Yielding Strengh Analysis for Self Supported Pressure Vessels

2002-11-19
2002-01-3479
The hazardous bulk chemical liquid cargo transportation is usually made through highways, using special automotive devices, named semitrailer tank, a kind of mobile tank specially developed to perform this task, manufactured with many types of steel, selected according to the chemical characteristics of the product to be transported. Equipment sizing is made based on specific standards which include specified formulas, loading, and safety factors representing the design criteria of this type of device. Despite of the detailed design criteria for semitrailer tank, it has been observed failure of some pieces of equipment during operation, in a shorter effective life than that one considered in the design phase itself. Considering a detailed study of the stress distribution in this type of equipment, this paper shows a verification of the possibility of yielding failure in the semitrailer tank structure.

Winterization of Commercial Vehicles to -50 F

1970-02-01
700709
The development trend in construction machinery has been to produce equipment having a high level of reliability. The dollar loss that occurs when a major piece of equipment breaks down on the job is sufficiently great to justify the cost of providing reliable operation. In the development of the North the need for increased reliability is greater than ever. In extreme low temperature conditions as found on the NORTH SLOPE operation in Alaska, the harshness of the environment places additional stress both on the equipment and the operators. The development of winterization kits for construction and heavy engineering equipment to date has been slow, probably because of a comparatively small market and because the work could be postponed or accomplished by protecting the equipment and operator by temporary means to meet the purpose. The results have not been economical or as efficient as desired but efficient enough to be acceptable.

Weld Fatigue Damage Assessment of Rail Track Maintenance Equipment: Regulatory Compliance and Practical Insights

2024-03-04
Abstract The use of appropriate loads and regulations is of great importance in weld fatigue assessment of rail on-track maintenance equipment and similar vehicles for optimized design. The regulations and available loads, however, are often generalized for several categories, which proves to be overly conservative for some specific categories of machines. EN (European Norm) and AAR (Association of American Railroads) regulations play a pivotal role in determining the applicable loads and acceptance criteria within this study. The availability of track-induced fatigue load data for the cumulative damage approach in track maintenance machines is often limited. Consequently, the FEA-based validation of rail track maintenance equipment often resorts to the infinite life approach rather than cumulative damage approach for track-induced travel loads, resulting in overly conservative designs.

Web-based Engineering for Product Development and Business Support

2001-11-12
2001-01-2735
Nowadays, developing web (World Wide Web) engineering is considered to be a top priority task in many companies. A corporate web information center with broad coverage to support a company's worldwide engineering activities can make the product development and customer support more efficient. First, the archived, readily available product information, knowledge database, and user friendly engineering tools can ease up the more ever demanding engineering jobs. Second, the convenient information storage, retrieval systems and hyperlinks on the web should ensure effective communications among engineers, customers, and suppliers. However, without in-depth planning, the full benefits of web engineering cannot be realized. To be effective, other companion engineering programs must also be instated. This paper reviews the experience we have gained in utilizing web engineering for product development and customer support.

2001-01-0067
The demands for effective and efficient management of commercial vehicles and freight transport have led to the increasing needs for sophisticated fleet management systems (FMS) for reducing the operation cost of commercial vehicle operation, improving custom service and asset management as well as maintaining the safety and security. The availability and declining costs of telecommunications and information technologies afford opportunities for using real-time information to achieve these targets and the emergence of internet technology make it possible to transfer updated real-time information through more widely available communication media. This paper introduces the web-based remote-access concept for the real-time information acquisition, which has been used to enhance functionality of a dynamic fleet management system.

Verification of Heavy Truck EBS and ABS Using MatrixX Hardware in the Loop Tools

1999-11-15
1999-01-3713
The development of advanced ABS, EBS, and vehicle dynamics control systems requires significant resources and testing. Even in the most controlled environment, on-track vehicle tests are not repeatable. A heavy vehicle model combined with pneumatic brake hardware connected to actual brake system controllers creates a powerful engineering tool. This tool is useful for control system development, electro-mechanical actuator development, and brake system development. An existing heavy vehicle model is modified to interact with the realtime simulation hardware and the pneumatic brake system hardware. Data from several hardware in the loop simulations are presented.

Vehicle On-Board Diagnostics Added Values

2008-10-07
2008-01-2647
Today's vehicles have more and more electronics, and this leads to a greater wealth of information available on a vehicle's communication network. This paper will address the added value of having access to this information. Whether you are the development engineer, the dealership mechanic or the end-user, the information available to the different individuals has become indispensable. Rapid diagnostics of events and faults, automatic correctional interaction of vehicle equipment to compensate failures, as well as preventive maintenance alerts of specific vehicle components are all actions that are helping the various individuals throughout the vehicle's existence. These actions are helping to save time, increase diagnostics accuracy and make the vehicles generally safer. This paper will provide details about a number of events and probable scenarios to demonstrate the added value of having access to the vehicle's communication network.

Vehicle Dynamics: A New Way of Understanding and Optimizing Vehicle Performance

2013-10-07
2013-36-0335
Evaluation of vehicle performance is one of the most important phases of the new vehicle development. Start Ability and Top Speed are factors that are noticed by users, therefore are very important to the final product. Vehicle performance evaluation has been largely benefited from the use of simulation tools. In fact, MAN Latin America (ML) employs simulation programs to evaluate the performance of its vehicles (trucks and buses) achieving good results. However, those programs are normally “closed codes” which makes difficult the physical comprehension of results. Altogether, this article presents Vehicle Dynamics, a macro developed by ML engineering team. The aim of this macro is the automatic calculation of Start Ability, Grade Ability, Top Speed, among other performance parameters.

Vehicle Diagnostics - The Other Approach

1990-10-01
902219
The need for expert systems in the Heavy Truck and Bus Industry is rapidly approaching a critical point in time. This time reference is the revised emission standards and requirements for heavy duty diesels. This need is related to the influx of electronically controlled engines and their companion the electronically controlled transmission as well as the present shortage of skilled mechanics. This paper discusses the conceptual approach and reasons that expert systems are well suited as a diagnostic aid for vehicular repair. This paper also discusses the implementation of a commercially available expert system for the diagnosis of class 7 and 8 vehicles. The body of this paper will be divided into four discussions. First, applicability of AI/KB programs used for vehicle diagnostics. Second, the use of expert systems to diagnose electronically controlled power modules and their related interactivities with the vehicle.

The development of experimental ORC systems is an extremely complex, time consuming and costly task. Running a range of experiments on a number of different component configurations may be prohibitively expensive and subject to equipment issues and failures. Yet ORC systems offer significant potential for automotive manufacturers to improve vehicle efficiency, reduce fuel consumption and vehicle emissions; the technology is particularly relevant for those involved in the design and/or manufacture of heavy duty trucks. This paper is focused on the validation of a computational ORC system simulation tool against a number of SAE published test results based on the European Stationary Cycle. Such studies on industry standard systems are essential in order to help promote confidence in a virtual prototype approach.
