Applying Combustion Chamber Surface Temperature to Combustion Control of Motorcycle Engines

Motorcycle usage continues to expand globally. Motorcycles use various fuels in different countries and regions, and it is required that they comply with emissions and fuel consumption regulations as specified in UN-GTR No.2 (WMTC). In general, a motorcycle engine has a large bore diameter and a high compression ratio due to demands of high performance. Poor fuel quality may cause damage to the engine, mainly by knocking. Knock control systems utilizing high-frequency vibration detection strategies like knock sensors, which are equipped on several sport-touring motorcycles, are not used widely for reasons of complex construction and high cost. This research aims to develop a new concept of combustion control for common motorcycle as an alternative.

In racing world regardless of two-wheeled vehicle (motorcycle) or four-wheeled vehicle, vehicle setting is performed in accordance with various race conditions. From the age of carburetor till even now ECU is used, vehicle setting executes as well and plays an important role. Changeover to electronic control makes vehicle control more precise; meanwhile, vehicle control technique to become complicated is occurring every day. Therefore, whenever a new competition vehicle is developed, tool required for vehicle setting is also necessary to be updated according to vehicle control technique implemented. Setting-method till now is that, all information required for vehicle setting is packaged in tool, thereby tool and vehicle have always been a combination of 1-to-1. Consequently, in manufacturer's vehicle development, tool development / update becomes a burden and leads to increment of development costs.

Development of DBW System for Motorcycles with Fast Response and Layout Flexibility

The Drive By Wire (hereafter referred to as DBW) system is the electronically throttle control system. It controls a throttle valve in order to aim at a suitable throttle position according to an engine operating condition and a demand of driver or rider. This system is basically composed of a throttle body with driving motor, an Accelerator Position Sensor (hereafter referred to as APS), and an Electronic Control Unit (hereafter referred to as ECU). The DBW system is spreading to motorcycle field as replacement of existing mechanical intake control system. This is because there are some advantages as the following especially in the large displacement model: capability for installation of several functions, flexibility in adaptation to recent environmental regulations, and effect on reduction of system cost, etc. In general, the motorcycle has some unique features compared with the automobile. Among them, important features for the DBW system are following three points.

Effects of Cavitation and Hydraulic Flip in 3-Hole GDI Injectors

The performance of Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engines is governed by multiple physical processes such as the internal nozzle flow and the mixing of the liquid stream with the gaseous ambient environment. A detailed knowledge of these processes even for complex injectors is very important for improving the design and performance of combustion engines all the way to pollutant formation and emissions. However, many processes are still not completely understood, which is partly caused by their restricted experimental accessibility. Thus, high-fidelity simulations can be helpful to obtain further understanding of GDI injectors. In this work, advanced simulation and experimental methods are combined in order to study the spray characteristics of two different 3-hole GDI injectors.

Experimental Investigation of Cavitation in Gasoline Injectors

Spray characteristics of injectors depend on, among other factors, not only the level of turbulence upstream of the nozzle plate, but also on whether cavitation arises. "Bulk" cavitation, by which we mean cavitation which arises far from walls and thus far from streamline curvature associated with salient points on a wall, has not been investigated thoroughly experimentally and moreover it is quite challenging to predict by means of computational fluid dynamics. Information about the effect of the injector geometry on the formation of bulk cavitation and quantitative measurements of the flow field that promotes this phenomenon in gasoline injectors does not exist and this forms the background to this work. Evolution of bulk cavitation was visualized in two gasoline multi-hole injectors by means of a fast camera.

High-Fidelity Numerical Modeling of Spark Plug Erosion

Spark plug erosion is critical in determining the overall efficiency of a spark ignition engine. Over its lifetime, a spark plug is subject to millions of firings. Each spark event results in material erosion due to several mechanisms such as melting, vaporization, sputtering and oxidation. With electrode wear, the inter-electrode spacing increases and a larger voltage difference is required to initiate the spark. The probability of engine misfires also increases with electrode erosion. Once a critical gap is reached, the energy in the ignition coil is not enough to cause a spark breakdown, and the spark plug must be replaced. Due to the long relevant time scales over which erosion occurs, and the difficulty of analyzing the spark plug environment during operation, determining spark plug lifetime typically requires extensive field testing. A high fidelity commercial thermal plasma solver, VizSpark is used simulate electrode erosion due to spark events.

Improvement of Spray Characteristics in Port Injectors

Fuel spray injected by a port injector has significant effects on engine power output and combustion efficiency. For this reason, it is necessary to atomize fuel into fine droplets and accurately supply it without being susceptible to any changes in temperature or negative pressure affected by engine. This document introduces an atomization technique with optimized layout of nozzle holes and drastically reduced pressure loss (energy loss) in the flow under a needle valve seat. It also describes an injector having a short fuel flow path and a small dead volume under the valve seat, which can have good resistance against any changes in temperature and negative pressure.

Multi-dimensional Modeling of Non-equilibrium Plasma for Automotive Applications

While spark-ignition (SI) engine technology is aggressively moving towards challenging (dilute and boosted) combustion regimes, advanced ignition technologies generating non-equilibrium types of plasma are being considered by the automotive industry as a potential replacement for the conventional spark-plug technology. However, there are currently no models that can describe the low-temperature plasma (LTP) ignition process in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes that are typically used in the multi-dimensional engine modeling community. A key question for the engine modelers that are trying to describe the non-equilibrium ignition physics concerns the plasma characteristics. A key challenge is also represented by the plasma formation timescale (nanoseconds) that can hardly be resolved within a full engine cycle simulation.

Predictive Breakdown Modeling for Spark Plug Design

Spark-plug lifetime is limited by the ability of the ignition coil to generate a spark channel. Electrode erosion during operation causes the geometry to deform and the maximum voltage required to form a spark increases until the ignition coil is no longer able to form the spark channel. Numerical models that can analyze the breakdown of the plasma in a spark plug have typically been limited to vacuum electrical field simulations and full-fidelity plasma models. In the present work, we present a fast, predictive breakdown model that blends the speed and computational efficiency of electric field model and incorporates the essential physics of the breakdown event without having to pay the cost of solving the full set of plasma governing equations.

Simulation of Spark-Initiated Combustion

There has been an increased interest in understanding the initial stages of flame kernel formation in internal combustion engines as it offers a potential way of improving their thermal efficiency. For spark-ignited engines, the dynamics that govern the initial spark and its transition into a flame kernel play an important role in determining the overall engine efficiency. In this regard, this paper presents a computational model developed to simulate a spark discharge formed in a premixed fuel air mixture. Additionally, by simultaneously modeling the reactive fluid dynamics that governs combustion with the electromagnetics that governs the spark, the overall objective of this paper is to consistently simulate spark-initiated combustion in a premixed fuel-air mixture. Two different fuel-oxidizer mixtures are considered in this study, hydrogen-oxygen and methane-oxygen. Key mechanisms via which the spark channel ignites the mixture are identified and studied in detail.

Simulations of Spark-Plug Transient Plasma Breakdown in Automotive Internal Combustion Engines

The arc breakdown phase in automotive spark-plugs is a sub-microsecond event that precedes the main spark event. This phase is typically characterized by strong non-equilibrium plasma phenomena with high voltage and currents. The nature of the initial breakdown phase has strong implications for the successful spark formation and the electrode erosion/lifetime. There are evidently very few studies that seek to characterize this phase in detail. The goal of this work is to investigate this non-equilibrium plasma arc breakdown phase, using high-fidelity computational modeling. We perform studies using the VizGlow non-equilibrium plasma modeling tool. During the early breakdown phase, the plasma forms thin filamentary streamers that provide the initial conductive channel across the gap. Once the streamers bridge the gap, the plasma begins to transition to a thermal arc.
