3D Simulation Methodology to Predict Passenger Thermal Comfort Inside a Cabin

The vehicle Heating, Ventilation and Air conditioning (HVAC) system is designed to meet both the safety and thermal comfort requirements of the passengers inside the cabin. The thermal comfort requirement, however, is highly subjective and is usually met objectively by carrying out time dependent mapping of parameters like the velocity and temperature at various in-cabin locations. These target parameters are simulated for the vehicle interior for a case of hot soaking and its subsequent cool-down to test the efficacy of the AC system. Typically, AC performance is judged by air temperature at passenger locations, thermal comfort estimation along with time to reach comfortable condition for human. Simulating long transient vehicle cabin for thermal comfort evaluation is computationally expensive and involves complex cabin material modelling.

A Low Cost Euro-III Development Strategy for 4 L Engine for Commercial Vehicle Application

Reduction of NOx (Oxides of Nitrogen) and particulates from engine exhaust is one of the prime considerations in current research and development in automotive industry. The present paper describes the combustion optimization done on a four cylinder, 4 liter DI diesel engine to meet stringent Euro-III emission norms. The engine FIE (Fuel Injection Equipment) and injector geometry was optimized for performance and emission. Smoke measurements were considered as indicative of soot, to predict particulate emissions. This was done to simplify the overall process and save development time. It was concluded that by combining the flexibility of electronically controlled fuel injection begin, with improved nozzle technologies, with higher spray velocities and spray penetration, a considerable reduction in NOx and particulate emissions can be achieved. This can serve as a low cost solution, without any exhaust after-treatment systems.

A Methodology to Predict Mobile Air-Conditioning System (MAC) Performance for Low GWP Drop-In Refrigerant Using 1D CAE Simulation Tool

In developing nations, most passenger vehicles are equipped with mobile air conditioning (MAC) systems that work on Hydro Fluoro Carbons (HFC) based refrigerants. These refrigerants have a high global warming potential (GWP) and hence adversely affect the environment. According to the Kigali amendment to Montreal Protocol, Article-5 Group-2 countries including India must start phasing down HFCs from 2028 and replace them with low Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerants. One such class of low GWP refrigerant is Hydro Fluoro Olefins (HFO) In order to replace HFCs with HFOs in existing MAC systems, the various system performance parameters with the new refrigerant are required to be evaluated. Performance evaluation of MAC system is rendered quicker and cost-effective by deploying a digital simulation tool. There is good correlation and confidence established for MAC performance prediction with HFCs through 1D CAE.

A Model Based Approach to DPF Soot Estimation and Validation for BSVI Commercial Vehicles in Context to Indian Driving Cycles

With India achieving the BSVI milestone, the diesel particulate filter (DPF) has become an imperative component of a modern diesel engine. A DPF system is a device designed to trap soot from exhaust gas of the diesel engine and demands periodic regeneration events to oxidize the accumulated soot particles. The regeneration event is triggered either based on the soot mass limit of the filter or the delta pressure across it. For a Heavy Duty Diesel Engine (HDDE), pressure difference across the DPF is not usually reliable as the size of the DPF is large enough compared to the DPF used ina passenger vehicle diesel engine. Also, the pressure difference across DPF is a function of exhaust mass flow and thus it makes it difficult to make an accurate call for active regeneration. This demands for a very accurate soot estimation model and it plays a vital role in a successful regeneration event.

Rapid depletion in fuel resources owing to the low efficiency of current automobiles has been a major threat to future generations for fuel availability as well as environmental health. Advanced new generation of internal combustion (IC) engines are expected to have far better emissions levels both gaseous (NOx and CO) and particulate matter, at the same time having far lower fuel consumption on a wide range of operating condition. These criteria could be improved having a homogeneous combustion process in an engine. Homogeneous mixing of fuel and air in HCCI leads to cleaner combustion and lower emissions. Since peak temperatures are significantly lower than in typical SI engines, NOx levels and soot are reduced to some extent. Because of absence of complete homogeneous combustion but quasi homogeneous combustion present in HCCI, there is still a possibility of further reducing the emissions as well as enhancing the engine performance.

Adhesive Failure Prediction in Crash Simulations

Structural adhesive is a good alternative to provide required strength at joinery of similar and dissimilar materials. Adhesive joinery plays a critical role to maintain structural integrity during vehicle crash scenario. Robust adhesive failure definitions are critical for accurate predictions of structural performance in crash Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) simulations. In this paper, structural adhesive material characterization challenges like comprehensive In-house testing and CAE correlation aspects are discussed. Considering the crash loading complexity, test plan is devised for identification of strength and failure characteristics at 0°, 45°, 75°, 90°, and Peel loading conditions. Coupon level test samples were prepared with high temperature curing of structural adhesive along with metal panels. Test fixtures were prepared to carryout testing using Instron VHS machine under quasi-static and dynamic loading.

ISOFIX anchorage plays a critical role in restraining child occupants during crashes. Effective design of ISOFIX anchorages is essential for achieving controlled child occupant kinematics. CAE simulations are extensively used for the development of ISOFIX anchorages. Comprehensive material characterization of ISOFIX wires play a vital role for achieving desired prediction accuracy. This paper covers the detailed process of ISOFIX material characterization for material failure prediction. ISOFIX wires are case hardened to exhibit required strength characteristics. Due to its material characteristics, the conventional material models don't give desired prediction accuracy for failure prediction. Therefore, advanced material models are developed in LS Dyna environment, which can accurately predict plastic and fracture behavior of ISOFIX wires.

Fairing of a Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) is responsible for the reduction in the aerodynamic drag force and its material determines the overall weight and the top speed of the vehicle. Selection of material for fairings depends on various physical, mechanical and manufacturing properties along with practical considerations like availability of material. Today, an ever-increasing variety of composite materials and polymers are available, each of them possessing their own characteristics, applications, advantages and limitations. Many automotive composites are used for manufacturing fairings. Materials like Carbon fiber, Glass fiber (E glass, S glass), Aramid fiber (Kevlar 29, Kevlar 49) are some of the viable options that have been used in the past for manufacturing fairing of HPVs.

Characterization of PU Foam for High Temperature Applications in Automobiles

Due to continuous demands from OEM's to reduce weight and make more compact vehicles, high heat generation from vehicle has become common phenomenon. Thermal insulation is a need of the hour to cater to such demands. The temperature rise is more critical around engine areas. OEM's use many design solutions to cater to such heat build up's. One of the design solutions includes use of thermally insulating materials e.g. Foams, insulating fabrics etc… First section of this paper deals with comparative study of polyurethane (PU) soft foam and rigid skin polyurethane foam. To define the base line, the samples were subjected to various tests to determine physical, thermal and chemical properties. Also both the types of foams were subjected to high temperature and low temperature heat ageing. From the experiments, it was observed that soft PU foam provides better re-bounce property than rigid skin PU foam.

Increased dependency on fossil fuels has led to its depletion as well as affected the environment adversely. Moreover, increasing crude oil prices is pressurizing vehicle manufacturers to invent new technology so as to increase fuel economy and at the same time to keep emissions under control. Hydrogen has gained popularity not just in terms of being an abundant alternative but also due to being a very clean propellant. In the present investigation, hydrogen boosting has been performed on an SI engine running on gasoline-methanol and ethanol-gasoline blends to determine the additional advantages of the same compared to pure gasoline operation. The engine selected for experimental analysis is a single cylinder, air cooled spark ignition engine that has been modified for hydrogen injection in the intake manifold prior to the port with the injection timing being held constant throughout the experiment.

The continued reliance on fossil fuel energy resources is not sufficient to cater to the current energy demands. The excessive and continuous use of crude oil is now recognized as unviable due to its depleting supplies and elevating environmental degradation by increased emissions from automobile exhaust. There is an urgent need for a renewable and cleaner source of energy to meet the stringent emission norms. Hythane is a mixture of 20% hydrogen and 80% methane. It has benefits of low capital and operating costs and is a cleaner alternative than crude oil. It significantly reduces tailpipe emissions and is the cheapest way to meet new emission standards that is BS-IV. Hythane produces low carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrocarbons (HC) on combustion than crude oil and helps in reduction of greenhouse gases.

Comparative Tribological Investigation of Mahua Oil and its Chemically Modified Derivatives

For the last decade, the lubricant industry has been trying to formulate biodegradable lubricants with technical characteristics superior to those based on petroleum. A renewable resource, mahua oil, is good alternative to mineral oil because of its environmentally friendly, non toxic and readily biodegradable nature. The triacylglycerol structure of mahua oil is amphiphilic in character that makes it an excellent candidate as lubricant and functional fluid. It is also very attractive for industrial applications that have potential for environmental contact through accidental leakage, dripping or generates large quantities of after-use waste materials requiring costly disposal. Vegetable oil in its natural form has limited use as industrial fluids due to poor thermo-oxidation stability, low temperature behavior and other tribochemical degrading processes.

Design and Optimization of Composite Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (Hawt) Blade

Wind energy is clean and renewable source of energy that is an attractive alternative to non-conventional sources of energy. Due to rapid increase in global energy requirements, this form of energy is gaining its share of importance. Unlike nuclear power or tar sand oils, wind energy does not leave a long-term toxic legacy. Using MATLAB algorithms, multi-optimization of wind turbine design can be achieved. Therefore, an aerodynamic mathematical model is developed to obtain the optimal chord length and twist angle distribution along the blade span. Further, a promising generic blade design is used to initialize a detailed structure optimization wherein leading edge panel (LEP), Spar cap, Shear web, Trailing edge panel (TEP) reinforcement are sized using composite laminates so that the blade is according to the intended design standard. Initially blade airfoils are analyzed on 2D platform and then the results are used to construct 3D model of Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT) blade.

Drive components of live axle undergoes different loading conditions during field usage depending upon terrain conditions, vehicle loading and traffic conditions etc. During vehicle running, drive components of axle experiences variable torque levels, which results in the fatigue damage of the components. Testing of these drive components of axle on test rig for endurance life is an imperative part of axle development, owing to limitations of vehicle testing because of time and cost involved. Similarly, correlating field failures with rig testing is equally critical. In such situation, if a test cycle is derived correlating the field usage, rig testing can be effectively used for accelerated life testing and reliability prediction of these components. An approach is presented in the paper wherein test cycle is derived based on the data collected on vehicle in the field under service road and loading conditions.

The dynamic response of structures to operating or occasional loads is crucial for design considerations, as it directly impacts the cumulative fatigue life. In practice, accurately discerning the precise loads and structural conditions, which involve considerations such as boundary conditions, geometry, and mechanical properties, can be quite challenging. Significant efforts are invested in identifying these factors and developing suitable prediction models. Nonetheless, the estimated forces and boundary conditions remain approximations, leading to uncertainties which affects the overall predictions and the analysis of how stress and strain develop in the structure during subsequent evaluations. Many researchers frequently employ a method where they estimate the forces acting on the system based on measurement data obtained at limited number of locations over the structure.

To meet different target of light-weighting, lower fuel economy, crash safety and emission requirement, advanced high strength steel (AHSS) is commonly used in automotive vehicles and has become popular now a days. AHSS material up-to 1500 MPa is commonly used for structural components and major reinforcement of automotive BIW. Manufacturing of AHSS material requires precise control of chemical composition, and subsequent rolling and heat treatment to get optimum combination of required phases In most of the AHSS material microstructure, martensite is present along with ferrite or other phases. Hot stamp steel with strength level 1500 MPa strength also have martensite phase in microstructure after press hardening. However during heating and cooling cycle in resistance spot welding, martensite phase tempering affects hardness at Heat Affected Zone (HAZ).

The power generation, agriculture, and transportation sectors are dominated by diesel engines due to better thermal efficiency and durability. Diesel engines are also a major contributor to the air pollutants such as NOx and particulate matter. Acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) is considered a promising alternative fuel as it emits less pollutants compared to conventional fuels. In current work, the ABE used was of the ratio (3:6:1) and four samples were prepared for engine trial ABE (10%90%diesel), ABE (20%80%diesel), ABE (30%70%diesel) and ABE (40%60%diesel). Their physio-chemical properties like kinematic viscosity, density, specific gravity and calorific value were checked and tested on compression ignition engine at different operating parameters. The experimental work was conducted upon Kirloskar 4-stroke single cylinder, vertical, air-cooled 661cc compression ignition engine at different speeds and loads.
