feature content and need for development efficiency. Model-Based Design (MBD) techniques and V-Cycle based development processes address the significant need for managing complexity, and to some extent, efficiency in product development. Further efficiency in the development process can be achieved by enabling virtual validation of software components. The virtual validation environment for software not only has the ability to run the software component as a standalone unit for performance validation, but is also extended to the validation of the performance of the entire embedded software of an ECU, multiple ECUs and the entire system.

Virtual Software-In-Loop (Closed Loop) Simulation Setup during Software Development

2022-10-05
2022-28-0384
Simulation of real time situations is a time tested software validation methodology in the automotive industry and array of simulation technologies have been in use for decades and is widely accepted and been part & parcel of software development cycle. While software that is being developed needs detailed plan, architecture and detailed design, it also matters during its development that, it is built in the right way from the very beginning and is fine tuned constantly. Especially for Software-In-Loop simulation (SIL), plenty of practices/tools/techniques/data are being used for simulation of system/software behavior. When it comes to choosing the right simulation technique and tools to be adopted, often there are discussions revolve around cost, feasibility, effectiveness, man-power, scalability, reusability etc.

Vickers Discovery Series EMV Electrohydraulic Mobile Valve is one of the most advanced new products introduced by Vickers in 1996. The EMV is a four-way proportional flow control valve intended for Load Sensing systems. The concept is based on separated meter-in and meter-out valve elements in combination with several new technologies such as Valvistor, Anti-Saturation, Meter-in and Meter-out Pressure Control. The valve is microprocessor controlled, programmable and communicates via a CAN-Bus. The valve could easily be specified with an interactive Windows based configuration software.

Vibration of a Sliding Vane Impacting on the Stator in a Rotary Compressor

2008-10-07
2008-01-2720
This study analyzes vibration of a sliding vane impacting on a stator in a rotary compressor. The impact of the vane on the stator is analyzed by simulating a shell impact. Two-dimension plane strain approach is used to derive governing equations and the finite element method is used to determine natural frequencies and vibratory modes of a vane. The calculated results are compared and show good agreement with those obtained by using ABAQUS software. The vibratory amplitude of the vane in the first mode is larger than other modes. Therefore, the first vibratory mode shape with the natural frequency of 976 Hz and the maximum vibratory amplitude of 0.012 mm is the most important mode for consideration.

Vehicle Interconnected Suspension System based on Hydraulic Electromagnetic Energy Harvest: Design, Modeling and Simulation Tests

2014-09-30
2014-01-2299
To integrate the energy-recovery characteristic of the Hydraulic electromagnetic shock absorber (HESA) and the anti-roll characteristic and anti-pitch characteristic of Hydraulic Interconnected Suspension(HIS), a Hydraulic Interconnected Suspension system based on Hydraulic Electromagnetic Shock Absorber (HESA-HIS) is presented. HESA-HIS has three operating modes: energy-recovery priority mode, dynamic performance priority mode and energy-recovery and dynamic performance balance mode. The working principle of HESA-HIS in the three operating modes is introduced, a full vehicle model is built by using the software AMESim, and some simulation tests are conducted by using the vehicle model. The simulation results show that the system can effectively reduce the roll angle of the vehicle, while maintaining good ride performance. Fishhook test results show that the roll angle of the HESA-HIS vehicle is reduced by 80%, compared to the traditional vehicle.
