A Combined Experimental and Numerical Analysis on the Aerodynamics of a Carbon-Ceramic Brake Disc

Abstract Composite ceramic brake discs are made of ceramic material reinforced with carbon fibers and offer exceptional advantages that translate directly into higher vehicle performance. In the case of an electric vehicle, it could increase the range of the vehicle, and in the case of conventional internal combustion engine vehicles, it means lower fuel consumption (and consequently lower CO2 emissions). These discs are typically characterized by complex internal geometries, further complicated by the presence of drilling holes on both friction surfaces. To estimate the aerothermal performance of these discs, and for the thermal management of the vehicle, a reliable model for predicting the air flowing across the disc channels is needed. In this study, a real carbon-ceramic brake disc with drilling holes was investigated in a dedicated test rig simulating the wheel corner flow conditions experimentally using the particle image velocimetry technique and numerically.

A Decentralized Multi-agent Energy Management Strategy Based on a Look-Ahead Reinforcement Learning Approach

Abstract An energy management strategy (EMS) has an essential role in ameliorating the efficiency and lifetime of the powertrain components in a hybrid fuel cell vehicle (HFCV). The EMS of intelligent HFCVs is equipped with advanced data-driven techniques to efficiently distribute the power flow among the power sources, which have heterogeneous energetic characteristics. Decentralized EMSs provide higher modularity (plug and play) and reliability compared to the centralized data-driven strategies. Modularity is the specification that promotes the discovery of new components in a powertrain system without the need for reconfiguration. Hence, this article puts forward a decentralized reinforcement learning (Dec-RL) framework for designing an EMS in a heavy-duty HFCV. The studied powertrain is composed of two parallel fuel cell systems (FCSs) and a battery pack.

A Distributed “Black Box” Audit Trail Design Specification for Connected and Automated Vehicle Data and Software Assurance

Abstract Automotive software is increasingly complex and critical to safe vehicle operation, and related embedded systems must remain up to date to ensure long-term system performance. Update mechanisms and data modification tools introduce opportunities for malicious actors to compromise these cyber-physical systems, and for trusted actors to mistakenly install incompatible software versions. A distributed and stratified “black box” audit trail for automotive software and data provenance is proposed to assure users, service providers, and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) of vehicular software integrity and reliability. The proposed black box architecture is both layered and diffuse, employing distributed hash tables (DHT), a parity system and a public blockchain to provide high resilience, assurance, scalability, and efficiency for automotive and other high-assurance systems.

A Model Study for Prediction of Performance of Automotive Interior Coatings: Effect of Cross-Link Density and Film Thickness on Resistance to Solvents and Chemicals

Abstract Automotive interior coatings for flexible and rigid substrates represent an important segment within automotive coating space. These coatings are used to protect plastic substrates from mechanical and chemical damage, in addition to providing colour and design aesthetics. These coatings are expected to resist aggressive chemicals, fluids, and stains while maintaining their long-term physical appearance and mechanical integrity. Designing such coatings, therefore, poses significant challenges to the formulators in effectively balancing these properties. Among many factors affecting coating properties, the cross-link density (XLD) and solubility parameter (δ) of coatings are the most predominant factors.

A Novel Durability Analysis Approach for High-Pressure Die Cast Aluminum Engine Block

Abstract Lightweight and high-strength high-pressure die casting (HPDC) aluminum has been widely used in automotive components such as the cylinder block, lower crankcase extension, transmission case, and drive unit. Die cast parts have good surface finishes with relatively higher material strength in the casting skin than the center core material, maintain consistent features and tolerance, and maximize metal yield, therefore making it the most cost-effective casting process for mass production of aluminum parts. However, due to the rapid filling rates, the HPDC process tends to form large porosity and oxides because of the entrapped gas and solidification shrinkage, thereby deteriorating the mechanical properties of the casting parts.

A Practical Fail-Operational Steering Concept

Abstract Automated vehicles require some level of subsystem redundancy, whether to allow a transition time for driver re-engagement (L3) or continued operation in a faulted state (L4+). Highly automated vehicle developers need to have safe miles accumulated by vehicles to assess system maturity and experience new environments. This article presents a conceptual framework suggesting that hardware newly available to commercial vehicle application can be used to form a steering system that will remain operational upon a failure. The key points of a provisional safety case are presented, giving hope that a complete safety case is possible. This article will provide autonomous vehicle developers a view of a near term possibility for a highly automated commercial vehicle steering solution.

A Quantitative Analysis of Autonomous Vehicle Cybersecurity as a Component of Trust

Abstract Connected autonomous vehicles that employ internet connectivity are technologically complex, which makes them vulnerable to cyberattacks. Many cybersecurity researchers, white hat hackers, and black hat hackers have discovered numerous exploitable vulnerabilities in connected vehicles. Several studies indicate consumers do not fully trust automated driving systems. This study expanded the technology acceptance model (TAM) to include cybersecurity and level of trust as determinants of technology acceptance. This study surveyed a diverse sample of 209 licensed US drivers over 18 years old. Results indicated that perceived ease of use positively influences perceived usefulness, perceived ease of usefulness negatively influences perceived cyber threats, and perceived cyber threats negatively influence the level of trust.

A Reinforcement Learning Algorithm for Speed Optimization and Optimal Energy Management of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems and Connected Vehicles

Abstract This article describes the application of Reinforcement Learning (RL) with an embedded heuristic algorithm to a multi-objective hybrid vehicle optimization. A multi-objective optimization problem (MOP) is defined as a minimization of total energy consumption and trip time resulting from optimal control of vehicle speed over a known route. First, a computationally efficient heuristic optimization algorithm is formulated to solve the MOP for multiple traffic scenarios. Then, the off-line integration of RL is applied to the heuristic optimization algorithm process and utilized to solve the MOP. Finally, the online optimization capability of the machine learning algorithm is discussed, as well as its extension to the vehicle routing problem and the hybrid electric vehicle. The specific scenario investigated is where a generic vehicle begins a trip on a one-lane highway. The length of the highway and the number of vehicles and traffic signals on the road are generic as well.

A Review of Dynamic State Estimation for the Neighborhood System of Connected Vehicles

Abstract Precise vehicle state and the surrounding traffic information are essential for decision-making and dynamic control of intelligent connected vehicles. Tremendous research efforts have been devoted to developing state estimation techniques. This work investigates the research progress in this field over recent years. To be able to describe the state of multiple traffic elements uniformly, the concept of a vehicle neighborhood system is proposed to describe the system composed of vehicles and their surrounding traffic elements and to distinguish it from the traditional macroscopic traffic research field. In this work, the vehicle neighborhood system consists of three main traffic elements: the host vehicle, the preceding vehicle, and the road. Therefore, a review of state estimation methods for the vehicle neighborhood system is presented around the three traffic objects mentioned earlier.

A Review of Intelligence-Based Vehicles Path Planning

Abstract Numerous researchers are committed to finding solutions to the path planning problem of intelligence-based vehicles. How to select the appropriate algorithm for path planning has always been the topic of scholars. To analyze the advantages of existing path planning algorithms, the intelligence-based vehicle path planning algorithms are classified into conventional path planning methods, intelligent path planning methods, and reinforcement learning (RL) path planning methods. The currently popular RL path planning techniques are classified into two categories: model based and model free, which are more suitable for complex unknown environments. Model-based learning contains a policy iterative method and value iterative method. Model-free learning contains a time-difference algorithm, Q-learning algorithm, state-action-reward-state-action (SARSA) algorithm, and Monte Carlo (MC) algorithm.

A Survey of Intelligent Driving Vehicle Trajectory Tracking Based on Vehicle Dynamics

Abstract Trajectory tracking control, as one of the core technologies of intelligent driving vehicles, determines the driving performance and safety of intelligent driving vehicles and has received extensive attention and research. In recent years, most of the research results of trajectory tracking control are only applicable to conventional working conditions; however, the actual operating conditions of intelligent driving vehicles are complex and variable, so the research of trajectory tracking control algorithm should be extended to the high-speed low-adhesion coefficient, large curvature, variable curvature, and other compound limit working conditions. This requires more consideration of the vehicle dynamics in the controller design.

A Systematic Mapping Study on Security Countermeasures of In-Vehicle Communication Systems

Abstract The innovations of vehicle connectivity have been increasing dramatically to enhance the safety and user experience of driving, while the rising numbers of interfaces to the external world also bring security threats to vehicles. Many security countermeasures have been proposed and discussed to protect the systems and services against attacks. To provide an overview of the current states in this research field, we conducted a systematic mapping study (SMS) on the topic area “security countermeasures of in-vehicle communication systems.” A total of 279 papers are identified based on the defined study identification strategy and criteria. We discussed four research questions (RQs) related to the security countermeasures, validation methods, publication patterns, and research trends and gaps based on the extracted and classified data. Finally, we evaluated the validity threats and the whole mapping process.

Active Safety System for Connected Vehicles

Abstract The development of connected-vehicle technology, which includes vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications, opens the door for unprecedented active safety and driver-enhanced systems. In addition to exchanging basic traffic messages among vehicles for safety applications, a significantly higher level of safety can be achieved when vehicles and designated infrastructure locations share their sensor data. In this article, we propose a new system where cameras installed on multiple vehicles and infrastructure locations share and fuse their visual data and detected objects in real time. The transmission of camera data and/or detected objects (e.g., pedestrians, vehicles, cyclists, etc.) can be accomplished by many communication methods. In particular, such communications can be accomplished using the emerging Dedicated Short-Range Communications (DSRC) technology.

An Investigation on Drilling of Epoxy Composites by Taguchi Method

Abstract Effects of process parameters such as rotational speed, feed rate, and drill diameters on the drilling behavior of basalt-epoxy-based composites including 2.5 wt.% Al2O3 particles manufactured by mixing and compression method were investigated by Taguchi’s technique. The experimental results showed that the burr height (BH) increased considerably almost linearly with an increase in the drill diameter, while it remained stable with speed and decreased the feed rate slightly. There was an excellent correlation between the control factors and responses, BH of basalt fiber-reinforced plastics (BFRPs) through the Taguchi approach. The model had an adjusted R2 value of 96.3%. Generally, the inclusion of Al2O3 particles in BFRP increased its cutting force properties. Optimized drilling conditions for the input variables to produce the lowest response of the BH for composites were rotational speed of 560 rpm and feed rate of 0.28 mm/rev and a drill diameter of 4.5 mm.

Artificial Lightning Tests on Metal and CFRP Automotive Bodies: A Comparative Study

Abstract Carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) has been used in automobiles as well as airplanes. Because of its light weight and high strength, CFRP is a good choice for making vehicle bodies lighter, which would improve fuel economy. Conventional metal bodies provide a convenient body return for electric wiring and offer good shielding against electromagnetic fields. Although CFRP is a conductor, its conductivity is much lower than that of metals. Therefore, CFRP bodies are usually not useful for electric wiring. In thunderstorms, an automotive body is considered to be a Faraday cage that protects the vehicle’s occupants from the potential harms of lightning. Before CFRP becomes widely applied to automotive bodies, its electric and electromagnetic properties need to be investigated in order to determine whether it also works as a Faraday cage against lightning. In this article, CFRP and metal body vehicles were tested under artificial lightning.

Assessing Viscosity in Hydro-Erosive Grinding Process via Refractometry

Abstract The manufacturing of diesel injector nozzles requires precision processing to produce multiple micro-holes. An abrasive fluid containing a mixture of mineral oil and hard particles is used for rounding them, ensuring the hydrodynamics of the injection. As verified in a previous investigation, the viscosity of the fluid undergoes uncontrolled changes during hydro-erosive (HE) grinding. Such undesired viscosity changes are detrimental to the process and difficult to assess. The current investigation aims to study the possibility of using the refractive index of the oils used in the HE grinding for assessing their viscosities. A calibration curve correlating the refractive index and viscosity was obtained from the analysis of samples produced by mixing two distinct mineral oils in different proportions. The determined calibration curve was tested with 45 samples of filtered oil, collected directly from the tanks during the HE grinding.

Assessing the Safety of Environment Perception in Automated Driving Vehicles

Abstract The development of automated driving systems (ADS) necessitates procedures to validate system safety. The reliability of an ADS’s environment perception provided by lidar, radar, and camera sensors is of special interest in this context, because perception errors can be safety-critical. In this article, we formalize the reliability-based validation of environment perception for safe automated driving and discuss associated challenges. We describe a potential solution to a perception reliability validation by deriving performance requirements at the sensor level. We then summarize statistical methods to learn sensor perception reliabilities in field tests, on proving grounds, and through virtual simulations. With the developed safety validation framework, we show that, potentially, one can validate the safety of an ADS with feasible test effort.

Automatic Emergency Collision Avoidance of Straight-Crossing Intelligent Vehicle at a 90-Degree Intersection Based on Vehicle-to-Everything Technology

Abstract In order to reduce collision at a 90-degree intersection, an automatic emergency collision avoidance control method for intelligent vehicles based on vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technology is proposed. Most of the existing automatic emergency braking (AEB) control algorithms are designed for a single high-friction road with reference to the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) evaluation procedures, and they do not consider changes in road friction. Thus, it may be difficult to avoid collision successfully on a low-friction road. Although some studies have considered the variation of road friction, they are only applicable to straight-line rear-end collisions and cannot be directly applied to intersections. In addition, most studies regard the vehicle only as a particle, ignoring the actual dynamic characteristics of the vehicle.

Automotive Components Fatigue and Durability Testing with Flexible Vibration Testing Table

Abstract Accelerated durability testing of automotive components has become a major interest for the ground vehicle Industries. This approach can predict the life characteristics of the vehicle by testing fatigue failure at higher stress level within a shorter period of time. Current tradition of laboratory testing includes a rigid fixture to mount the component with the shaker table. This approach is not accurate for the durability testing of most vehicle components especially for those parts connected directly with the tire and suspension system. In this work, the effects of the elastic support on modal parameters of the tested structure, such as natural frequencies, damping ratios and mode shapes, as well as the estimated structural fatigue life in the durability testing were studied through experimental testing and numerical simulations.

CAN-Bus Remote Monitoring: Standalone CAN Sensor Reading and Automotive Diagnostics

Abstract A vehicle may be a font of data for some applications in safety, maintenance, and entertainment systems, once its electronic control units are connected to each other by a Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. By plugging a compatible device on the vehicle onboard diagnostics interface, reading raw data or conducting automotive diagnostics by International Standardization Organization 15765 and Society of Automotive Engineers J1979 is possible. The usual low-cost CAN data acquisition devices do not allow the connection to a cloud service for remote monitoring. Looking at this issue, this work proposes a low-cost NodeMCU CAN shield for data acquisition which is able to read the CAN frame of a Steering Angle Sensor, in Scenario 1, and standardized information from a vehicle such as its speed, identification number, and engine coolant temperature by automotive diagnostics, in Scenario 2.
