A Reinforcement Learning Algorithm for Speed Optimization and Optimal Energy Management of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems and Connected Vehicles

Abstract This article describes the application of Reinforcement Learning (RL) with an embedded heuristic algorithm to a multi-objective hybrid vehicle optimization. A multi-objective optimization problem (MOP) is defined as a minimization of total energy consumption and trip time resulting from optimal control of vehicle speed over a known route. First, a computationally efficient heuristic optimization algorithm is formulated to solve the MOP for multiple traffic scenarios. Then, the off-line integration of RL is applied to the heuristic optimization algorithm process and utilized to solve the MOP. Finally, the online optimization capability of the machine learning algorithm is discussed, as well as its extension to the vehicle routing problem and the hybrid electric vehicle. The specific scenario investigated is where a generic vehicle begins a trip on a one-lane highway. The length of the highway and the number of vehicles and traffic signals on the road are generic as well.

A Review of Intelligence-Based Vehicles Path Planning

Abstract Numerous researchers are committed to finding solutions to the path planning problem of intelligence-based vehicles. How to select the appropriate algorithm for path planning has always been the topic of scholars. To analyze the advantages of existing path planning algorithms, the intelligence-based vehicle path planning algorithms are classified into conventional path planning methods, intelligent path planning methods, and reinforcement learning (RL) path planning methods. The currently popular RL path planning techniques are classified into two categories: model based and model free, which are more suitable for complex unknown environments. Model-based learning contains a policy iterative method and value iterative method. Model-free learning contains a time-difference algorithm, Q-learning algorithm, state-action-reward-state-action (SARSA) algorithm, and Monte Carlo (MC) algorithm.

Comparing Grade Severity Rating System Models for Trucks Fitted with Drum Brakes versus Disc Brakes

Abstract Excessive brake heating of trucks on downgrades is a cause of continuing concern for the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT). Brake failure on downgrades characteristically takes a catastrophic toll on lives and property. The Grade Severity Rating System (GSRS) developed by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) recommends a maximum safe speed limit that has been identified as a feasible remedy for reducing the incidence of downgrade truck crashes. However, truck characteristics and roadway geometrics have changed over the years following the development of the GSRS. To deal with this development, a research project was initiated by the WYDOT in 2016 to update the GSRS model. The test truck used for the field tests in the prior research project was fitted with disc brakes on the front axle and drum brakes on the rear axle. However, disc brakes represent only about 20% of the brake market.

Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulation of Inter-Vehicle Ventilation Systems: A New Design Approach

Abstract The outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic in the beginning of 2020 has made it necessary to review many practices in countless areas, changing our lifestyles drastically. Humanity has put health issues in priority to deal with the disease effectively. While health systems are having difficult times in terms of patient care, vaccination, and treatment protocols, existing designs in many areas have proven to be inefficient in preventing or decelerating the pandemic. As the disease is transmitted mainly by particle transfer through coughing, sneezing, and even with speaking, wearing face masks and keeping a distance of 2 m as well as hygiene (especially hand) are shown to be effective methods. However, long exposure to indoor air populated with people is still a major risk due to the possibility of high concentration of virus-contaminated air.

Control Performance of Damping and Air Spring of Heavy Truck Air Suspension System with Optimal Fuzzy Control

Abstract The air suspension system of heavy trucks not only improves the vehicle’s ride comfort but also reduces the negative impact on the road surface. In order to evaluate the performance of the control damping (CD) and the control air spring (CAS) of the vehicle air suspension system on the ride comfort and the road friendliness, a three-dimensional (3D) nonlinear dynamic model with 14 degrees of freedom (DOF) of the heavy trucks and optimal fuzzy control (OFC) with control rules optimized by the genetic algorithm (GA) are proposed in this study. The root mean square (RMS) acceleration response of the tractor and the dynamic load coefficient (DLC) at the wheel axles are chosen as objective functions under the various operating conditions. Contrastive analysis of the RMS and DLC values with the passive (P), CD, and CAS methods of the air suspension system is carried out respectively.

Detection Method for Cavity Defects in Ballastless Track Structures of High-Speed Railways Based on Air-Coupled Ultrasonic Lamb Waves

Abstract This study proposes a method for the rapid detection and location of cavity defects in ballastless track structures of high-speed railways in service. First, the propagation law of air-coupled ultrasonic Lamb waves in the ballastless track structure is studied. Theoretical calculation results show that the ultrasonic Lamb wave group velocity of the A2 mode in the track plate is 4000 m/s. Then, the excitation and reception methods of the air-coupled ultrasound are studied. Theoretical and experimental results show that the A2 mode Lamb wave can be generated by the 3.8° oblique incidence of the ballastless track structure. Finally, an experimental system for air-coupled ultrasonic testing is constructed. A pair of air-coupled ultrasonic probes is used to provide excitation and reception Lamb wave signals at an inclined angle of 3.8°, 20 mm away from the surface of the track plate, and 40 mm/step along the scanning direction.

Development of an Overall Vehicle Sizing and Packaging Tool for Autonomous Electric Buses in the Early Concept Phase

Abstract The demand for autonomous electric public transport is increasing globally. The operational requirement of these autonomous vehicles differs widely. Hence, there is an increase in the demand for different vehicle sizes and configurations. This has led to a number of methods and improvements in the vehicle package development process. This article presents the development of a holistic parametric packaging tool for autonomous vehicles called Autonomous Electric Vehicle Tool (AEV tool). The tool is designed with MATLAB, and via a Graphical User Interface (GUI), the user can input parameter data, which directly adjusts a parametric Computer-Aided Design (CAD) model developed with CATIA software. The overall vehicle dimensions, as well as the size of single components, can be changed, and different topology configurations can be chosen.

Efficiency of an AC Conductive In-Road Charging System for Electric Vehicles-Analysis of Pilot Project Data

Abstract This article describes the conductive in-road charging system as developed in the eRoadArlanda project, a pilot project for the development of in-road charging system for both heavy and light vehicles intended for application in motorways. The results of an analysis of measurements collected during the integration tests of this system are presented and discussed. The results focus on the end-to-end efficiency of the in-road charging system and aim to provide researchers in the field with a reference for this technology and configuration for use in the future development of such infrastructure. The analysis of the measurement data addresses losses in the low-voltage side of the AC conductive charging system as well as the vehicle-mounted isolated rectifier/converter connected to the vehicle DC system.

Evaluation of the Injury Risks of Truck Occupants Involved in a Crash as a Result of Errant Truck Platoons

Abstract Truck platooning comprises a number of trucks equipped with automated lateral and longitudinal vehicle control technology, which allows them to move in tight formation with short following distances. This study is an initial step toward developing an understanding of the occupant injury risks associated with the multiple sequential impacts between truck platoons and roadside safety barriers, regardless of whether the crash is associated with a malfunction of automated control or human operation. Full-scale crash impacts of a tractor-trailer platoon into a concrete bridge guardrail were simulated for a specific Test Level condition according to the Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware (MASH) standards. The model of the bridge barrier was developed based on its drawings, and material properties were assigned according to literature data.

Filled Rubber Isolator’s Constitutive Model and Application to Vehicle Multi-Body System Simulation: A Literature Review

Abstract Rubber elements present highly nonlinear mechanical properties affected by frequency and amplitude of excitation, prestrain and temperature, etc. Finite element (FE) models and lumped parameter models can be distinguished in the development of constitutive models of rubbers. Based on the concept of overlay model, different kinds of viscoelastic, or frequency-dependent models, and elastoplastic/friction, or amplitude-dependent models, are compared in terms of their modelling approach, parameters identification process and applications. Prestrain-dependent models and temperature-dependent thermo-mechanical models are also reviewed, including some special models which are not based on the concept of the overlay model. Experimental and computational studies of cylindrical bushings subjected to coupled deformation modes are analyzed and discussed.

Flow Analysis between Two Bluff Bodies in a Close Distance Platooning Configuration

Abstract This article analyses the flow field between two 1/8-scale Generalized European Transport System (GETS) models which are placed in a two-vehicle platoon at close distances. Numerical simulations using the lattice Boltzmann method together with a wind tunnel experiment (open jet facility, OJF) were executed. Next, to balance measurements, coaxial volumetric velocimetry (CVV) measurements were performed to obtain information about the flow field. Three intervehicle distances, 0.10, 0.45 and 0.91 times the vehicle length, were tested for various platoon configurations where the vehicles in the platoon varied in terms of front-edge radius and the addition of tails. At the smallest intervehicle distance, the greatest reductions in drag were found for both the leading and trailing vehicles. The flow in the gap between the two vehicles follows an S-shaped path with small variations between the configurations.

Impact of Dynamic Characteristics of Wheel-Rail Coupling on Rail Corrugation

Abstract To gain a better understanding of the characteristics of corrugation, including the development and propagation of corrugation, and impact of vehicle and track dynamics, a computational model was established, taking into account the nonlinearity of vehicle-track coupling. The model assumes a fixed train speed of 300 km/h and accounts for vertical interaction force components and rail wear effect. Site measurements were used to validate the numerical model. Computational results show that (1) Wheel polygonalisation corresponding to excitation frequency of 545-572 Hz was mainly attributed to track irregularity and uneven stiffness of under-rail supports, which in turn leads to vibration modes of the bogie and axle system in the frequency range of 500-600 Hz, aggregating wheel wear. (2) The peak response frequency of rail of the non-ballasted track coincides with the excitation frequency of wheel-rail coupling; the resonance results in larger wear amplitude of the rail.

Influence of Yaw and Lateral Offset on the Aerodynamics of a Two-Truck Platoon

Abstract Governmental regulations and customer demand for more energy-efficient vehicles are driving the development of new solutions in the automotive sector. One way of improving energy efficiency is by reducing the aerodynamic drag. A possible solution to achieve this is the concept of vehicles driving in close proximity, which is now becoming feasible considering the advances in vehicle automation and communication. This study focuses on the behavior of aerodynamic forces and flow effects in a two-truck platoon when more realistic road conditions, such as lateral offset and yaw, are present. The study is primarily numerical, but the results are validated against an experimental campaign conducted earlier by the authors. The main findings are that the drag of the leading truck is mostly governed by the base pressure of its trailer and that the truck sees only minor changes when a lateral offset is added, except at very short intervehicle distances.

Numerical Analysis of Wind-Break Fences for Truck Stability in Crosswind

Abstract Several accidents on the highways are due to strong crosswind conditions. The effectiveness of wind-break fences on a sudden strong crosswind has been investigated for a generic truck model. Two wind-break fences have been designed for stretching the rise time of aerodynamic loads. The dynamic response of the vehicle to crosswind while exiting a tunnel is simulated. Moving mesh CFD simulations and vehicle dynamics simulations are used to assess the effectiveness of the fences based on a safety index and the maximum lateral displacement of the vehicle. The proposed fences mitigate sudden aerodynamic loads and avoid the rollover of the vehicle.

Optimizing Hydrogen Fueling Infrastructure Plans on Freight Corridors for Heavy-Duty Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles

Abstract The development of a future hydrogen energy economy will require the development of several hydrogen market and industry segments including a hydrogen-based commercial freight transportation ecosystem. For a sustainable freight transportation ecosystem, the supporting fueling infrastructure and the associated vehicle powertrains making use of hydrogen fuel will need to be co-established. This article introduces the OR-AGENT (Optimal Regional Architecture Generation for Electrified National Transportation) tool developed at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, which has been used to optimize the hydrogen refueling infrastructure requirements on the I-75 corridor for heavy-duty (HD) fuel cell electric commercial vehicles (FCEV).

Railway Fastener Positioning Method Based on Improved Census Transform

Abstract In view of the fact that the current positioning methods of railway fasteners are easily affected by illumination intensity, bright spots, and shadows, a positioning method with relative grayscale invariance is proposed. The median filter is used to remove the noise in order to reduce the adverse effects on the subsequent processing results, and the baffle seat edge features are enhanced by improved Census transform. The mean-shift clustering algorithm is used to classify the edges to weaken the interference by short lines. Finally, the Hough transform is used to quickly extract the linear feature of the baffle seat edge and achieve the exact position of the fastener with the prior knowledge. Experimental results show that the proposed method can accurately locate and have good adaptability under different illumination conditions, and the position accuracy is increased by 4.3% and 8%, respectively, in sunny and rainy days.

Research on Control Target of Truck Platoon Based on Maximizing Fuel Saving Rate

Abstract In view of the traditional constant spacing policy (CSP) can’t maximize the fuel saving rate of the truck platoon when choosing the smaller desired vehicle spacing as the control target, a new control strategy is proposed in this article. This strategy dramatically reduces the fuel consumption of the truck platoon from the start to the formation of a stable platoon, thus greatly increasing the fuel saving rate of the platoon. To prove the effectiveness of the strategy, this article carried out the longitudinal dynamics modeling of the truck and the modeling of the fuel consumption model of engine first. Longitudinal dynamics modeling establishes the dynamic equations for truck braking and nonbraking. The fuel consumption model of engine is built using a three-dimensional map. Second, the design of the controller is described. The controller calculates the desired acceleration of the following vehicle based on the speed error and the following distance error.

Research on the Evaluation System of Urban Rail Transit Operation Safety in the Context of Intelligent Transportation

Abstract With the rapid development of the Internet and intelligent control technology, intelligent transportation has become a research hotspot in building a smart city. Under the background of intelligent transportation, it is particularly important to effectively evaluate the rail transit as the framework of urban public transport in this study, and fuzzy mechanism is introduced to optimize the support vector machine (SVM), and on this basis, analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and SVM are combined to improve the classification accuracy and improve the rail transit operation safety evaluation index system. The experimental results show that the classification accuracy of the fuzzy SVM combined with AHP is above 85% on all the datasets, and it can effectively eliminate the less-relevant indicators. In the actual evaluation of Shanghai Rail Transit safety, the prediction accuracy exceeded 80% and the highest reached 94.51%.

Ride Analysis of Road Surface-Three-Wheeled Vehicle-Human Subject Interactions Subjected to Random Excitation

Abstract The vibration transmissibility and ride comfort for the human body elements are the important evaluation parameters while traveling in a passenger’s vehicle because both directly influence the occupant’s health and effectiveness of working. These parameters also examine the sensitivity of the human body to vehicle vibrations, which is an important area of research and investigations these days. The present work analyzes the effects of road disturbances on the vehicle and human biodynamic subject vibrations. A nine degrees of freedom (9 DoF) three-wheeled coupled vertical-lateral vehicle dynamic model and eleven degrees of freedom (11 DoF) biodynamic model are formulated and integrated. The vibration transmissibility and ride comfort based on the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and ISO 2631 standards are investigated for the different segments of a human subject in a seated posture.

Safety Spacing Control of Truck Platoon Based on Emergency Braking under Different Road Conditions

Abstract Vehicle platooning reduces fuel consumption, improves traffic throughput, and achieves smaller intervehicle spacing which increases the probability of danger during platoon braking. This article presents a sliding mode control based on the safety spacing policy for longitudinal control of a connected truck platoon with a focus on the predecessor following interactions. In particular, the modified safety spacing policy considering the intervehicle braking information communication delay, the sluggish nature of the brake actuator, the road conditions on each vehicle as well as the vehicle motion state is proposed. On this basis, an acceleration sliding mode controller is proposed, which takes into consideration the spacing error and speed error of the intervehicle, and the control error is zero, so as to obtain the expected acceleration of each vehicle in the platoon.
