A New 4.5 Liter In-Line 6 Cylinder Engine, 1FZ-FE for the Toyota Land Cruiser

A new 4.5 liter in-line 6 cylinder engine,1 FZ-FE has been developed for the Toyota Land Cruiser. To obtain high power, fuel efficient engine, we adopted the most advanced Toyota technologies, such as Toyota original 4 Valve DOHC system with scissors gear between camshafts, compact combustion chamber with smooth inlet and outlet system, KCS and so on. The engine produces 212 HP at 4600 rpm and 275 ft-lbs at 3200 rpm. Aluminum cylinder head,short skirt cylinder block stiffened with aluminum oil pan give the engine light weight and make it rigid enough to have low vibration and quietness. And we also designed every engine part appropriately so as to make the engine durable enough in severe operating condition of off-road vehicle.

A New Method to Analyze Fuel Behavior in a Spark Ignition Engine

In SI engines with port injection system, fuel behavior both in the intake port and in the cylinder has significant influence on the transient A/F characteristics and HC emissions [1]. Therefore, to improve the engine performance, it is very important to understand fuel behavior in the intake port and in the cylinder [2, 3]. This paper describes the following three unique methods to analyze fuel behavior in port injected SI engines and some test results. (1) Observation of fuel behavior in the intake port, using a transparent intake air tube and a strobe synchronized TV-photographic system. (2) Observation of fuel behavior in the cylinder, using a glass cylinder and fluorescent fuel. (3) Measurement of fuel wall wetting in the intake port and in the cylinder, using the engine with electronically controlled hydraulically driven in-take/exhaust valves.

A Study of Additive Effects on ATF Frictional Properties Using New Test Methods

A new test machine has been developed which can evaluate vibration due to stick-slip using an actual full-scale clutch pack. Using this machine, a static breakaway friction coefficient measurement test method and a stick-slip test method have been established. Both methods have been shown to provide results which correlate with the results from both a full-scale assembly test and a vehicle shudder evaluation test. The evaluation of the frictional properties of commercial oils using these test methods showed that the static breakaway friction coefficient and the stick-slip properties have generally contradictory performance to each other for automatic transmission. The study of the frictional properties for typical additives and an analysis of the surface of the steel plates with ESCA (Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis) showed that the frictional properties are significantly affected by the additives adsorbed on the clutch plate sliding surface.

Achieving Lower Exhaust Emissions and Better Performance in an HSDI Diesel Engine with Multiple Injection

The effects of multiple-injection on exhaust emissions and performance in a small HSDI (High Speed Direct Injection) Diesel engine were examined. The causes for the improvement were investigated using both in-cylinder observation and three-dimensional numerical analysis methods. It is possible to increase the maximum torque, which is limited by the exhaust smoke number, while decreasing the combustion noise under low speed and full load conditions by advancing the timing of the pilot injection. Dividing this early-timed pilot injection into two with a small fuel amount is effective for further decreasing the noise while suppressing the increase in HC emission and fuel consumption. This is realized by the reduced amount of adhered fuel to the cylinder wall. At light loads, the amount of pilot injection fuel must be reduced, and the injection must be timed just prior to the main injection in order to suppress a possible increase in smoke and HC.

Aerodynamic Effects of an Overtaking Articulated Heavy Goods Vehicle on Car-Trailer-An Analysis to Improve Controllability

It is well known and a common experience among drivers that controllability and stability of a car-trailer combination is affected when an articulated Heavy Goods Vehicle overtakes. In this paper, aerodynamic effects to a car-trailer combination when it is overtaken by an articulated HGV, have been analyzed experimentally using 1/20 scale models in wind tunnel, and a method to suppress this phenomenon has been investigated. The dynamic behaivor of a car-trailer combination is simulated by a simple mathematical model. The result shows that a car-trailer combination can be stable following the addittion of aerodynamic devices to each side of the vehicle. This simulated result is verified by the on-read test.

An Intake Valve Deposit (IVD) Engine Test Development to Investigate Deposit Build-Up Mechanism Using a Real Engine

In emerging markets, Port Fuel Injection (PFI) technology retains a higher market share than Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) technology. In these markets fuel quality remains a concern even despite an overall improvement in quality. Typical PFI engines are sensitive to fuel quality regardless of brand, engine architecture, or cylinder configuration. One of the well-known impacts of fuel quality on PFI engines is the formation of Intake Valve Deposits (IVD). These deposits steadily accumulate over time and can lead to a deterioration of engine performance. IVD formation mechanisms have been characterized in previous studies. However, no test is available on a state-of-the-art engine to study the impact of fuel components on IVD formation. Therefore, a proprietary engine test was developed to test several chemistries. Sixteen fuel blends were tested. The deposit formation mechanism has been studied and analysed.

Analysis of Cylinder Bore Distortion During Engine Operation

A calculation method of the bore distortion during engine operation was developed. This method can consider the sliding effect of the cylinder head on the top dock of the cylinder block. The bore distortion during engine operation calculated by this method agrees with that measured by Fujimoto, better than that calculated by conventional method. Calculated results for a Toyota 4-cylinder in-line 1.5L engine showed that thermal distortion has larger effects on the cylinder bore distortion during engine operation than cylinder head clamping distortion.

Analysis of Milling Mechanism by Ball End-Mill and Development of High Speed Die-Sinking Method

Various dies have been used for producing many internal and external parts of an automobile. This paper describes the method of ‘High Speed Die-sinking’ that is one of the key technologies for die-making. We analyzed the milling mechanism of a typical Ball End-Mill used for die-sinking and performed cutting tests. As a result, we have achieved high speed and fine quality die-sinking technology. Its feed speed is about four or five times as fast as before, and the irregularity of the milled surface is under one-fifth as compared with previous level. In addition, we will propose the new method for estimating finishing performance by ball end-mill.

Analysis of Oil Consumption at High Engine Speed by Visualization of the Piston Ring Behaviors

In internal combustion engine, it is well-known that oil infiltrates the combustion chamber through the clearance between the piston ring and the cylinder bore with vertical reciprocating motion of the piston, leading to an increase in oil consumption. The deformation of the cylinder bore is inevitable to some extent in the actual engine because of the tightening of cylinder head bolt and heat load._As to the function of the piston ring, it is desirable that it conforms to such bore deformation. The author et al. made a glass cylinder engine in which closed piston ring gap could be visualized, based on the idea that piston ring conformability to the sliding surface of bore could be evaluated from minute changes of the piston ring gap. This newly-devised visualized engine was an in-line 4-cylinder engine, capable of running up to 6,000 rpm, in which the closed gap of piston ring could be observed minutely during engine operation.

Analysis of Oil Consumption by Observing Oil Behavior Around Piston Ring Using a Glass Cylinder Engine

The reduction of engine oil consumption rate is one of the important concerns for automotive engineers. However, it has been difficult to solve this subject, since the oil consumption mechanism has not yet been elucidated. In this study, to clarify the oil loss mechanism via the piston rings, a transparent glass cylinder engine was used to observe oil behavior between cylinder wall and piston surface. For photographic observation, a high speed camera, a still camera. and a TV camera were used. Since the new photographic system by using TV camera with a synchro - flash and a synchro-memory was applied, it was also possible to observe the oil behavior in detail. Moreover, a new visual method by which colored oil was injected from the various points on the piston surface and traced was developed for easy analysis of oil movement around the piston ring.

Analysis of Piston Friction - Effects of Cylinder Bore Temperature Distribution and Oil Temperature

Hybrid vehicles (HVs) are becoming more widely used. Since HVs supplement engine drive with motor power, the lubricant oil temperature remains at a lower level than in a conventional gasoline vehicle. This study analyzed the effect of cylinder bore temperature and lubricant oil temperature on engine friction. The results showed that, although the lubricant oil temperature was not relevant, the bore temperature had significant effect on piston friction. It was found that raising the temperature of the middle section of the cylinder bore was the most effective way of reducing piston friction.

Analysis of Sintered Silicon Nitride Grinding Damage

Sintered silicon nitride, particularly in structural ceramics, has superior properties such as low weight, heat resistance, wear resistance, etc. It is already being applied to automobile engine parts such as the swirl chamber and the turbine rotor. In recent years, the strength of silicon nitride has shown to be above 1000MPa. This has been achieved through advances in manufacturing technology such as materials powder, forming, sintering and so on. But the silicon nitride is easily damaged during grinding because it has less fracture toughness than metal. Consequently, the inherent strength of the material is not demonstrated in the actual products presently produced. It is assumed that the main cause of strength reduction is microcrack. In ordinary grinding methods, the length of microcrack has been estimated at approximately twenty micrometers by fracture mechanics analysis.

Analysis of the Fuel Liquid Film Thickness of a Port Fuel Injection Engine

In this paper, the authors have developed a new measuring method of the liquid fuel film thickness on walls, such as intake ports, the combustion chamber and cylinder liner of a Port Fuel Injection (PFI) engine, and clarified the fuel film behavior under various running conditions when Fiber-based Laser-Induced Fluorescence (Fiber-based LIF) was applied to the newly developed method. The thickness of the fuel film is measured by detecting the intensity of fluorescence from the film that is irradiated by a He-Cd laser. A single optical fiber is used to simultaneously transmit the laser beam and the fluorescence from the film. In addition, the S/N ratio of the fluorescence is improved by using a He-Cd laser of which the wavelength (λ=442nm) is able to efficiently irradiate test fuel doped 2-3-butandione. Using this method, the fuel film thickness on the wall of the PFI engine was analyzed in two case studies.

Application of Dynamic Mode Decomposition to Influence the Driving Stability of Road Vehicles

The recent growth of available computational resources has enabled the automotive industry to utilize unsteady Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for their product development on a regular basis. Over the past years, it has been confirmed that unsteady CFD can accurately simulate the transient flow field around complex geometries. Concerning the aerodynamic properties of road vehicles, the detailed analysis of the transient flow field can help to improve the driving stability. Until now, however, there haven’t been many investigations that successfully identified a specific transient phenomenon from a simulated flow field corresponding to driving stability. This is because the unsteady flow field around a vehicle consists of various time and length scales and is therefore too complex to be analyzed with the same strategies as for steady state results.

Binding Force Control of Uni-Pressure Cushion in Automobile Panel Stamping

Recently, single action draw with cushion replaces draw with double action presses. In the single action draw, binding fluctuation problem occurs by its structure. We applied an NC cushion to prevent the problem. We compared the cushion force wave with and without an NC cushion. The NC cushion showed effective damping. We studied the binding force control of a side member outer panel. The panel didn't have the formable range of binding. This means the lowest binding force to avoid wrinkling, still had crack problems. We introduce four patterns of binding force control with the NC cushion. As a result, we found the suitable pattern to suppress the surface distortion. Controlling the binding force shows effectiveness as a means of suppressing surface distortions.

Combustion Noise Analysis of Premixed Diesel Engine by Engine Tests and Simulations

When fuel is vaporized and mixed well with air in the cylinder of premixed diesel engines, the mixture auto-ignites in one burst resulting in strong combustion noise, and combustion noise reduction is necessary to achieve high load premixed diesel engine operation. In this paper, an engine noise analysis was conducted by engine tests and simulations. The engine employed in the experiments was a supercharged single cylinder DI diesel engine with a high pressure common rail fuel injection system. The engine noise was sampled by two microphones and the sampled engine noise was averaged and analyzed by an FFT sound analyzer. The engine was equipped with a pressure transducer and the combustion noise was calculated from the power spectrum of the FFT analysis of the in-cylinder pressure wave data from the cross power spectrum of the sound pressure of the engine noise.

Computational Analysis of Flow Around a Simplified Vehicle-Like Body

The flow around a simplified vehicle-like body was computed. The aerodynamic characteristics of this body depended on the afterbody geometry, especially the rear slant angle. In order to examine reliability of computation, the computations were performed for various rear slant angles. Regarding the computational method, two kinds of methods were applied: a Navier-Stokes solver that employs a k- ε turbulence model and a quasi-direct simulation with a third-order upwind difference scheme. Comparing the results with a wind tunnel test data of the flow fields and aerodynamic forces, it was found that, the k- ε model had potential for prediction of flow field and the quasi-direct simulation for prediction of aerodynamic forces.

Coupled-SEA Application to Full Vehicle with Numerical Turbulent Model Excitation for Wind Noise Improvement

Wind noise is becoming a higher priority in the automotive industry. Several past studies investigated whether Statistical Energy Analysis (SEA) can be utilized to predict wind noise. Because wind noise analysis requires both radiation and transmission modeling in a wide frequency band, turbulent-structure-acoustic-coupled-SEA is being used. Past research investigated coupled-SEA’s benefit, but the model is usually simplified to enable easier consideration on the input side. However, the vehicle is composed of multiple interior parts and possible interior countermeasure consideration is needed. To enable this, at first, a more detailed coupled-SEA model is built from the acoustic-SEA model which has a larger number of degrees of freedom for the interior side. Then, the model is modified to account for sound radiation effects induced by turbulent and acoustic pressure.

To more effectively improve the work on a vehicle assembly line, it is desirable to have a method by which the degree of work load on each person can be evaluated quantitatively; enables us to decide the priority order of improvement; and calculates the improvement effect. We developed a quantitative evaluation method of work load by introducing a concept of physiological stress generated regardless of the type of muscles involved. Applying the burden borne by the body to the load evaluation of various assembly operations involved the problem of complex load measuring methods. We solved this problem by categorizing the load conditions for various assembly operations and converting each to a standard state of loads evaluated by experiments.

And engine bearings have been required to be advanced in wear resistance as well as seizure resistance. Therefore, copper-lead alloy bearings with overlay, which have better seizure resistance, have been widely used for high speed engines up to the present. But it becomes very important for them to advance the overlay wear resistance. In this paper, the composite overlay is mainly researched to improve wear resistance regarding kind of hard particles and their amounts in the overlay.
