100 Hour Endurance Testing of a High Output Adiabatic Diesel Engine

An advanced low heat rejection engine concept has successfully completed a 100 hour endurance test. The combustion chamber components were insulated with thermal barrier coatings. The engine components included a titanium piston, titanium headface plate, titanium cylinder liner insert, M2 steel valve guides and monolithic zirconia valve seat inserts. The tribological system was composed of a ceramic chrome oxide coated cylinder liner, chrome carbide coated piston rings and an advanced polyolester class lubricant. The top piston compression ring Included a novel design feature to provide self-cleaning of ring groove lubricant deposits to prevent ring face scuffing. The prototype test engine demonstrated 52 percent reduction in radiator heat rejection with reduced intake air aftercooling and strategic forced oil cooling.

A Diagnostic Technique for the identification of Misfiring Cylinder(s)

This paper introduces a diagnostic technique for the detection of misfiring cylinders in internal combustion engines. The technique requires the analysis of the instantaneous angular velocity of an engine flywheel. The results show that the mean cyclic acceleration, maximum variation in angular velocity, and the cyclic period of acceleration can be used as a measure for the mean net torque and the mean net expansion pressure torque produced by each cylinder. The proposed technique has proven to be effective in identifying a faulty cylinder using efficient and simple computations.

A New Approach to Evaluate Instantaneous Friction and Its Components in Internal Combustion Engines

A new approach referred to as (P-ω) method, has been developed at Wayne State University to determine the instantaneous friction and its components in internal combustion engines. The method is based on the fact that the instantaneous cylinder gas forces and the instantaneous frictional, inertia and load forces cause the instantaneous variation in the flywheel angular velocity. The instantaneous total friction forces have been computed for a single diesel engine, under idling conditions. A breakdown of the friction into its components and a formulation for each component has been made. By applying linear regression, correlations between the individual components of the friction losses and the different parameters have been developed. The components are classified into two categories: piston assembly losses and crankcase assembly losses.

A New Ignition Delay Formulation Applied to Predict Misfiring During Cold Starting of Diesel Engines

A new formulation is developed for the ignition delay (ID) in diesel engines to account for the effect of piston motion on the global autoignition reaction rates. A differentiation is made between the IDe measured in engines and IDv, measured in constant volume vessels. In addition, a method is presented to determine the coefficients of the IDe correlation from actual engine experimental data. The new formulation for IDe is applied to predict the misfiring cycles during the cold starting of diesel engines at different low ambient temperatures. The predictions are compared with experimental results obtained on a multi-cylinder heavy-duty diesel engine.

Advanced Insulated Titanium Piston for Adiabatic Engine

A highly effective thermal insulating piston concept with high projected durability characteristics has been developed by means of computer aided modelling, thermal rig bench screening, and small-bore engine testing. The piston concept is composed of a relatively low thermal conductivity titanium alloy type 6242 structural material and a 1.25 mm thick slurry densified thermal barrier coating. The piston material, structural configuration, and detail design features were selected through computer aided modelling and qualified through small-bore engine testing. Screening of plasma sprayed thermal barrier coatings was performed on a simple thermal test rig and final selection of a system was made through small-bore engine testing.

Advances in High Temperature Components for the Adiabatic Engine

An advanced low heat rejection engine concept has been selected based on a trade-off between thermal insulating performance and available technology. The engine concept heat rejection performance is limited by available ring-liner tribology and requires cylinder liner cooling to control the piston top ring reversal temperature. This engine concept is composed of a titanium piston, headface plate and cylinder liner insert with thermal barrier coatings. Monolithic zirconia valve seat inserts, and thermal barrier coated valves and intake-exhaust ports complete the insulation package. The tribological system is composed of chrome oxide coated cylinder, M2 steel top piston ring, M2 steel valve guides, and an advanced polyol ester class lubricant.

An Analysis of Regulated and Unregulated Emissions in an HSDI Diesel Engine under the LTC Regime

Several mechanisms are discussed to understand the formation of both regulated and unregulated emissions in a high speed, direct injection, single cylinder diesel engine using low sulphur diesel fuel. Experiments were conducted over a wide range of injection pressures, EGR rates, injection timings and swirl ratios. The regulated emissions were measured by the standard emission equipment. Unregulated emissions such as aldehydes and ketones were measured by high pressure liquid chromatography and hydrocarbon speciation by gas chromatography. Particulate mass was measured with a Tapered Element Oscillating Microbalance (TEOM). Analysis was made of the sources of different emission species and their relationship with the combustion process under the different operating conditions. Special attention is given to the low temperature combustion (LTC) regime which is known to reduce both NOx and soot. However the HC, CO and unregulated emissions increased at a higher rate.

Cetane Scale: Function, Problems and Possible Solutions

This paper identifies the original function of the Cetane Scale and examines some problem of concern to the technical community. The following six problems have been analyzed: i) inability of the ASTM D-613 method to rate low ignition quality fuels, ii) instability of the ignition delay meter, iii) inconformity of the CFR combustion system with actual diesel systems, iv) invalidity of Cetane number in correlating the I.D. for different fuels, engines and operating conditions, v) inaccuracy of Cetane number in ranking the overall performance and emission behaviour of fuels in diesel engines and vi) inability of Cetane number in rating the cold startability of diesel engines on different fuels. Possible solutions to the above problems have been examined.

Characteristics of Ion Current Signals in Compression Ignition and Spark Ignition Engines

Ion current sensors have been considered for the feedback electronic control of gasoline and diesel engines and for onboard vehicles powered by both engines, while operating on their conventional cycles or on the HCCI mode. The characteristics of the ion current signal depend on the progression of the combustion process and the properties of the combustion products in each engine. There are large differences in the properties of the combustible mixture, ignition process and combustion in both engines, when they operate on their conventional cycles. In SI engines, the charge is homogeneous with an equivalence ratio close to unity, ignition is initiated by an electric spark and combustion is through a flame propagating from the spark plug into the rest of the charge.

Past experience has shown that the power density of an engine itself is not a sufficient guide to determine whether it will meet the power density needs of the intended combat vehicle application. The real need is for the complete propulsion system to be power dense. Here the definition of the propulsion system includes the engine, transmission, cooling system, air filtration system, intake and exhaust ducting, controls, accessories, batteries, fuel system and final drives. The power pack is a subset of the propulsion system and consists of that part of the propulsion system that would be lifted out of the vehicle for service or replacement and would typically consist of at least the engine, and transmission, cooling system, and power pack controls and ideally would also include the air filtration system and accessory drives. Engine operating characteristics will directly impact power density for some propulsion system items.

Combustion and Emission Formation in the Stirling Engine with Exhaust Gas Recirculation

The combustion and emission formation in continuous combustion burners have been studied both theoretically and experimentally. The theoretical study is concerned with the combustion and emission formation in idealized sprays in quiescent air. The effects of the spray rotation and the air axial and radial velocities have been examined. A model has been developed for the emission formation in an actual Stirling engine. This model showed that the incomplete combustion products are primarily formed in the heterogeneous eddies zone near the burner walls. In this region, surface combustion takes place. The nitric oxide is primarily formed in the premixed-eddies zone where microvolume combustion is believed to take place. The experimental results deal with the effect of diluting the charge by using excess air or exhaust-gas recirculation on performance and emissions. The emissions measured are the nitric oxide, carbon monoxide, unburned hydrocarbons, and carbon.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate combustion and performance characteristics for an advanced class of diesel engines which support future Army ground propulsion requirements of improved thermal efficiency, reduced system size and weight, and enhanced mobility. Advanced ground vehicle engine research represents a critical building block for future Army vehicles. Unique technology driven engines are essential to the development of compact, high-power density ground propulsion systems. Through an in-house analysis of technical opportunities in the vehicle ground propulsion area, a number of dramatic payoffs have been identified as being achievable. These payoffs require significant advances in various areas such as: optimized combustion, heat release phasing, and fluid flow/fuel spray interaction. These areas have been analyzed in a fundamental manner relative to conventional and low heat rejection “adiabatic” engines.

The development of the Stirling engine has recently gained momentum because of technological advances as well as the need to explore alternative power systems for meeting environmental concerns. An overview of the Stirling engine principles, taking into account the ideal as well as the actual cycle, is presented. The analysis examines the various design aspects and the performance and emission characteristics. A comparison is made between the Stirling and other continuous and cyclic combustion engines, such as the gasoline, diesel, gas turbine, and steam engines. This includes recent designs for the Rankine cycle and gas turbine combustors being considered for automotive applications.

This paper describes the development and results of a mathematical model for a single cylinder, naturally-aspirated, direct-injection diesel engine, used to study the effect of compression ratio on the different performance parameters. The parameters investigated include; thermal and mechanical efficiency, ignition delay, mean effective pressure, maximum cylinder pressure, mechanical friction, and blowby. The model simulates a full thermodynamic cycle and considers the intake and exhaust processes, instantaneous heat transfer, instantaneous friction, and instantaneous blowby. Based on the model results, a prediction of an optimum CR for the engine is made.

Correlation between Physical Properties and Autoignition Parameters of Alternate Fuels

The correlations between the physical properties and autoignition parameters of several alternate fuels have been examined. The fuels are DF-2 and its blends with petroleum derived fuels, coal derived fuels, shale derived fuels, high aromatic naphtha sun-flower oils, methanol and ethanol. A total of eighteen existing correlations are discussed. An emphasis is made on the suitability of each of the correlations for the development of electronic controls for diesel engines when run on alternate fuels. A new correlation has been developed between the cetane number of the fuels and its kinematic viscosity and specific gravity.

Cycle-To-Cycle Variation with Low Ignition Quality Fuels in a CFR Diesel Engine

Cycle-to-cycle cylinder pressure variation has been observed in a CFR prechamber diesel engine when low ignition quality (low cetane number) fuels are burned. A statistical analysis of this phenomenon for various fuels and blends with cetane numbers as low as zero has been made. Operating conditions used were those specified by the ASTM Cetane Method for rating diesel fuels, in which the inlet air temperature is 150°F. Additional analysis was made at increased inlet air temperatures of 250°F and 350°F. The cycle-to-cycle variation has been characterized by the variation in the ignition (or pressure rise) delay time. It has been found to increase sharply as fuel cetane number is decreased below 20. The variation in dynamic injection timing was also measured and correlated with that for ignition delay.

Design of High Temperature Engine Components

The successful design of engine components for high temperature applications is very dependent on the use of advanced finite element methods. Without the use of thermal and structural modeling techniques it is virtually impossible to establish the reliable design specifications to meet the application requirements. Advanced modeling and design of two key engine components, the cylinder head thermal insulating headface plate and the capped air gap insulated piston, are presented. Prior engine test experience contributes to further understanding of the important factors in recognizing successful design solutions. It has been found that the modeling results are only as good as the modeling assumptions and that all modeling boundary conditions and constraints must be reviewed carefully.

Determination of the Gas-Pressure Torque of a Multicylinder Engine from Measurements of the Crankshaft's Speed Variation

The local variation of the crankshaft's speed in a multicylinder engine is determined by the resultant gas-pressure torque and the torsional deformation of the crankshaft. Under steady-state operation, the crankshaft's speed has a quasi-periodic variation and its harmonic components may be obtained by a Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT). Based on a lumped-mass model of the shafting, correlations are established between the harmonic components of the speed variation and the corresponding components of the engine torque. These correlations are used to calculate the gas-pressure torque or the indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) from measurements of the crankshaft's speed.

Development of a Zero-Dimensional Heat Release Model for Application to Small Bore Diesel Engines

A zero-dimensional heat release model has been formulated for small bore, automotive-type, direct injection diesel engines and compared with high-speed data acquired from a prototype single-cylinder engine. This comparison included a significant portion of the full-load torque curve and various light-loads with variable speed, injection timing sweeps, and injection pressures. In general, the agreement between the predicted net heat release rate profiles and the experimentally, indirectly-determined profiles was acceptable from a mean cylinder pressure point-of-view while employing a single constant for the turbulent mixing dissipation rate. The proposed model also revealed that moderate swirl rates included in this study had little impact on the gross fuel burning rate profile especially at higher load conditions.

Diesel Cold-Starting Study Using Optically Accessible Engines

An experimental and numerical study was carried out to simulate the diesel spray behavior during cold starting conditions inside two single-cylinder optically accessible engines. One is an AVL single-cylinder research diesel engine converted for optical access; the other is a TACOM/LABECO engine retrofitted with mirror-coupled endoscope access. The first engine is suitable for sophisticated optical diagnostics but is constrained to limited consecutive fuel injections or firings. The second one is located inside a micro-processor controlled cold room; therefore it can be operated under a wide range of practical engine conditions and is ideal for cycle-to-cycle variation study. The intake and blow-by flow rates are carefully measured in order to clearly define the operation condition. In addition to cylinder pressure measurement, the experiment used 16-mm high-speed movie photography to directly visualize the global structures of the sprays and ignition process.
